Brid8north Baptist Church 2025 Report ## Church Life ## Leadership - George Hirsch During 2025-2026 I have served in leadership with Mark Gibbons, Kimberley Ray, Rosemary Anderson and Andy James in support of Steve and Rachel, in their first, busy full year with us at BBC. As trustees, we have met twice per month; once to discuss church business and once socially, to get to know each other better. ## Introduction - Steve Thomson As we look back over the past year, we do so with grateful hearts. It has been a year of highs and lows, of ordinary moments and significant ones—but through it all, one thing is clear: God has been with us. Scripture reminds us, “The Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). That has been our story this year. In every step, every conversation, every act of service—seen and unseen—God has been present. This year, we have known both joy and sorrow. We have said goodbye to Jan Davies, a dearly loved member of our church family. We remember her with deep affection and give thanks for her life, her faith, and the impact she had among us. And we have also celebrated new life in Christ, rejoicing as six people were baptised—powerful reminders that God is still at work, drawing people to himself and changing lives. In the joy and in the challenge, in what was obvious and what was hidden, God has been at work among us. We have not walked this year alone. God has been with us. We started our term as leaders with a successful away day at Chorley Chapel, giving us some space and quiet to seek God’s will and direction and are looking forward to repeating this this summer. We share a passion to make ours a community that reflects God’s love, both towards each other and outwards into our community and beyond. We hope this has been reflected in our summer of events and the increasingly successful Ladies’ Brunch and Men’s Supper events. We recognise that there is work to do to make our church building a more attractive place to worship, both for our existing church family and for new members and have discussed with you what this might look like and what we might need to invest to do it. While we advance these plans, we hope that changes in our children’s area and offering, Steve’s gifts in teaching and storytelling will appeal to you and to people who might visit our church to see if it might be the right place for them. We have continued and built on links with the other churches in the town for many events; few will forget Steve and Suzanne’s viral publicity for Together at Christmas this year. Many of us have enjoyed and benefited from the book club based on ‘The relentless elimination of hurry’, and the successful alpha course. We are also proud to host the growing groups for our young people within BBC. We are grateful that so many of you have answered the call to share in the various rota’s that support our Sunday worship and hope that you are also feeling blessed in contributing taking to the life of your church. **----- Start of picture text -----**

## Safeguarding – Mark Gibbons I am the church’s Designated Person for Safeguarding (DPS) and George Hirsch is the Deputy DPS and we are supported in terms of administration work by Corinne James. Between us we keep a record of safeguarding concerns if they come up as well as a record of any actions taken. My role (with help from George and Corinne) includes: It is important to emphasise that it is the collective duty of us all to raise any concerns regarding hazards relating to the building, with particular regards to the wellbeing of those who attend our premises, and these should initially be discussed with Andy, who will notify the wider leadership team and any other relevant parties as and when necessary. Thank you for being a valuable member of our church family - let’s continue to care and look out for each other! � Overseeing our safeguarding policy and ensuring it is reviewed annually and approved by members � Promoting good safeguarding practice across the church � Responding to any safeguarding concerns/reports raised that are to do with our church people and our work � Liaising with other organisations to do with safeguarding - Maintaining a record of volunteers and staff who have completed safeguarding training � Ensuring all staff and volunteers have a completed DBS at the appropriate level ## Buildings – Mark Gibbons At the leadership team’s away day in June, I notionally said I would be a point of contact and coordination for buildings. In reality, Corinne deals with most day-today issues and I did not have any significant decisions to make in 2025. I recognise the helpful contributions made by several church members to maintain the building and site, and would aim to formalise a team of people who review buildings-related issues in 2026, as well as praying and working towards an refurbishment of our main room, including new PA and AV systems (and the possible removal of the organ). - Ensuring our documentation is appropriate and up-to-date All trustees are due to complete Level 2 and 3 training in January 2026. All those attending the church service on 14/9/25 completed Level 1 training. All training provided by Baptists Together. ## Health and Safety – Andy James Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 occupiers of places of worship such as ours must manage risks to employees and the public. This includes mandatory assessment of risks related to building maintenance, volunteers, public events, and activities within BBC. Alongside the general health and safety monitoring throughout 2025 risk assessments were also carried out for external events including the Pentecost Praise in the Park which took place in June and also for Carols in the Park in December which, unfortunately, due to poor weather conditions was cancelled. **----- Start of picture text -----**

## Finance – Kimberley Ray Following the purchase of the Manse and the appointment of our minister, Steve, towards the end of 2024, 2025 was the first year to incorporate the full costs. Linda had forecast that we would break even. We did finish the year with a very slight surplus. We continue to support Alex’ salary at Kings Kids, Nigeria. Nicky Brand retired from Kings Kids during the year. We also continue to support Bridgnorth Youth and Schools Project and Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre. Specific gifts towards King’s Kids winter grain, Farmer Ian’s visit, 2 other KK’s workers and for Tearfund were made. In 2026 our focus will be on making improvements to our church building to make it more attractive and welcoming to new people and to update our sound and visual systems. We will need to raise money to do this work. Please pray and look at your own finances to see if you are able to increase your contribution to the church to help us get this work done or to come up with fundraising ideas. ## Children and Young People, Families, Young Adults – Mark Gibbons ## **Young Adults** It seems inappropriate to put my name next to Young Adults, in more ways than one. The truth is that Cameron Ray pioneered a Faith Under 30 group in 2025, with great success. Usually meeting weekly, the group often had 6-12 people attending and some of those people came to faith or reignited their faith. ## **Children and Young People** Sunday morning sessions for primary-school-age children started again in January 2025 and our partnership with Bridgnorth Youth and Schools Project continued, running Sunday evening sessions for secondary-school-age young people. ## **Sunday Mornings– (primary-school-aged children)** I run 45 minute sessions using resources from The Sunday School Store. The number of children attending a typical session varies from 3 to 6, and the span of ages is quite significant too (the youngest can be 2 years-old if accompanied by a parent and the oldest might be 13). It suits me to plan the key teaching message, always based on a Bible passage/story, think of a game that helps to illustrate it, and then to do an art or craft activity to give the children something to take home (and this could be as simple as colouring). I have been grateful of the support of parents, particularly Dan Thomas, to come out and help the group with me. I do think the provision could grow and be more appealing for families in Bridgnorth to bring their children to, but this would require a coordinated team of people, and I’m not ready to be the driving force behind that yet. ## **Stir – (secondary-school-aged young people** ) ## Worship Groups – Simon Scowcroft I am pleased to report that we currently have four regular worship leaders, supported by a wider team who also help lead worship on Sunday mornings. Our regular leaders are: - Andy James - Arlene Clark - Charles Rushworth - Simon I am very grateful to all of these leaders, as well as to those who regularly join the team. I would also like to thank the people who faithfully prepare the words and manage the sound each week. Their behind-the-scenes work is vital and greatly appreciated. We are truly blessed to have such a variety of people involved, each bringing their own style and gifts. This variety helps ensure that our times of worship connect with and encourage many people in their praise of God. We pray that, through worship and music, we will continue to grow closer to God, hear His voice, and experience His presence among us. We thank God for the blessing that music brings to our church life. Partnering with Bridgnorth Youth and Schools Project, there is a Stir Group for secondary-school-age young people on Sunday evenings. ## **Families** Without any specific provision for 0-2’s on Sunday mornings, we ensure there is still a warm welcome for families with younger children, putting out a selection of toys in the main church room, still with a bit more space and toys and a speaker relay in the back room, so that parents whose younger children needed a bit of playing time can access those toys and still participate in the service. **----- Start of picture text -----**

## Small Groups ## **Alpha – Steve Thomson** This year, it has been a real joy to partner with St Marys in running a joint Alpha Course. Working along side Suzan (Vicar) and Vickie (curate) has been a great encouragement and a visible expression of unity across our churches. We welcomed 14 guests onto the course, and we are delighted to report that all 14 completed the journey. This in itself is a wonderful testimony to the level of engagement and commitment from those who took part. In fact, one of the challenges we encountered was bringing the course to a close! Such was the sense of community, openness, and shared discovery that the group were reluctant to finish. People deeply valued the conversations, the relationships that had formed, and the opportunity to explore faith together in a safe and welcoming environment. Among those who joined us were two young women who came along in the wake of the tragic death of American apologist Charlie Kirk. They were prompted by big questions and a desire to explore faith more deeply, and it was a privilege to walk alongside them and others on that journey. Throughout the course, there was a genuine sense of hunger to ask questions, share experiences, and grow in understanding. It was a joy to see friendships develop and to witness people engaging thoughtfully and openly with the Christian faith. We are so thankful for this partnership, for everyone who helped host and lead, and for all that God has been doing in and through the course. ## **Billingsley Homegroup – ‘The Servants of the King’ - Simon and Fritha Scowcroft** The Servants of the King homegroup meets every other Tuesday at 7.30pm at our home, and finishes between 9.30pm and 10pm The original vision was that it would be for a small group of believers to come together to spur one another on in love and good deeds; for encouragement, sharing, fellowship, support and study of the Bible and subjects of the interest at that particular time. **----- Start of picture text -----**

In every meeting we share communion and spend some time praising God. This past year we spent much of the time studying Nehemiah but we also looked at things around the Second Coming Of Christ. We always try to see how The Word can be practically applied to our lives as well as looking at current issues. Each time we gather we spend some time socialising over refreshments and praying for one another and any other needs as they arise. We have a confidential WhatsApp group where we can share news and prayer requests and encouragement between gatherings. We currently have eight members. We also enjoyed a social together at Christmas and look forward to a BBQ in the summer. ## **Faith Under 30 – Cameron Ray** During our first year as a group, we started with nothing — just a prayer and a plan. What began as a small gathering of young Christians and non-Christians quickly grew into a vibrant community, meeting each week for meaningful discussions on faith, fellowship, and fun. We shared engaging conversations, inspiring reflections, and even enjoyed a game or two as we grew together in friendship and faith. Throughout the year, we explored major stories in the Bible, and in the lead-up to Easter we followed a Right Now Media series that guided our conversations. During this period, our group doubled to seven members before we moved on to studying the book of Matthew. Over the summer, we continued to meet, keeping things lighter while spending time outdoors and socialising — by then, our group had grown to twelve members. Toward the end of the year, we ran an Alpha course to open up deeper conversations within the group. Throughout the year we also welcomed special guests who led sessions and shared their perspectives on various topics. ## **Lent Course – Steve Thomson** Our Lent course this year, centred around The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer, proved to be a deeply helpful and timely journey for many of us. We met in lots different settings — a relaxed afternoon group in number 7, a lively evening gathering in the pub, in our home groups and prayer groups — all created space for honest conversation, reflection, and real connection. It was striking how quickly people engaged with the themes of slowing down, creating margin, and reordering life around the way of Jesus. The discussion groups were particularly rich. People shared openly about the pressures of modern life and the challenge of resisting hurry, and there was a real sense that the material wasn’t just being understood, but genuinely lived out. Encouragingly, most people expressed how much they had gained from the course. For many, it felt like a much-needed invitation to breathe again, to refocus, and to rediscover a deeper, more intentional walk with God. ## **Tuesday Study Group – Sheila Blackburn** Our group continued to thrive and grow throughout the year. We are thankful for God’s faithfulness to us as we meet to share fellowship and study His Word. Three members very ably led our Autumn/Winter series which everyone enjoyed – thank you. We began with 8 studies ‘Four Great Loves’ - Loving God, His Word, His People and His Purposes. Each session focussed on revealing a different aspect of God’s love. ## Spring/Summer - Q. What do Joseph of Nazareth, Anna & Simeon, A Blind Beggar, Aquila & Pricilla and Governor Felix all have in common? A. They are all New Testament characters. All in all, it was a meaningful and fruitful Lent journey — one that we hope will continue to shape the rhythm of our lives long beyond the course itself. ## **Low Town Home Group – Steve and Barbara Armstrong** We meet every other Tuesday at 2pm. The most important thing for us as a group is fellowship, both with each other and with our loving Heavenly Father. We start our meeting with a time of worship, praise and prayer, then it could be any one of the following: Someone from the group sharing Invited guest Social Sharing songs that have really blessed us Video clips from people like J John. We also have a WhatsApp group which gets well used, it comes in really handy when any of us have a specific need for prayer or just to check to see how someone in the group is doing. **----- Start of picture text -----**

We delved deeper into their lives; each one an ordinary person, meriting a few paragraphs of scripture. But tracing their impact, we learnt that who we are and what we do is important and we matter to God! 2025 ended using a RightNow Media course. Mike, Pat and Kimberley led us through the series ‘Courage to Stand’ based on the character of Joshua. We came away with the message, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” _**Joshua 1v9**_ ## One-off meetings: Why not come along and join us one evening? Praying from 07.30- 08.30hrs. If you would like to join us please let me know We continue to pray for local, national and international situations and events; particularly praying “for all those in authority” We especially pray for those caught up in the war zones of Ukraine/Russia and Gaza/Israel. We also focus our prayers on the building up of The Lord's body, the Church in our local community. Praying for the variety of church congregations and for our witness in this town and region. We are exhorted to pray without ceasing! ( 1Thess 5 v7) We have been given “great and precious promises” (2 Peter 1 v4) Let us continue to activate these, as we intercede together on behalf of our families, our neighbours, our town, our nation and our world. ## Our Communit y ## Bridgnorth Food Bank – Keith Bowley We continue to meet a very real need in Bridgnorth and the surrounding area. In total we issued 1,916 parcels during 2025 compared to 2,223 in 2024. Thankfully the need has decreased through the year, having started very high at over 50 parcels a week, but settling to the mid 30s towards the end of the year. We supported 392 clients (238 adults and 154 children) during the year, with many being new clients. We are, as always, extremely grateful to the Baptist Church for the use of Number Seven and the church building on Monday mornings. The availability of the main church space itself enables us to provide a welcome drink and cake to everyone and a place for the various support workers to meet clients. Each Monday morning we have Citizen’s Advice, CAP, Housing Support, our chaplain, and often others present as well to offer help and advice. Of course our work is only made possible by the generous support we receive from the community in the form of gifts of food and money, and by the team of about 30 volunteers from various churches and the wider community. **----- Start of picture text -----**

## Bridgnorth Schools and Youth Project – John Prockter Bridgnorth Youth & Schools Project has now completed its 14th year, and we are very grateful to God for all that has taken place. Over the past year, we have continued to serve children and young people through schools work, mentoring, events, and discipleship, seeking to be a steady Christian presence in the life of the town. A large part of our ministry continues to take place in schools. This year we delivered 40 assemblies in primary and secondary settings, and 460 young people attended workshops, including Year 6 transition sessions and events with visiting speaker Sam McKee. We also mentored 59 students, supporting young people who needed encouragement, consistency, and someone to walk alongside them. Alongside this, it has been a particularly encouraging year for Stir, our group for young people exploring faith in Jesus. We moved location, increased how often we meet, welcomed new team members, and saw 23 young people attend, with 14 also joining us at Satellites Festival in the summer. We also launched an after-school Stir group, which opened the door to sharing the gospel with a new group of young people. We also saw encouragement through Anchored, with 14 children attending and very positive feedback from families. One parent shared, “I love seeing my son react so positively to an event that shares the love of God!” Thank you for praying, giving, and standing with us. Our mentoring programme ran for two terms, supporting seven young people. In addition, 53 KS3 students attended Lego Club, with 27 coming four or more times. We also delivered 14 assemblies across Oldbury Wells and Bridgnorth Endowed, reaching hundreds of students. Hikaru workshops engaged 155 secondary students and 260 primary students. A massive highlight was having Samuel and Josh from Stir join me for work experience. They threw themselves into every task, creating and delivering a brilliant resource to 80 primary school kids and helping lead sessions for 225 Year 7 students. Seeing young leaders step up like this is exactly what Stir is all about! ## Ladies Craft Bee on Wednesday - Rosemary Anderson Wednesday afternoons from 1.30 to 3pm are a wonderful to just sit and craft, enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. We bring our own projects – knitting, slow stitching, colouring, cross stitch, embroidery, crochet and relax. Ladies are welcome to join us at Number Seven. Ali, Ruth, Jane, Rosemary. ## Christians Against Poverty – Mark Triggs Last year I said we had seen 102 client cases since reopening of whom 51 were debt free. By the end of 2025, this had risen to 135 client cases with 74 debt free – resulting in 100s of lives now freed from debilitating poverty and debt. We passed £2million debt we have consulted on and £1.45million of debt cleared, both staggering figures. What I have failed to monitor before now is the 100s of others we have helped more broadly, with reducing bills, getting interest stopped on debts, support with housing, benefits, opening bank accounts, ending homelessness, applying for grants, attending court and countless other practical tasks. Sadly, we said goodbye to my co-manager through much of 2025, Lizzie Brown, who is now volunteering with Ellel Ministries near Eastbourne. She sends her love to all. Alan and Ali Muscat continue to offer money coaching courses. Please contact me if you want to train to join them. ## Ladies’ Brunch – Corinne James Since September 2025, we have been on a wonderful new adventure with our monthly Ladies Brunch. The idea was born from a shared desire between Suzan Williams from St Mary’s Church and ourselves to create a dedicated women’s group - a space where we could gather, grow, and simply enjoy each other’s company. We found the perfect home for these mornings in the function room at The Shakespeare Inn, Bridgnorth. It has become a cherished time of friendship and support, filled with laughter and meaningful conversation and we are grateful to our visiting speakers who bring their message from God. Our vision was to create an atmosphere that feels warm and accessible, making it the ideal place to invite friends and neighbours who may not attend church. It’s been a joy to see these connections flourish, and we look forward to many more mornings together. ## Men’s Supper Group – Geoff Bristow The Men's supper group continues to be of interest to approximately 30 men, of which 5 or 6 are non Christian, but also notably, closer friendships being built. I'm pleased to say we have gained a new Christian resulting from originally being invited to our supper group. A big thank you to all the folks who contribute towards preparing tables, those volunteers who cater for 30 hungry men and those people I commandeered to speak so openly about how God has influenced their lives. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless this work and extend His hand over new ideas/ horizons in the years ahead as we move towards a different time and venue. Please feel free to discuss any thoughts you have regarding this ministry, ## Number Seven - Corinne James Number Seven, an integral part of Bridgnorth Baptist Church, serves as a vital community anchor by providing a welcoming space for support, connection, and essential services. The facility operates as a bustling hub of activity, with the Church Office providing consistent administrative support and a point of contact from Monday to Thursday (9 am – 5 pm) and Fridays (9 am – 3 pm). By hiring out our rooms during the day, we are able to host a wide variety of organisations that provide local care and guidance. This includes regular sessions held by Shropshire Recovery, the Dementia Carers Drop-in, and a dedicated Carers Group. These partnerships ensure that vital resources are accessible to those who need them most within our community. Number Seven also facilitates critical lifelines such as Food Bank and CAP (Christians Against Poverty) meetings, which offer debt advice and financial coaching. The building further supports the local younger generation by hosting BYSP (Bridgnorth Youth and School Project) meetings. Community life flourishes through Church Small Groups; Discipleship Groups, Alpha, Tuesday Bible Study, Faith Under 30, while the Open House and Garden Project offer inclusive spaces for people to enjoy nature and to socialise. We are also incredibly grateful for the dedicated individuals who help with our window displays at the front of Number Seven. These creative displays offer a bright, welcoming face to the street and beautifully reflect the vibrant life withing the building. Through this diverse range of room bookings and volunteer efforts, Number Seven continues to be a cornerstone of local life and a testament to the mission of Bridgnorth Baptist Church. **----- Start of picture text -----**

## Open House and the Garden Project – Donovan Gibbons We are glad to have welcomed a diverse group of friends and visitors to Number Seven each Tuesday morning throughout 2025. The space provides a safe haven from the pressures of daily life, whether you choose to spend time indoors, where there are table games and puzzles and a continuous supply of coffee, cakes and relaxed conversation, or outdoors to help with gardening jobs or just enjoy the quiet space and beautiful flowers. Mid-morning we gather indoors to share a brief Bible based ‘thought for the day’, to encourage one another, and to pray. There is always someone to listen sympathetically if you are going through a hard time, and to offer personal prayer inviting God into the situation. Some come along regularly while others drop in occasionally, but everyone is welcome and loved. If you have not been before – please join us one Tuesday morning. ## Together at Christmas - Donovan Gibbons ## Mission A team from Bridgnorth Baptist Church were involved with ‘Together at Christmas’ once again this year, offering a free Christmas dinner for anyone who might otherwise spend Christmas Day alone or find it a difficult time. This was our second year at the new venue generously provided free of charge by Bridgnorth Rugby Club. The event was hosted by ‘Churches Together in Bridgnorth, represented this year by our minister Steve Thomson, Meals were served to around 100 seated guests. In addition, 30 meals were delivered to people in the community who were genuinely housebound. We were overwhelmed by the love and generosity shown by all the volunteers who prepared table decorations and ‘goody bags’ and gave lifts to and from the venue. The kitchen team were brilliant and prepared an excellent Christmas Dinner. A local pop choir came to entertain us, and we had fun with ‘pass the parcel’ and a Christmas Quiz presented by Steve. All in all, a fantastic community event that shares a message of Christian love at Christmas time. ## Kings Kids Farm Report– Ian Seymour Bridgnorth Baptist Church Support for the King's Kids ministry based in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria continues throughout 2025. Regular, weekly, contact was maintained with Alex via WhatsApp. We routinely discussed developments and challenges related to the farm and at the teenage girls Transition House, Bassa, and took the opportunity to pray together over this work and the various security issues in the region In October/November I, again had the privilege of making another trip to Nigeria (my 9[th] since 2017). The main focus of this four week visit was: � installing a small wind turbine and upgrading the solar panel installation. � Repairing the polytunnel constructed last year that had suffered serious wind damage. � Reassessing the aquaponic enterprise and making adjustments to the design and routine management; prioritising the production of Azolla (a small floating aquatic plant, that is very prolific and is proving extremely valuable as a low cost, high quality feed for pigs, chickens and fish). **----- Start of picture text -----**
