Objectives and Achievements
Our Charity aim is ‘to befriend mainly ‘lifer’ prisoners in HMP Leyhill, South Gloucester or other prisons if requested, building up a relationship of trust until they are released when we will mentor them until they can stand on their own two feet so that they NEVER RE-OFFEND AGAIN’.
Re-offending costs the tax payer over £10 billion a year as 60% of ex-offenders re-offend within 2 years of release. New Beginnings 4U Trustees ask WHY? The outside world just seem to treat exoffenders as ‘problems’ but NB4U treat them as ‘human beings who deserve a second chance’. As a Christian Charity we read in the Bible on 3 occasions ‘the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor, He has sent me to comfort the broken hearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed’ Jesus felt these words in the Old testament of the Bible SO important, that he preached on them in his first sermon.
NB4U has been in operation for 13 years and gradually as Covid restrictions started to ease through 2021 we began to get back into our usual routine visiting our residents in HMP Leyhill on a monthly basis and when lock-down was lifted going to North & East England, then South England and Wales. All our clients really appreciate our twice yearly visits of encouragement. We continued to send them Birthday & Christmas Gifts of £30 and buy them treats on their ROTL day’s and Home Leaves which recommenced during the last 3 months of 2021 and have built up again gradually during 2022
We still like to think that we are here to build their trust, listen to their worries and concerns especially of deferred action. We never condemn or criticise them but offer them hope and a chance to turn their life around. We like the words of Henry Ford who said ‘Failure is simply the opportunity to begin life again more intelligently’ These residents need people around them interested in them as human beings, who have served their sentence and now deserve a second chance.
NB4U volunteers meet them on the Release on Temporary Licence days, and help them fulfil tasks like accompanying them to their Probation Officer appointment, opening a bank Account, buying a mobile phone, finding a Doctor and Dentist. Visiting the library for them to use the Computers and then anything else that helps them settle into the outside world.
During 2022 the owner of our supportive house needed to sell the property but it served 2 lads very well in the 3 years we had it.
We appreciate the contact we still have via Zoom with the South West Mentoring Alliance in Exeter. It is good when you are a small organisation to have support and advice from larger organisations.
Since we started the work in 2009 we have helped 76 men. We give hope to around 26 guys either still in prison or recently released and in Hostels and Flats. Many of the others seek our advice when they require it. So what about the future?
Future Plans
Over the next year we plan to:-
Continue visiting 6 lads in HMP Leyhill and 6 in other Prisons. We will write regularly to 10 others.
Continue to see if there is a way forward for the Charity as the Founders are now both 76 years old
Strive to increase our financial support from local Churches and donors so that Mr & Mrs Hilder don’t have to work so hard raising around £5,000 through their own efforts
Continue to explore donations from Trusts and Companies.
By order of the Trustees
