Report of the trustees for the year ended 31 October 2024
Th¢ Friends of Bromoon Cemetery was registered as a charity (registTation number 1181027)
on 6 D￿ernber 2018. At this time the previws charity was ￿111 operating as The Friends of
Brompton Cemetery (registration numbtt 298605). The transfer date was i l May 2019 an
as of this dat4 assets wtre tranSf￿red to the new charity. a Charitable IncorporateAI
organis￿l0n rcioi.
The trustees present the sixth rqxrt and financial statements of the CIO for the year ended 31
October 2024. The financial statements have been prepared in ac￿rdanc￿ with the accounting
policies s& in note i to the arxiku)ts and comply with th¢ charity's constitytioo the
Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statern￿t of R￿0￿mended
Practice applicable lo charities preparing their aCc(A￿ts in accordance with the Financial
Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published on 16 July 2014.

The Friends exist to hdp to establish Brompton as a living model of an hist￿1¢
cemetery playin8 an active part in mcxlern ￿￿iety. Our aims are to hdp to restore and rnaintsin
the building5, monuments and landscape in cost<ffective way4 and to enabl¢ their full use.

funeral busines& archiv4 monumentsl swuary. fauna and flo￿ thcatirn and 1nte￿retatiC
recreation and Social activity. We want to expand public awareness and enjoyment of this
wonderful -lun￿. in a part of Loftdon WIth￿t adequate open-air recreational amenity. The
aims of the Friends have been strongly reinforced by the Hwitage and Big Lottery Funds grant
lo the Cemetery.
This has been unchanged in the Chairfs Report for Many years and is reinforced by
the objectives agreed with The Royal Parks in the Joint Working Group to sustain the
Restoration Project's legacy.

Achievements and perforniaDce- Chair's Report
Over the last year the Friends of Brompton Cemetery (FOBC) has continued to perfotm well.
Maintaining the previous year's commitment to building resilience as well as delivering on
three key Ltsjectives. All of vknich support the FOBC vision of premation and restordtion of
the Cemetery. Thr￿gbC￿ the last twelve months the fo(ats has been on C￿S011daI1On. I am
ddighted to report that visitor nwnbus have increased across the boar(L
The Inform*ion Centre has m05t days, staffed by dedicated volunteeT3: providing
infomatioffj assistance l(K*tng graves and selling b(￿MerchandISe. weJrA)ming in excess
of 4.200 visitors. Utilisation of the large meelino rcom has increased by both FOBC and The
Royal Parks (TRPX FOBC holding vati￿5 meetin8s as well as volunteer events.
Volunteer recTUitmeth has been vtsy activq holding monthly recrui1m￿t sessions. The
challenge is to ensure we retain these new recrnits. To further engage volunteers, an
Enablernent function was established. arrangin8 eV￿ts and activities to bring volunte￿5
together. This is proving most successfvl.
The Chapel hosted a diverse range of ev&it4 attracting over eight th￿sand visilors (excluding
Open Day). ￿ season starÉ&l in March with International Women's Dty" we offered tea for
visitors after the guided tour. Over the following months we beld two life drawing classe
eight art exhibition4 a celebralion of the life of Archbishop Anthony BIcM)m, the launch of a
book on the history of West BrOmptO￿ a tslk on the life of Henry Cole. a p)ety workshop. a
concert given by a IIKal community choir. the Celebr8tion of Life events curated by cw Artist
in Residence involving Iixal schoolchildren and art College4 the wreath-making event ID
¢onjunction with Emma Sparre-Newman and the gardening team of TRP. and finally (w
wonderful annu81 ChTiStmas Conc￿.
Guided tours continue to be popular. The increased advertising of the Sunday tours has been
very positivq rdising awareness and b￿kIng$. We ran forty-seven Sunday T￿r$. averaging
seven visitors per twr. ]kning the year. we a range of fascin￿1ng spe£ialist Iwrs -
Symbolism. Common Gtave4 Wildfiower Walk and Theatrical tours. In addition. a new,
unique Scent Stroll designed to engage the senses commenced. As alway4 our catacomb twrs
were extremely popular. selling as s(x)n as they are advertiwa. There were eight bespoke
tcws arranged.
Membership numbers remain faiTly ststic. si￿-uP of new member5 at v2riou5 events such as
Open Day. counterbalances those who unfortunately do not renew. Discussions continue
regarding payment me£lw)isms - Standing ord￿ PayPal and in the Information Centre.
Direct Debit is not an Option for FOBC. It is param(xMrt that the payment pro¢ess is simple and
user-friendly and that we continue to remind members of renewal dates.

Open Day on Sunday 111 Septembff was la￿diblY successful: attendal by record number of
visitors. swelled by the Chelsea football fans! The event brW togethetthe local community
for a joyous day in the sunshine as well as raising ftlljds for FOBC. A new attraction was the
plant stsll led by the Gardening ￿T￿p and TRP Head Gardww. This proved to be a big hit
with visitors and one we WLxlld l(x)k to repeat agai￿ The Opth Day team who organised this
amazing eV￿t worked tirdtssly to ddiver a fantastic day for all. We are also grateful to TRP
for thear support and &8sistance both planning and (ffl the day.
The FOBC ma8a2ine goes from strength to str￿8th. We were fortun*eto attract a new highly
experienced editor who led the rfrde5l￿1 and refresty introducing new c(ntributors and ideas.
The breadth of articles and feattw has received wat feedback. (￿r magazine distribution
team continue to provide excellent supporL collating and distributing your copies.
Financially we remain in a healthy position. Revenue fr￿n bcx)kther¢lwidi4 events
and donations have incTeased. Plus our investrAents continue to wforni well. This is
important as we must a)sure FOBC have sufficient funds f(Y the futh.
Our working relationship with TRP remaiDS stron& Thi5 bas been help￿ by the arTivaJ of the
new Cemetery Manw last year. We hold regular formal and iDformal meetings to discuss
and plan Cemetery matters. l aIso attend TRP Chairs forum along with colleagues from the
other parks: shatin8 idea4 OPPOTtiJniti¢s and concerns.
In summary, 2024 proved to be another good year for FOBC and Brompton Cemetery.

Financial Reviejv

The totsl value of the Friends, assets increased from £350.575 at 31 Octthtt 2023 to £395,623
at 31 October 2024. The main reason for this was an in(Tease in the value of cw investments
in Charifund and Charibonl nwed by M&G Investments (including the notional dividend
income which is reinvest￿).
We received a fidl year's thsCrI￿l0nS and investment income. We held an Open Day. there
were guided tours and a Cbristmas conr£rt Our income from dwitsble aclivities increased to
£14.004 (2023: £12.195).
ExpendityTe for the full year w8s £14,594 (21Y23: £13.791). Much of these costs related to
administration and production of magazin< but we al￿ made a grant of £].0￿ to an Arts
project with local schools in Collabo￿lOn with (w knist in ResEden¢e.
Policyfcy holding reser￿$ and why they are held
Until the forni¢r Friends, charity receiv￿ a significant legacy funds wtt¢ never as much
as £20.(K(), and we held all the money in w general bank acc4Jmt for use when necessary.
When the legacy of £430.(KKI w&8 in June 2016 we d￿lded (Njr policy w(wld be to
spend ab￿rt half of it over the next few year& and to keep a balance of roughly £200.OCK) for
use in later years. The legacy was very genercwsly left to us in will by Mrs aara Watezs
(and a further £16.274 was received in 2017).
We see the Cemetery business as a long-tern) issu¢ stretching indefinitdy into the future. The
Cemetery is 180 years old and we VI￿]1$C it being thtte for at le&8t &s long into the fvture.
Moreover working as we do in c105e partnership with The Royal Parks. who manage the
Cemetery. while carefillly maintstning our independence as a volunteer group. our position
will be the Stronger in influencing improvements to the Cemetery by holding significant fimds.
Structur& Governance and Management
We were registered as a new thaTity ID the name of Friends of Brompton Cemetery. charity
number 1181027. This chaTity is a Charitsble Incorporated OrgaDisation (CIO) and was
registered on 6 D￿ernber 2018. The forniation of the CIO was approved at the AGM of our
fornier charity in 2018. We Iransfured all a&8ets over to the n¢w clJaTity as of 31 May 2019.
OrgaT7i5ational Struchire
We have a membership of ab￿rt 410. ab(Rrt 70 active vclunteers heJpin8 with the activities in
which we are involved in the Cemetery. and a Ccxrllnittee wonsible for managing the CIO i
line with the Constitution. The volunteers work in grwps ac￿)rdIng to the nature and location
of their work eacb grwp IiDked dosely ￿ at least on¢ Memb￿ of the Commitke.

There is an Annual G￿e￿al meeti￿ U￿￿lY in May or June each year. at which axisting
Conimitke members may be redth4 alongwith the eI￿lOn ofany new commit￿ members.
Any member of the CIO may stand for el￿1￿ and v(*e at the AGM.
The Conllnittee bas a Chair. a Deputy Chair. an Honorary Secretary and an Honorny Treasurer.
Within the Committee there were orlwlly gx TTuSt￿. the Chairmao the Deputy Chair, the
Honordry Secretary and Treasurer and three other Committee members. The fornier Chairnan
and life President Arthur Tait died in January 2021, his successor Elise Ornittod stepped down
as Cbair in June 2022 and David Beauthamp diol in August 2022. Sarnh Elli5 was appointed
as a new Tn￿le£ at the AGM on 13 May 2023 and Elise Omierod resign￿ on the same date.
Ben Millington Buck was app)int•J as a fiftb Tnth 25 2023.
Sarah Ellis is the Chair and Ann Mulcare is the D4wty Cbair. In addition to the five Trustees,
there were seven Cornrnittee members at 31 Othober 2024. Camilla Nelson and Bill Gallagh
were elected as new Con)mittee manbers at the 2024 AGM.
All Committee members and adive volunteffs do their wc¥k for the Charity and for the
Cemew unpaid. We ate all volunteen and we employ no staff.
