When R£dbTidge Rainlx)w ConllDuDity vlas created in 21￿ ￿ part of the Change-up progrnmme. I knew it
was & very special organisation. Not only is there a need for solidarity. community, and Awa￿￿$s-raISlns of
the issues and Conce￿ impathing th¢ LGBT(2+ Coroll￿ty in Redbridge, but there is also a need to org8lli8e
and contribute to the place-rnaking of Redbridge.
I joined Redbridge Rainbow Community &8 an alty in2009. and the organisation I ran 8t the time, the Refugee
and Migrant Fonun of Essex and LOnth￿ was pro￿1 to host Rainbow until 2017. We saw day in and day out
the struggles of migrant and asylum seeker LGBT(y individuals. we knew that hurt and f¢9r rdn deep in the
local community. At the same (ime, ignorance a￿1 preiudlce were also rifc amongst institutions an(L sadly,
others in ciTr'll society. It is essential also to understatid that it was not all doom and gloom. under several
fantsstic lead offic¢rs, Rainbow was able to thrive aDd bring joy into so peiyl¢'s lives by celebrating
and focusing oll LGBWF heritagc, arl4 and cultyre. This w&s at Icast onc way of ensuring visibility.

us in different directions. Recognising that ther¢ was still a need to continue and build irt the worK Redbridge
Rainbow b￿a￿e donnaDt for some years. E took on the Chair (cven though f￿1]ng wo¢fillly inadequate in
SW)POTtillg the community) because we knew a time would come when RairLiM)w would need to be ￿tIVe alld
engaged llgain-my thaDks to Judith Garfield and Mark s￿￿, T•kno were both in¢tYdibl¢ supports during th¢
p¢rAOd.
tn 2023. we reffliit¢d Sinion Sbaw and tasbj bim with getting Redbridg¢ Rainbi>w back on its feeL Under
Simon's1¢od¢rship, Rainbow h&8 re¢oDn¢Gted with the Ioc81 LGBT(y community, wukthg a Sltrvey and
niany listening exercises, and engaged with Redbridge Council, the NHS, the p)li¢¢, the local commutiity, llnd
the voluntary sector to ensure that there isith infommtion and underst4nding of lh¢ cornmunity.
In strengthening Redbridge Rainbow, w¢ also knew that we needal to CTeate opporttinities for new trusle¢8. 1
am d¢lighied to sec that the board kn gone from a small group of th￿te¢S to a strong, vibrpnt, and
diverse management conllnittee of eight over the last Y￿r-M1)re than doubiing the support and cntlllLsiasm
for the organisation. Sadly, we SUth￿Y lost Dave Moreton during the y￿. had become a Teally 8(￿d
fricnd of th¢ orgallisation.
We would be nothing without our funtss and our relentless thanks to the Walkin8 and Cycling Grants
Schone and Healthwatch Redbrid8¢. &5 well as our World Aids Day RED RUN team and other ittdivith￿l
donors for sUPPOrt for activities in 2023-24. We are also to Nati¢)td Lottery Awards for All Bnd
R¢dbridg¢ Couucil for agreeing to support our work from 202425.

last but not least Richard Haywood who has tak¢n over &8 Chair. Richard has been a pillar of d¢dication,

organisation.
I will always remain an ally to RedbrId￿ RainiNTh Communtty. and 1am pleased th8t OUT decision to push
through the dark days of the pandcmic ljas resulted in a joyous. ￿>SitIve organisation that not only strves the

As part of our relaunc￿ we h8v¢ made cxtensive efforts to r¢-engage LGBTIV people who live, work, S￿dY
or s(Kialise in Redbridge. We were very pleased that over 50 people ¢nga8ed in our community survey and
worLqhops to shape our future work. We also attended Waltham Forest Pride to incre&8e awaren¢ss of the
org8Diqation.
Over 60 ￿0p1¢ attcnded our events throughout the y￿. including our co￿Ultation work8hop5. Winter
Gathering which cornbined craft and dance, LGBT+ I￿StOry Month heritage event (run ill partnership witb
E&8tside Community Heritage) and the first of our new monthly 'Redbridge Rainlx)w on the Movel. walks in
MarL'h. These events have been well-re¢£ived witb local LGBT￿ people and alli¢s in particular appreciating
enjoyable opportLthiti¢s to ¢om]ecL
