**The Annual Vestry Report** focusses on the work in our Ministry Area of Bro Gwydyr within the three elements of our Diocesan vision and charitable objectives:
## **Worshipping God. Growing the Church. Loving the World.**
It is always the privilege of the clergy to be present for and to help families through the significant events in the lives of the people of a parish. None so poignant as the funerals of those with whom we have lived and worshipped, argued, struggled, and also shared a drink and a laugh. This past year we have celebrated the lives of many very dear folk to us. But it is not the end of life I would like to focus on but new beginnings. For this, I have partly to pay tribute to the due diligence and attention to detail of the Faculty office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. I, and the couple who were married by 'Emergency Special License', (a very rare thing indeed) were extremely grateful for their help in ensuring the ceremony could go ahead in such a timely manner. The beginning of life, and in particular a life together is not normally so swiftly organised nor urgently undertaken. As we begin a new five year mission plan looking forward to all that this year might bring I am reminded of those marriage vows: To have and to hold, From this day forward, For better for worse, For richer for poorer, In sickness and in health, To love and to cherish, As long as we both shall live, According to the will and purpose of God, And to this I give you my pledge. They feel appropriate, not just for a couple who are intending to marry, but for the

church as a whole. There are some significant challenges - ahead for us not least the increasing financial cost of maintaining our structures and the diminishing grant funding. But also the commitment to and discipleship in God, which following our baptismal promise, is a commitment to live in communion with God. The marriage promises seem to be most appropriate for such a life of devotion. (Some orders of women are still referred to as 'brides of Christ'.) Not everyone is able, nor inclined, to live as in a monastic setting, yet there - is something important about the shared religious life literally a life in connection to each other and to God. As Richard Rohr writes: 'Whatever re-connects (Re-Ligio) our parts to the whole is an experience of God'. So as we go into this new pattern of mission, I'm looking forward hopefully to all that might enable that reconnection, the reaffirmation of old promises or the making of new promises which echo the timeless. Some of these may be very familiar to us and some of them may be new. So long as we remember it is: 'according to the will and purpose of God', whose ways are often cloaked in mystery and can only be seen, as St. Paul has it, 'Through a glass darkly'. As we begin to faithfully step out for this new chapter in the life of our Ministry Area, can I express my gratitude to you all for being on the journey, fellow pilgrims on the road.

_**Not only do we Worship God** in our services, but through our whole lives. When we gather for worship we are preparing to go out into the world._
We continued our regular pattern of worship across the Ministry Area. Morning Prayer is held weekdays Monday (online) Tuesday (Dolgarrog) Wednesday (Penmachno). Most churches hold Sunday services every other week. Occasional alternative services have also been possible including a popular Evensong in Dolwyddelan and Celtic Services in Llanrhychwyn.
Our churches continue to be a place of welcome for significant events and we paid tribute to those who had died this past year. In September we bid sad farewell to our dear friend Ken. In Dolwyddelan we were honoured to mark the death of David Taylor with a 1662 funeral. David, a former organist donated the current organ in Dolwyddelan. St. Gwyddelan’s Day was marked by a service followed by a shared meal in church.
The now Venerable David Parry and no less venerable Rev'd Eryl Parry move into Trefriw. Eryl is licensed as Pioneer Enabler between Bro Gwydyr and Bro Celynnin. The Archdeacon's first visitation took place in St. Mary's Betws-yCoed at which the massed choirs of St Mary’s Conwy and Bro

Gwydyr sang led by Chris Roberts. After the service we were treated to Gareth's excellent canapés and Prosecco.
Keith our Reader, who was licensed as a Lay Licensed Ministry Officer by the Archbishop of Wales in Bangor Cathedral in November, and Sue our Worship Leader continue to lead worship. In Penmachno every fifth Sunday has been given over to Family Worship. These dates provide an opportunity for a more free-form style of worship, which aims to complement the fortnightly Eucharist services. The year culminated with his “Carols, Crackers & Bacon Barms” service on New Year’s Eve.
In Trefriw the annual 'Carol Service and lighting the tree' was added to by a large nativity scene set outside the church.
In Dolgarrog the church has been used for worship and as a community space, hosting displays of art and historical images.
Christmas was celebrated in style this year across the Ministry Area In Penmachno a Morning Eucharist followed hot on the heels of The Big Sing. This was a wonderful community carol service, led by Eryl, on the evening of Christmas Eve. A large number of musicians contributed to this memorable event. Many people came to enjoy mince pies and singing! In Betwsy-Coed there was a community lantern parade, held in pouring rain, followed by a Carol Service during which Côr Penmachno sang after which Côr Rŵst entertained us. December finished in Betws-y-Coed with Christmas Eve Mass and Christmas Day Eucharist with a double Baptism.

**Growing the church** _through deepening our faith, commitment and understanding, taking it beyond purely increasing attendance._
Warm Spaces, which ran for the first three months of 2023, were able to be offered in three locations. Penmachno provided tea, coffee and biscuits; games; a quiet corner for reading; soup and bread; and (of course!) a very warm welcome! The Gwydyr in Dolwyddelan provided a soup lunch. This was also able to be provided in Betws-y-Coed in the Church Hall. In Penmachno this was the catalyst for a return of the weekly Coffee Morning, which opens up the Church building to the community.
In Dolwyddelan the Church is open for private prayer/visitors every weekend and open daily from Easter to the end of the year and has continued this year to be a venue for a visiting retreat group seeking a quiet space for reflection and worship.
Penmachno Church has twice been used as a filming location. This brings visitors and good publicity to the village, and shows off our beautiful church building to the wider world. One was an Indian television production, and the other was a feature

about the Cerrig Penmachno for a Welsh medium magazine programme.
In Betws-y-Coed we returned to holding Ceilidhs which attracted a large number through the year. The first celebrating Burns Night, the last in tribute to Ken! The summer choir concerts began again and achieved pre covid success.
In Penmachno the school visited us twice this year. They visited in January to learn about the history of the church, and again in March to hear the Easter story told by Gwen through Godly Play. Creativity continued in Penmachno for Easter as Keith created the Easter Garden in church. This illustrated the empty tomb and placed it in the context of the Machno valley.
• Open Doors was supported once again in September at Penmachno and in Dolgarrog where an art exhibition displayed a history through the images of the people of Dolgarrog. All our church buildings remained open for visitors to come and enjoy. In Penmachno we welcomed ACE Cultural Tours for their annual visit in June.
This year there were two Posadas during Advent. Our famous hand-knitted Mary, Joseph and Donkey stayed one night in a different house until arriving at church on Christmas morning. Each house was offered a free book which told the Nativity story in an up-to-date way in either Welsh or English, and we just asked them to put the Posada in their front window so people could see where it was.

**In loving the world** _we are fulfilling the commandment of Christ to ‘Love one another’. Not just those in our communities, but all including the earth itself._
In January and February we continued to teach English to the asylum seekers who were housed in the Hilton hotel Dolgarrog. They were moved on early in February to locations across Wales. We continue to receive donations for the Blaenau Food Bank in Dolwyddelan (Spar) Penmachno (Church) Betws-yCoed (Church) and in Trefriw and Dolgarrog for the Conwy Bags of Love.
We ran a number of special events, aimed at fundraising while bringing the community together. At Penmachno an Easter Fair in April, a Family Picnic at Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant in May, and a Family Beetle Drive in October.
In Dolgarrog Caru Dolgarrog assisted by the Hilton Hotel put on afternoon tea for the eldest members in the village. Also through the Gŵyl Garrog Festival in September, people were invited to fill in questionnaires on what they thought Dolgarrog needed and what they loved about the village. An application to the Levelling Up fund was completed by Bro Gwydyr.

Gŵyl Garrog was attended by over 600 people mostly from the village and valley. Drama on the Legend of the dragon – workshops held in the church and acted by the young people took place. Stalls, Music through the day. And events for the children took place. Archbishop Andrew opened the festival and he came back to see the art exhibition in the church and to hear from Jackie Ley. The church now has a composting toilet facilitated by grants for these events.
Penmachno hosted a Plant Sale in June, which was very popular. Over £200 was raised for MIND.
In September Penmachno church hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning. This follows the successful Macmillan Coffee Morning last year, and once again raised nearly £600 for the charity. This year we included a cake sale run by one of our young people, and enjoyed live music played by Geraldine and Alan.
Christmas Fairs were held in Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed. A great success once again. In Betws-y-Coed Santa arrived with Pero as his helper. In Penmachno over £250 was raised and £85 donated to Young Carers.
• Penmachno now hosts Community WiFi! This enables us to accept donations by card. The Church building now houses a donation box for the Blaenau Food Bank and a box of Covid Tests for anyone who requires them.

Our new Mission Plan has been accepted by the Ministry Area Council.
## **For the next five years, our Local Church goals will be:**
Encourage each other to gather for prayer and discipleship as the basis for all we do.
Caring for people, offering opportunities to promote healing and nurturing, and helping to develop and sustain supportive networks in our communities.
Making our worship services as accessible to all as is possible, and offering a pattern of ‘gatherings’ with a wide appeal.
Engaging with and communicating what we are doing, to our local communities in ways that are accessible to all.
Promoting low-carbon, sustainable lifestyles, and aiming for Gold ECO award for all our churches
Continuing with ongoing building maintenance as per our EZRA reports. Both keeping the buildings safe for the future and open where possible, in collaboration with local communities.

Raising funds through small and large fundraising / grant funded opportunities to do things we must do, and things we want to do.
## **To meet these goals, individual churches will:**
Ensure that there are opportunities locally for communal prayer and discipleship. Commit to a regular corporate prayer practise and offer discipleship opportunities.
Hold congregational meetings to create and review their local version of the plan based on the goals above. The plan can grow and evolve through a process of trial and error, year on year.
Engage with local communities, or use recent local community plans that have included community consultation, to understand local activities, needs and preferences. Use this information to determine which of the goals above are a priority and what actions, would help best meet local needs. Then act and build local community engagement and participation.
Publicise information about the Church so that it reaches the local communities. This would include regular updates on church notice boards.
Provide two brief updates a year to the MAC on activities undertaken and progress towards goals identified in each local community.

## _Cenhadaeth_ _**Adeiladau** Cyllid Mission_ _**Buildings** Finance_
Ongoing work to our buildings has been slow in 2023, however, with the appointment of Diocesan property advisor Paul Skeet, work has begun at Penmachno to repair the roof and rainwater goods. Schemes have been prepared to investigate and repair the damp in St. Mary's Betws-y-Coed. Work to the roof in Llanrhychwyn is expected to be completed early in 2024. The bell at Llanrhychwyn was returned after being restored and now sounds much clearer. The redundant building behind the church in Dolgarrog has been earmarked for demolition which will create part of the space for the new garden. A small garden area was planted by Pam in Penmachno and a plan for a patio area with pots in being prepared. Dolwyddelan Church submitted their application for a Silver Eco-Church award and - were successful Congratulations! As part of this, In June a survey was carried out to record plants/trees in the churchyard. Faculty advice has been received for a new stained glass window to replace the wired frosted glass window in Llanrhychwyn Church. This work will be entirely funded by a legacy. A faculty application has been submitted for work to the tower in Betws-y-Coed to receive a ring of bells following a survey to ensure the tower was capable of holding them.
