Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01/04/2023 To 31/03/2024

Charity name: Hope City Furniture

Charity registration number: 1181097

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 Hope City Furniture has four purposes:
advancement of the Christian faith;
relieving financial hardship by providing
furniture and household items to those
rehoused due to crisis who could not
otherwise afford them; protecting and
preserving the environment through
promoting the reuse and recycling of
furniture and household items; and
promoting social inclusion.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Hope City Furniture works in
partnership with many different
agencies and organisations in Derby
who refer people to us who have been
rehoused due to crisis for the provision
of free good quality furniture and
household items. During the reporting
period we received around 175 referrals
and gave away over 750 items of
furniture. Those referred to us included
refugees (in particular many Ukrainians
who were moving on from host
families), women and families fleeing
domestic violence, the homeless,
victims of human trafficking, those
moving on from supported
accommodation and those recovered
from substance abuse. On every
referral we explain that we are
Christians and offer to pray for the
person and also offer them a Bible
and/or tracts in their language if they
would like one. However, there is no
obligation to receive either, and neither
are a condition of receiving our services
as we provide furniture to people of all
faiths and no faith. All the furniture we
give away has been donated to us thus
we actively promote the upcycling and
recycling of what would otherwise
potentially be landfill furniture, in order
to reduce the impact on the environment
of such unnecessary wastage. We also
sell some antique and vintage furniture
to provide an income stream for the
charity in order to make it as self-
sustainable as possible. This furniture
is primarily sold on Facebook
Marketplace for upcycling and is mostly
furniture that we have been donated but
is not suitable to give away. The selling
of this furniture again relates to the
purpose of protecting and preserving
the environment through promoting the
reuse and recycling of second-hand
furniture. Most of the people referred to
us have experienced trauma due to the
different crises they have been through,
and most are lonely and isolated. In
order to promote social inclusion, we
often revisit those referred to us if there
is an open door to do so for social
interaction. We also try to connect
people to other organisations and
projects in Derby for ongoing support
and especially connect people into
churches around Derby where this is
appropriate.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 When planning activities for the year,
the trustees have considered the
Commission’s guidance on public
benefit.

Contribution made by

Para 1.38 Hope City Furniture is hugely grateful
and acknowledges the essential
contribution made by volunteers in
running the charity over the past year –
especially Richard Fraser, Fiona Fraser,
Phil Batten, and Andrew Vaughan. We
are also grateful for those who support
us in ancillary roles – Elaine Nanson
who makes us New Home cards and

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 During the period of this report Hope
City Furniture has processed around
175 referrals and has given away over
750 items of furniture to people who
have been rehoused due to crisis and
who have found themselves in the
position of having to completely furnish
a new home without the means to do so.
This provision has greatly benefitted
those who have received it. We have
also given out over 100 New
Testaments and Bibles, and well over
100 tracts in around 10 different
languages and have prayed with almost
everyone we have delivered furniture to.
Many times, people have been touched
by the presence of God as we have
prayed for them. We have sold around
100 items of second-hand furniture
primarily for upcycling. This, together
with the furniture given away totals over
850 items of furniture and household
items reused and recycled which has
undoubtedly reduced unnecessary
landfill and wastage.

Financial Review

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The opening balance at 01/04/2023 was
£14,788.74 of which £150.28 was
restricted to literature purchase.
Total receipts for the period of this
report were £15,690.44 of which £2,500
was restricted funding received from
WEC International for renovating and
equipping the furniture restoration
workshop. Unrestricted income came
primarily from sales of donated goods
and unrestricted donations. We also
received a grant of £2,500 from
Foundation Derbyshire.
Expenditure for the period was
£13,721.50, of which £150.28 was
restricted. Unrestricted expenditure
consisted primarily of the costs of
charitable activities. Restricted
expenditure was for literature.
The net result for the year was an
excess of receipts over expenses giving
a total profit of £1,968.94 and a closing
balance of £16,757.68 of which £2,500
was restricted for the furniture
restoration workshop.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 Hope City Furniture has a reserves
policy which states the charity aims to
always have three months
(approximately £3,500) of operating
costs in the bank account. Should the
amount in the bank account fall below
this figure, then measures will be taken
to limit expenditure. Every effort will
then be made to rebuild three months of
operating costs as quickly as possible.
Reserves are held in order to cover the
following:
1. Contingency: unexpected expenditure
in the event of an emergency;
2. Cash-flow: situations where a bill has
to be paid before the money to cover it
has been received;
3. Commitment: a commitment to
expenditure which cannot be covered by
the annual income;
4. Closure: the charity becomes
financially unsustainable and has to be
wound up.
As of the 31st March 2024 Hope City
Furniture’s closing balance was
£16,757.68 of which £2,500 was
restricted.
