**Objectives and Achievements**

Our Charity aim is ‘to befriend mainly ‘lifer’ prisoners in HMP Leyhill, South Gloucester or other prisons if requested, building up a relationship of trust until they are released when we will mentor them until they can stand on their own two feet so that they NEVER RE-OFFEND AGAIN’.

Re-offending costs the tax payer over £10 billion a year as 60% of ex-offenders re-offend within 2 years of release. New Beginnings 4U Trustees ask WHY? The outside world just seem to treat ex-offenders as ‘problems’ but NB4U treat them as ‘human beings who deserve a second chance’. As a Christian Charity we read in the Bible on 3 occasions ‘the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor, He has sent me to comfort the broken hearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed’ Jesus felt these words in the Old testament of the Bible SO important, that he preached on them in his first sermon.

NB4U has been in operation for 19 years and a Charity for 7 years. Our routine remains the same, visiting Leyhill Prison on Saturday and Sunday on the first weekend of each month. Other Prisons visited in 2025 have been Channing’s Wood,, Parc, Bridgend, Ashfield Bristol, Whatton and Erlestoke and Patricia did visit a prisoner in Frankland, Durham as she was on holiday there with her daughter and son-in –law.. These clients really appreciate our twice yearly visits of encouragement. We continued to send them all Birthday & Christmas Gifts of £50. We also buy them treats on their ROTL day’s and Home Leaves. In 2025 we have seen a further 3 of our clients released into AP Hostels and all 3 are doing well. One lad was unfortunately re-called because ongoing accommodation couldn’t be found for him, so that renders him ‘homeless’ we all find that really sad

We still like to think that we are here to build their trust, listen to their worries and concerns especially of deferred action. We never condemn or criticise them but offer them hope and a chance to turn their life around. We like the words of Henry Ford who said ‘Failure is simply the opportunity to begin life again more intelligently’ These residents need people around them who are interested in them as human beings, who have served their sentence and now deserve a second chance.

NB4U volunteers meet them on the Release on Temporary Licence days, and help them fulfil tasks like accompanying them to their Probation Officer appointment, opening a Bank Account, buying a mobile phone, finding a Doctor and Dentist. Visiting the library for them to be able to use the Computers and then anything else that helps them settle into the outside world. We have noticed this year they have more mental health issues, mostly financial anxiety so we always do a food shop with them. One of our Trustees has written an excellent guide on ways to help them settle into their Community.

Since we started the work in 2008 we have helped 85 men. We give hope to around 18 guys either still in prison or recently released and in Hostels and Flats. Many of the others seek our advice when they require it.

It has been a hard year for our Founders, Patricia & Peter Hilder as Peter was diagnosed with Grade 3 Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in July 2024 after being treated for 2 Skin Cancer Legions in the January. He had 6 rounds of Chemotherapy from July to November 2024 and had a good Christmas period with his family. However in January 2025 the symptoms returned and although a further round of Chemotherapy seemed the way forward his body had different ideas and he passed away peacefully on February 9[th] 2025. He is missed dreadfully but when 220 attended his celebration service the work of both Patricia and Peter was acknowledged as second to none and a round of applause showed peoples appreciation of their work. Ten of their lads attended the service, some taking part.

So what about the future?

## **Future Plans**

Patricia plans to continue the work as follows:-

Visiting 2 lads in HMP Leyhill and 6 in other Prisons. 12 released but still needing encouragement. We will write regularly to 8 others.

There doesn’t appear to be any way forward to continue the Charity long term as Patricia is now 79 and hopes to retire at the end of 2027 thus thinking it may be a Charity for a 20 year season.

The Community Lottery Grant received in 2024 had been a tremendous help meaning Patricia hasn’t had to spend hours cooking to raise funds. She has just concentrated on visiting the men and loving and encouraging them to lead healthy and positive lives

By order of the Trustees
