## **Vicar’s Report**

Welcome to the 2020 Annual Report. It is no exaggeration to say that 2020 was one of the most challenging years in the history of the Benefice, and the Church in Wales. The Covid-19 pandemic, with its terrifying consequences of lockdowns and distruption of so much we took for granted has transformed how we go about being church. Every report presented below is touched by Covid.

However, I want to start my report by saying thank you. Thank you to everyone who has done so much to help us keep in touch, to make possible what we could do, to innovate where we possible, and not just focus on what we couldn’t do. I want to thank you for your support and encouragement. I hope that as we come to reflect on this time, we will find that we learned more deeply what it means to be community, and committed more fervently to placing at the centre relationship with Christ and each other.

**Worship** . We began the year with a full programme ahead of us, looking forward to another visiting preacher for Holy Week and Easter. Before we got to Mothering Sunday we were in lockdown. Thanks to the availability of modern technology, and Steve Davies’ support, I was able to get live-streamed Sunday worship up and running for the first Sunday. Through the year we have been able to make High Days and Holy Days with special pre-recorded services, including an ecumenical celebration of Ascension, to mark the start of Thy Kingdom Come. As a Ministry Area, we started keeping Evening Prayer over Zoom to bring us together.

**Mission** . It would have been easy to sit back and ignore mission during the pandemic. But that is not the Cockett way! Our online worship provided an unexpected opportunity for outreach. It was a great joy to start the Christian journey with a few new people, a journey that led to baptism to for one person who first encountered the benefice through the live-streamed worship. In the autumn I ran

3

Christianity Explored over zoom. It was a great delight to engage 11 people with the course. Thanks to the support of Sian Parkhouse, Deanery Families Worker for Gower Deanery, we were able to run a Donkey Trail on Townhill. We met several new families in the course of delivering the gifts for completing the trail, and thus have the opportunity to share the Christmas message more widely.

**Ministry** . Maintaining pastoral support was a key objective during Covid. In the early days, my personal mantra was that ‘none should be lost’. Thus I began the pandemic by telephoning everyone on the electoral roll to set up a telephone tree for those who wished to join it, a weekly newsletter, readings sheet with a homily and daily readings, and a liturgy (hand delivered to those without an internet connection). It became apparent how important these were for sharing news and keeping us striving forward after Jesus.

The importance of Social Media has been shown throughout the pandemic. With the challenges of face-to-face meeting, social media has allowed us to offer and reach out. Exactly what this will look like going forward remains to be seen.

During the year I was delighted to prepare 2 adults for baptism (the actual baptism was on Epiphany Sunday 2021). We celebrated 6 weddings, 5 of which took place under Covid-regulations. I officiated at 21 funerals. Very few of these took place in either of our church buildings and presented considerable challenges for supporting the bereaved.

**Governance** . Among the challenges that Covid presented was how we maintained our governance structures. By June 2020 we had managed to arrange ourselves to meet as a PCC on zoom, and met monthly after that. The Church in Wales allowed us to postpone our Easter Vestry until the end of October. We delayed until the end of September and held a Vestry both in person at St Illtyd’s and online over zoom. Of note, we held an election for who represent the benefice on the PCC. A huge thank you to those who served on the

extended 2019-20 PCC, and to those who stood for election for 202021.

**Title change** . In June 2020, I was delighted to hear from the Archbishop that he was formally ‘promoting’ me from Priest-in-Charge to Vicar of the Benefice. It was a strong affirmation of the ministry that we as a benefice are sharing in together here.

**St Nicholas’ on the hill** . The Rev’d Alison Jones left at shortnotice from Townhill on 31 March 2020. I was asked to provide pastoral care for the church community, which the Area Dean kept the incumbency. We added the Townhill community into our telephone tree and weekly newsletter, and I celebrated a Wednesday morning service through the autumn, until the parish was transferred into the care of the Rev’d Mark Williams in November 2020. We wish the Townhill Community every blessing in the next step of their journey.

## **Church Wardens’ Report**

What a year! This time last year (March 2020) we had just gone into lockdown due to the coronavirus. We had no idea of how long it would last, and we were all hopeful that the pandemic would be over by the summer. It has affected all aspects of our lives including our gathering. However, we have continued to worship together and ‘be’ church, but in different ways.

Our year began with the building work at St Peter’s coming to an end. We were all delighted to hear the bell being rung once more. Services in January included a bilingual service for the _Week of Prayer for Christian Unity_ , which was attended by local chapels and churches.

5

January also saw the Carer’s Café, the Baby Group and the Knit and Natter club continue to provide friendship and support to young and old in our community.

In February, our new bookshop opened at St Peter’s and our first and only social event of the year took place – the Shrove Tuesday supper. March saw things change in church as we learned more of the virus. To keep our church family safe, we shared the peace without shaking hands and no longer shared the chalice. On 17[th] March, the Church in Wales suspended worship and Fr Jonathon immediately set about organising an online service for 19[th] March. With the availability of Broadband at the Parish office, St Illtyd’s became even more important during 2020 as the Pandemic took hold Worldwide. Fr Jonathon was able to live-stream services to whoever wanted to receive them, possibly the first to rise to the challenge in the Swansea area. New contacts have been reached via this medium not only around the parish but country-wide and worldwide. We couldn’t meet together, but we could still worship together. The phone tree was established so that everyone in the parish and beyond had an arm around them and a friend to share news with.

Our quinquennial inspections took place during March and more information will follow in the Building Report.

April saw the roll out of our community reading of the book of _Acts of the Apostles_ on YouTube. Just as the early church worshiped in houses, so we too in 2020 were worshipping in our own homes, joined through You Tube, Zoom, Facebook and telephone lines. St Peter’s opened for private prayer in July and our small covid-secure services began in August for those who wished to attend.

Throughout the lockdown period, we remained a close-knit family. We are so appreciative of the tireless work of Father Jonathon in setting up many and varied initiatives such as Flags for Thankfulness and the Donkey Trail for our congregations and the community to participate. It is good to have a new Scout Group starting to meet at St Illtyd’s Hall to give our local young people a good moral education and practical

6

skills to hopefully carry them through their adult lives. We thank those who were able to continue their roles in caring for the church, its’ family and the community – for looking after the buildings, the graveyards, delivering weekly booklets, fundraising and for being a friend on the phone.

The postponed Easter Vestry was held in September and a new PCC was chosen. All out going officers were thanked for their many years of service. It is hoped that the current PCC can build on the work already started by the previous PCC.

_Catherine and Steve_

## **Parochial Church Council**

During 2020, our Parochial Church Council held a gathered meeting in January but owing to the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic all our remaining meetings were held over Zoom.

In January we learned that the work on the St Peter’s belltower has been completed at a cost of £3,982 and also that work on the west wall had also been completed. However, members were disappointed with the finish but as the contractor had finished trading, any redress would be through his insurers. Work on the St. Illtyd’s wall had been hampered through an ingress of water through the roof. In relation to worship, it was decided in order to build relationships with young people, to commence an All Age Service in February. We also reviewed what we had done well and not so well over the past year.

Our June PCC considered our cash flow problems resulting from the consequences of services being cancelled since March. Up to this point we had paid our Parish Share from our Benefice reserves but this was unsustainable, therefore we suspended payments until the publication of the Diocesan Provincial Report. We also put in place all the preparations and administration for our Annual Vestry Meeting. In

7

addition, we set up a Covid Sub-Committee to prepare risk assessments and put in place safeguards for the opening of our buildings post-lockdown.

In July, the PCC had preliminary discussions on the future of the Parish Magazine and agreed to consult widely in respect of a way forward. We also discussed protocols to be put in place for the scheduled August weddings as well as arrangements for the virtual Harvest Service and explored ways to maximise the involvement of our parishioners in the Easter Vestry Meeting.

In September, we held our last PCC meeting prior to our Annual Easter Vestry where the Vicar informed the meeting that the Diocesan accounts team had not as yet adjusted our Parish Share to reflect a reduction in payments from the Representative Body for Covid relief or payment relief to our Mission Area following the Vicar of Treboeth retiring and the Vicar of Townhill leaving post, thus a substantial deficit in parish share payments remained. The PCC resolved that the setting up of Standing Orders for donations by parishioners should be further encouraged as this would assist in the Church regular income to pay the parish share. We also received updates on land ownership issues at St Illtyd’s and the notice board for the external wall at St Peter’s for which a faculty had been completed.

Our belated Annual Vestry Meeting was held on 27[th] September where the Annual Accounts, Mission, Administrative and Fabric Reports were unanimously accepted and auditors for the ensuing year appointed. The meeting was tinged with some sadness as a number of long serving members of the PCC were standing down after many years of stalwart service, resulting in the election of many new faces, who we were confident would serve the PCC very well.

Our first meeting of the newly elected PCC was on the 11[th] October 2020 held on Zoom. At this meeting we agreed that the Benefice review its financial plan. We agreed to change banks for the Benefice account. It was also agreed for a faculty to be submitted for a

memorial bench at St Illtyd’s. We all agreed to undertake a Nativity ‘treasure hunt’. CCTV at St Illtyd’s was also discussed, quotations were requested. St Illtyd’s was to be used as a collection centre for Operation Christmas Child. We also found a volunteer for the Ministry Area Forum.

In our November meeting we finalised the route and dates for the Nativity trail. We were also given details of an online Church in Wales Safeguarding Course the PCC should complete. We learnt that the changing of the Bank will take approximately 4 months due to the pandemic. We had received one quotation for the CCTV at St Illtyd’s and were awaiting two others. It was agreed a survey would be sent out to all our parishioners to ask them about their thoughts on the Parish Magazine. We would all consider engaging a volunteer to assist in the Parish through Time for God.

At our December meeting we unanimously approved the new 2020 Church in Wales Safeguarding Policy. Encouragement was made to the PCC to complete the online Safeguarding training course. We had received all the quotations for installing CCTV at St. Illtyd’s. A few minor details needed to be discussed and then a draft faculty application would be put forward. A good response had been received for the Parish Magazine survey. The details were collated and would be discussed further. It is hoped that we would have a Time for God representative present at our next meeting. Repairs were needed at St. Illtyd’s as there is a water ingress problem. We agreed that this should be looked at by an Architect before making any decisions.

## **St Peter’s Report**

The last service at St Peter’s prior to the lockdown was on 15 March. Services resumed on Tuesday 4 August. Under Covid restrictions, we

9

have had to become used to booking in for services, gelling hands, wearing masks and social distancing. The phone tree has been very good for keeping up to date.

_Sally Jones, Angela Watson and Mary Howard_

## **St Illtyd’s Report**

The year began with Church worship and a new term for church clubs. As the weeks passed, it was obvious that Covid-19 was going to change all aspects of life.

At the end of March, churches closed and the clubs finished. The Sunday service moved online with a service sheet and Benefice Newsletter, delivered weekly. The telephone tree has been greatly appreciated by all members.

In support of the NHS and many organiseations that have continued to support the public, we coloured flags of thankfulness.

In August the Church reopened for a Sunday gathered service. We booked in with Robert Troll. Harvest, Remembrance Sunday and Christmas services continued on line.

We look forward to 2021 and hope for brighter days ahead. We pray for all families and friends who have suffered much sadness and pain. _Margaret Wellington_

## **Fundraising**

The Parish of Cockett has always had an excellent reputation for its ability to fundraise. However, the annual programme of events scheduled to keep our accounts in the black, failed to get off the ground in 2020 owing to the onset of Covid-19.

With our congregations not being able to gather together, our income in 2020 took a colossal hit and sadly, with the two exceptions of the Shrove Tuesday Supper and the Parish 100 Club, the only significant monies raised during the year was through the imaginative efforts of individual church members.

In February, St. Peter’s and St. Illtyd’s received a boost of £1,706 thanks to the funds raised through the Parish 100 Club and our Shrove Tuesday Supper raised a very useful £302.00.

During the summer, Sally Jones made a large number of face masks which she successfully sold together with garden plants and items and raised a brilliant £390 with gift aid.

In August, Colin Hammacott and Adele Cunningham privately bought and sold a large number of embossed torch pens which raised a healthy profit of £300 which they were able to gift aid, therefore, reaching a final total of £375.

During the lockdown three members of St Peter’s, Anne Hammacott, Joan Harris and Dorothy Macken kept themselves very busy using their talents to fundraise by knitting and selling sets of bobble hats and gloves and also some scarves. Their efforts were successful in raising the magnificent gift aided sum of £250 to bolster our depleted income.

11

We are eagerly looking forward to the time when we have received our vaccines and we are able to get together and organise fundraising events once again.

## **Building Committee Report**

## **St Peter’s**

The West Wall project was completed just before the Covid-19 lockdown was imposed. The quality of the work completed inside and outside left something to be desired.

With the last year being dominated by Covid-19 the church has been set out under the Church in Wales guidance for socially distanced services.

During March 2020 the Quinquennial inspections were carried out on both churches. Generally, St Peter’s is in a sound condition. The report raised various observations by the architect such as the ground water gulley at the west wall as needing attention, the Bathstone window mullions were also highlighted as needing attention in the future. Damp issues were observed within the choir vestry to which a suggestion that the lead flashing on the roof may be at fault.

A faculty was approved to fix a Notice Board to the boundary wall adjacent to the main gate. This can be used to inform the community of up coming events. Our thanks must go to Roy Wydenbach for fixing the notice board onto a very uneven surface!

The annual boiler servicing has been completed as well as the fire extinguisher checks. We are blessed to have our own Sexton Dave

12

Macken to maintain and oversee all work at the graveyard. Thank you to Dave and the Team.

Thank you to all who give of the time to keep the church clean and maintained.

## **St. Illtyd’s**

The Quinquennial inspection highlighted a slipped roof tile near the Porch, a crack in the Bell Step, Boiler room door needing repair, also steel beams in the boiler room needing an independent inspection by engineers. It was noted that the Lightening protector was missing. These issues will be addressed in the future.

The beginning of 2020 saw the lighting upgraded to LED lighting inside the church. At the same time the speaker volume control switch was relocated to a manageable height. New lighting was installed to illuminate the carpark area for safety.

The East wall project has been affected due to continued water ingress issues along with contractor availability due to Covid 19 restrictions. As with St Peter’s, this work left much to be desired, and required a second contractor to finish the interior of St Illtyd’s as the original contractor disappeared. In early 2021 a waterproffing solution was applied exterior stonework around the bell tower to help reduce water ingress, and any holes in the stonework were filled. This issue is now nearing completion. We are grateful for Alan Morris’ considerable maintenance work at St Illtyd’s.

We applied for a faculty to permit the installation of a CCTV system to enhance our existing security.

The parish office now has an iMac computer kindly donated and installed by Fr Jonathon to replace the existing old and slow system. The boilers have recently been serviced plus a faulty pump replaced. We thank Alan, Robert and all who keep St Illtyd’s in good order.

## **Webmaster Report**

After a very uncertain year, with many events cancelled, there haven’t been many updates for the website.  The main updates are;

- All contact details were updated and changed after the AGM saw many people step down and new names come into positions. Including added our new benefice Treasurer as admin.

- As there are very limited events being held the ‘events’ page was changed and kept updated with the latest Covid-19 information and links to our Facebook page along with the church of Wales website.

- Our parish services hold details of our online livestreamed services and how to book a place to attend a service.

- Ecumenical service links for YouTube along with the booklets were uploaded.

Due to this I have managed to spend some time looking at the statistics linked to the website. I have found that visits to the site have dwindled. This could be due to lockdowns or more to the fact that younger generations look for social media pages before a website. On average the website is visited 900 times a month, whereas our Facebook page reaches 1500 a month.

_Sarah Picton_

## **Choir Report**

Choir rehearsals were held each Wednesday evening and we eagerly looked forward to Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Little did we realise what was to befall us in the space of a few weeks.

14

This time away has been, and is, a trial and we hope that we will be able to hold choir rehearsals very soon. I know the choristers miss being together and thankfully they are all well and, I understand, singing at home.

We are a small friendly group and we would welcome new members. Each of us has a voice and singing is very therapeutic so why not try something different and give it a try. We meet at 6.30 pm each Wednesday and we would be delighted to see you.

_Eileen Jones_

## **Eucharistic Ministers’ Report**

Only during the first quarter of the year from January to March was it possible to operate this very important ministry with any sort of normality. Just six visits were made during that period and only one to Ty Dewi Sant, the local sheltered housing complex, as just one resident required the service and even he declined further visits due to other family visits.

The four persons who received this monthly ministry were all over 90 years of age and two are centenarians with a zest for life and are eager for the return of the home communion service.

Pastoral visiting to one housebound centenarian has been undertaken with her expressed desire for that contact but with the observance of social distancing and the wearing of masks.

In the future I would hope that this ministry will resume but the need to train more people to take active part in this special ministry is a priority as people are living longer and value the ministry when they are no longer able to attend formal gathered worship.

_Adele Cunningham_

## **Parish Magazine**

The Parish Magazine was published for three months in 2020 (January, February and March) before the continuing Pandemic closed it down.

Once we are able to worship normally, it is hoped that the magazine will start up again, in some form. Mary will be stepping down as editor and Margaret has taken on other roles in the Parish.

Maureen Casagrande is leading a review of what we want the magazine for, in what form and how it could be published. A survey was undertaken with the congregation which asked for opinions and ideas about the way forward. Thank you to all who took part. The benefice will be consulted about possible changes.

Thank you also to all who have supported the magazine in the past with the articles, reports, proof reading, printing and distribution; and to Jonathon and Pat Hathaway for their work too.

_Mary Millington and Margaret Lewis_

## **Churchyard Report**

The work in the churchyard was again severely disrupted but not this year so much with the weather but by the lockdowns due to the covid 19 pandemic. Despite the lockdown some work was carried out and paths and open spaces were maintained.

You may have seen the Evening Post report on the 22[nd] June 2020 which reported on the work done before the burial of Glyn Sullivan by his grandson and friends to clear the area where the burial was due to

16

take place. It was good work and well appreciated and has enabled us to prepare the area for ridding it of the bramble that is becoming a problem throughout graveyard.

It was disappointing to find no mention of the other volunteers that regularly work to keep the area accessible to visitors. These people turn up regularly week after week weather permitting and work hard to maintain it. I would like here to give them the mention that the Post failed to report.

First to Andy Powell and his friend who is clearing the area opposite that report in the post and has given us a good chance to increase the well maintained areas of the churchyard and to Roy Wydenbach, Colin Hammacott and Trevor Lewis who regularly turn up and maintain the approaches to the church. It is a pleasure to travel along Cockett Road and see the neat and tidy graves in front of the church.

Finally, I would like to report on the passing of John Parcell. John was a regular volunteer in the churchyard until ill health prevented him working but although finding hard to walk he managed to maintain the paths and open areas by use of the ride-on. He is sorely missed.

_Dave Macken_

## **St Peter’s Community Centre**

The Centre is normally well used by many and various groups, as well as the Church for occasional big events such as the Christmas Fayre or fund raising coffee mornings. It is the only venue of any size available in this area for children's parties and other incidental gatherings.

The usage of the Centre has been yet another casualty of the lockdowns due to the Covid pandemic. Only a few groups who were able to fulfil the rigorous risk assessment requirements were allowed

17

to use the centre for a brief time during the Autumn before another lock-down halted the usage once again.

Necessary repairs have been carried out to the guttering but all other plans for the Centre following our acquisition of a 20 year lease of the centre from the Diocesan Education Trust have been put on hold for 2021.

_Adele Cunningham_

## **Mother’s Union Annual Report**

We commenced our meetings in February when the officers elected were Doreen Boor (Branch Leader), Joan Harris (Secretary) and Pat Hathaway (Treasurer).

Our speaker in March was William Cheung from the Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service. It was a very interesting and informative talk on safety in the home. That was the last of our meetings for the year as March 23[rd] saw us all in lockdown due to the coronovirus pandemic.

Mothers’ Union produce a quarterly magazine ‘MU News’ but due to everyone now at home they “went digital” which is received monthly to pass to our members. We have all received the Prayer Diary which helps to keep us focused on our worldwide family.

In 2019 we started assisting in the distribution of secondhand school uniforms of one of our local primary schools, Gors Community School. Fortunately, this year our Vicar was able to deliver a substantial amount to some very grateful families. Surplus clothing was donated to the Romanian Aid Foundation (South Wales) Charity.

We also supported Faith in Families with donations received from members.

18

The Safe Houses project: Once again thanks to Sue Burgum for delivering our toiletry donations to the organiser not long before lockdown.

It has been a difficult year for everyone but as all our members are part of our Church family our phone tree makes sure all are safe and well. We look forward to being able to meet again in 2021, 2.30pm on the first Thursday of the month, whenever we can. New members welcomed.

_Doreen Boor_

## **St Illtyd’s Ladies’ Guild**

Before lockdown came, we very much enjoyed C.A.O.S., who gave a production of ‘Sister Act’, an excellent performance which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Our numbers have declined, but we hope and pray, that if we start up again, we might be able to encourage other ladies to join us. We have a lovely afternoon, meeting up with other ladies, with either a speaker or entertainment, followed by a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits, as well as a little chat. There is also a Raffle, with a weekly contribution of £2 covering everything.

Sadly, we lost one of our members this year, namely Elaine Evans who as a really lovely lady. We shall miss her very much.

_Margaret Wellington_

## **Key’s Club**

Looking back over the year, little did we know or could we have ever imagined how our exciting annual social programme of events was to

19

be decimated by a virus that first reared its head in a city on the other side of the world and would have such an impact, that it would change the pattern of our daily lives as we know them.

We continued our successful 2019/20 programme in the New Year when we welcomed club member John Burgum, as our guest speaker. As the former Sports Editor of the Evening Post, John told us many interesting stories and humorous anecdotes about the vast number of sporting heroes he met during his long journalistic career.

Colin Wheldon talked to us in February about the history of Swansea castle and the part this landmark has played in the city since it was first built as a wooden structure in 1107.

In March members enjoyed a musical evening when local boy Roland Emmanuel entertained us with a mixture of music and interesting stories which unfortunately, was the last occasion in which we shared fellowship with each other.

Sadly, from that point, our speaker on the History of the Mumbles Lifeboat, our AGM and our visit to the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh in Brecon all had to be cancelled because of the pandemic and we have been unable to meet since.

However, we have endeavoured to keep in touch with our members through a summer and new year newsletter and we look forward to being able to meet and enjoy the company of each other once again.

May I offer my sincere thanks to Roy Harris our Programme Secretary, for organising our excellent albeit curtailed monthly programme together with Richard Nedin our Social Secretary for organising our fish and chip night and Christmas dinner arrangements so efficiently, Steve Davies our Chairman for the support he gives me at club meetings, Ian Miles, Treasurer, for his stewardship of the club’s finances, Les Boor for writing the excellent Parish Magazine reports and our committee members and membership for the support

20

they have given me throughout this year, for which I am exceedingly grateful.

_Colin Hammacott Club Secretary_

## **Christmas Savings Club**

This year, only a few people continued to save, which was due to Covid, limited church services, and people not being able to meet. Bank interest was £4.02, and with the £90.00 joining fees, we had £94.02 to pay into the interest account. This money is kept for anything special the church might need, other than day to day running costs. This year we purchased bibles and books to sell in church, costing £243.82. The balance of the account now stands at £704.53.

Thanks goes to everyone who participated in the Christmas Savings, I hope you will continue to support this venture. Everyone is welcome to join.

_Pat Hathaway_

## **Ty Hafan**

The total raised in 2020 for this charity was £321.05. This was made up from Norman’s jar, a £50.00 donation, and people giving me their small change. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this deserving cause.

Ty Hafan is totally funded by charitable giving, and needs three million plus each year to maintain and run this very important service for parents and families. Please continue to support this charity.

## **Thursday Club Report**

_This report was compiled in February 2020 just a few weeks before the UK went into lockdown. The group has been in abeyance since._

At the AGM in June 2019 Marilyn Hart was re-elected as Secretary, Adele Cunningham as treasurer, Pat Hathaway as Social Secretary and myself as chair. We have the “official” roles but there are many other members who contribute to the group as there is always something to be done: setting the room up, organising the refreshments week by week, writing up for the magazine, checking up on absent members, sending cards to them etc, etc, the list is endless.

We’ve had a lovely year since our last AGM: our last meeting up after the AGM was our summer trip. We had a ‘two centre’ day: we went to Saundersfoot for the morning and then on to Tenby afterwards. Both places are still absolutely charming, oh and yes; we had an absolutely gloriously warm, sunny day. A good time was had by all.

Over the year we have had many fascinating speakers ranging from ‘How to make a will’, history of Joan of Arc, to the Brangwyn Panels & much more beside. We have also had the occasional ‘In House” evening as well as our annual post-Christmas dinner in January at Norton House Hotel and trip to the Taliesin Theatre to see Cockett Operatic Society perform Sister Act.

During the year we have included the St Peter’s special Thursday services in our calendar and encouraged our members to support them as well other events like Parish coffee mornings, quizzes etc. We also support various charities throughout the year; it may be collecting milk bottle tops, buying raffle tickets for various causes and so on.

22

Thursday Club is open to all ladies both within and without the parish; we have had some new members over the last year or so and will always be happy to welcome many more. Please come and join us.

## **St Illtyd’s Parents/Carers and Toddlers Group**

Until Covid restrictions came into force, the Toddler Group continued to meet at St Illtyd’s Church Hall. Our toddler group is a really friendly, relaxed place to bring a child. We love to see smiling faces and hear children laughing. Sarah is N.N.E.B trained, and has been ably supported by Mary Millington.

We have toys that are age appropriate to encourage parents/carers to sit with their respective child and engage with them. These toys are cleaned before getting put out and any soft toys washed in a washing machine.

We offer advice to anyone who wants it and only give advice based on our own experiences. We point people in the right direction for whatever they need. We do charity events and also have a local charity for dementia come and sell hand crafted goods. They are two lovely ladies who joined us before lockdown and sold lots of lovely crochet blankets, gloves, scarves and hanging decorations.

We've done coffee mornings for MacMillan and raised lots of money for them. Also, we had Usbourne book sellers to come and sell books at a reduced price. We do try to do our bit for the community where we can.

23

We hope to rebuild the group again after lockdown ends. Mary has stepped down from the Toddler Group so we will need to build a new team for 2021 and onwards. I hope that this can involve a closer relationship with St Illtyd’s.

## **Carers’ Café and Art Group**

Like most other gatherings, due to the global COVID pandemic and the ensuing limitations placed on group meetings and social distancing, the Carers’ Café have not been able to meet since early 2020. Indeed, the group, who are made up of carers, the bereaved or those with life changing illnesses, have to take extra precautions. Sadly, this also means that our member numbers have remained static at 9. But, we have had interest from others to attend - as and when the world returns to a new normal.

The biggest achievement we made in 2020 was seeing how much the group have supported each other through these hard times of isolation, and they have really gained a sense of community. We continue to meet on our usual day and time but via video link, to just talk and socialise. As our members are, mostly, from an older generation where technology can be challenging, to see them all join our video call each week to have a coffee and check in on each other has been heart-warming. They also have regular conversations on social media, swapping recipes and stories and just having a general chat. (The one person, who due to her age couldn’t join us on social media, is in regular contact by phone with several of the other members.)

I have continued to write art exercises weekly for most of the year, with several of them challenging each other to take part. But this proved difficult as most people don’t have access to art materials at

24

home and exercises were limited to drawing or collage. (Beetroot painting did prove very popular!) Art can be difficult via video-link, so it has temporarily taken a less important role. We are hoping that when the much-needed vaccination is introduced to the population, we can also re-start the Carers’ cafe and our creative activities.

## **Parish 100 Club**

Despite the challenges that 2020 has presented, St Peter’s Church 100 Club continues to thrive with membership rising from 210 members in 2019 to an amazing 237 members in 2020.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were unable to hold our very successful annual Fish & Chip Supper and Grand Christmas Draw, which is a major fundraiser in our 100 Club calendar. Therefore, we had to think outside the box and Colin, independently of the church, organised a paper Cryptic Quiz to bolster 100 Club funds which raised double the amount of money that we normally would have raised in our Fish & Chip Supper.

Thankfully, this contributed to 2020 being our most financially successful year ever, resulting in a profit of £2,269.50 which assisted in boosting the funds of St Peter’s and St Illtyd’s.

We wish to record our thanks to Anne Hammacott for all her help behind the scenes throughout the year, together with Sally Jones and Adele Cunningham for helping out in collecting subscriptions and distributing receipts in these difficult times.

Special thanks to those members of both churches together with their families and friends for their unstinting and loyal support for the 100 Club, we are most grateful to you all.

## **Operation Christmas Child**

Once again in 2020, we were involved in Operation Christmas Child and acted as one of two collection points in the city. Thanks to the congregations of St. Peter’s and St. Illtyd’s and their families, together with 15 of our friends from Fieldbay Limited, we were able to send off 160 shoeboxes for distribution to disadvantaged children in the poorest parts of the world, who otherwise, would not experience the joy of receiving a Christmas present. Amazingly, this is an increase of 44 boxes on last year during what was a very difficult time in our country’s history when everyone’s movements and ability to get out and about were severely restricted.

In addition, we were able to donate an additional £100 towards shipping costs thanks to funds raised through the knitting exploits of Anne Hammacott, Joan Harris and Dorothy Macken.

The kindness of our congregations in 2020 cannot be overemphasised as because of Covid-19, many schools and churches were not able to participate, resulting in the total numbers of boxes donated by other organisations being severely affected, therefore, our efforts were even more important in bringing the joy of Christmas to children we will never meet. We are most grateful to everyone who donated boxes filled with gifts for the Shoebox Appeal for their kindness and generosity.

_Colin & Anne Hammacott_

## **Self-denial box at St Peter’s**

The money raised for charities this year (£980.05) was less than normal due to Covid-19. It was sent to the following charities:

## **The Strollers**

The past year was a washout for the strolling fraternity because of the many lock-downs and meeting restrictions that we were required to observe due to the pandemic. But, the one and only walk we managed was on March 15 when just four of us met for a walk along the coastal path at Penclawdd. Happily we joined with many others in the newly opened Ice Cream parlour at the finish of the stroll little realising that this would be the first and last strollers meeting for the year.

Phil Mattey our wonderful inspirational nonagenarian stroller companion died on 19 February 2020 and his was the last “big” funeral service at St Peter's before the first lock-down and we were thankful that we could be there to celebrate his life and give thanks for pleasure of his company on life's journey.

We look forward to strolling into the future with confidence and purpose in 2021 armed with the Covid vaccine and a determination to make to most of each day, wonderful friends and our glorious countryside

## **Painting for Pleasure**

Membership has remained the same. It was good to return after the Christmas break in friendship and fellowship, with every intention to prepare and arrange for our annual Art Exhibition, with the funds raised to be donated to local charities. Alas it was not to be due to the Coronavirus (Covid 19) Pandemic which has blighted our lives in all aspects of church and community life.

At our last meeting on 11/3/20 we were told that all classes were cancelled until further notice. We are truly indebted to Adele Cunningham, our group organiser, for keeping contact by telephone with all members on a weekly basis regarding their welfare and wellbeing. Our members have expressed their thanks for these contacts over the months of "lockdown".

During May we were notified of the death of Anne Lovell, a past member for many years. We will always remember her artistic flair, as well as her cheerful banter and sharp wit. A wonderful character. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Adele was present at the internment of her ashes at St Peter’s, as an acknowledgement of her involvement with the Painting for Pleasure group.

We look forward to the day that Painting for Pleasure will restart, so that we can renew the close bond of companionship and friendship we have always had in the Painting for Pleasure Group once again.

## **Diocesan Conference 2020**

Due to the Covid pandemic, no diocesan conference was held in 2020.

## **Deanery Conference**

The one Deanery Conference scheduled for before the Pandemic was postponed. Thus, no Deanery Conference was held in 2020.
