TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 5 APRIL 2024

Achievements and performance

The board of trustees are satisfied with its achievements and performance during the year.

Work has been proceeding satisfactorily on the new school in Nepal, at Payunswara (detailed in the report for 2022-2023), though the organisers, the New Zealand-based First Steps Himalaya, have had to surmount considerable physical problems posed by the remoteness of the village.

Meanwhile, we have pressed ahead with further projects in Nepal, working this time with the UK-based Pahar Trust (which originated in the Isle of Man).

The initial project with them is to rebuild the earthquake-damaged premises of the secondary school at Tangting, in the hills to the north of Pokhara. The Shree Himalaya Milan Secondary School provides education for around 100 pupils, up to the age of 16.

The damaged first floor of the existing building was to be replaced with a new pre-fabricated steel framed floor, while the existing ground floor was to be refurbished and reinforced to provide greater earthquake resilience. The Trust donated £24,000, almost half of the estimated costs (the local community and the municipality between them provided 40% of the costs; Maidstone Girls Grammar School also contributed). The work has been progressing according to schedule.

At the Annual General Meeting (held at 83 Tooley Street, London SE1 2TF) on January 7, one of our trustees, Lex Webster, decided to support a further project with Pahar, on a more ambitious scale than our Trust had contemplated on its own. He and a friend and colleague Ali Cashmore, have jointly funded a new building for the Shree Jana Jibraj Sushila Secondary School at Jhimpa, Baglung District. A much larger school, it has over 300 pupils in the basic primary level, and around 60 in higher grades.

They have providing a total of £60,510, with a further £20,000 coming from the local community and the municipality.

Like Tangting, the building was damaged by the 2015 earthquake and was in such a poor condition that it is being demolished and replaced by a new six-room building, on two floors. Constuction work has been proceeding apace.

In India, the problems with sending funds to the Maoyang school, in Manipur state – reported last year – were resolved during this period, though the money (£9467) for the 2023 annual running costs did not reach the school until the summer; happily, the local organisers, the SACSAS charity, were able to ensure that the children's education continued without interruption.

Later in the financial year, a further £9167 was sent to cover the running costs of the school for the calendar year 2024.

Only a minimal amount was left in the Trust's bank account at the end of the financial year, but more money will be pumped in before the next outgoings are due.

Financial review

The trust recorded a deficit from its activities for the year in the sum of £ 6,565 It received income totalling £106,760 and its expenses came to £113,325 in the year.

The unrestricted reserve fund brought forward from last year, £13,316 is reduced to £6,751 as a result of deficit from its activities in the year.

Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised in the year of receiving the the donation.
