Wyre Forest Youth for Christ Annual Report January - December 2024 Prepared by Brigette Whitley and Barry Mason
Introduction
This report will capture the work of Wyre Forest Youth for Christ from March 2024 to March 2025. It reflects the leadership transition from Barry Mason, who had faithfully served as Director for six years, to Brigette Whitley, who excitedly took over this role in October 2024.
Vision
While there is a new director, the mission of Wyre Forest Youth for Christ remains unchanged, we want to see young people’s lives changed by Jesus. We want to see engagement with young people in the Wyre Forest in a way that allows them to experience the love of a God who cares for them. We continue to partner with and champion those who are already invested in the lives of local youth, including local churches and schools.
Note from Former Director
This report covers the final two academic terms of my time as Director, and continues into Brigette taking up the responsibilities.
It has been a real pleasure and absolute honor to have served as Director since January 2019. Whilst I leave the role with so many things not yet fulfilled, I am encouraged by the progress we have made as a charity over the last 6 years. Considering the struggles so many faced during the Covid19 pandemic lockdowns, even just surviving as a charity is an achievement.
However, we have done so much more…
-
Established foundations of positive fellowship and partnership between so many churches in Wyre Forest and the surrounding areas, focusing on youth ministry;
-
Relationships with secondary schools, introducing ourselves to senior leadership, delivering lessons and clubs, and building reputation to be able to partner with schools in serving young people;
-
Church youth ministry, being started, nurtured and developed in several local churches. Each of these expressions has the potential to share the Christian faith with so many young people beyond the church congregation;
-
Collaborative youth events - it has been great to see you groups/leaders working together to run events and attend a summer festival together. This has enabled individual smaller church youth groups to be part of something bigger and help young people form foundational friendships.
I am encouraged that Brigette has such a strong heart and vision for how each of these areas can grow and have much greater impact than they have so far. I fully support our new director being appointed in to the role, and am looking forward to continuing to serve this ministry in the role of a trustee.
Church Youth Ministry
Wyre Forest Youth for Christ continue to connect with different church youth leaders to explore how we can support them reach young people.
Wyre Forest Youth for Christ is committed to supporting the excellent youth work being carried out in local churches. We maintain regular connections with churches, embracing a diverse range of denominations and striving to cultivate a ‘kingdom culture’ where youth leaders and young people come together, united by their love for Jesus.
Our church ministry includes hosting monthly Wyre youth events. Our events have included a post-Satellites party, family bonfire night and Christmas climbing at the Hub. Our peak attendance was at the Bonfire Party, where over 100 people joined us, thanks to inviting families of young people. Typically, most events attract around 50 attendees.
The Summer Camp at Satellites saw us take four different church youth groups to the event. Satellites, hosted by Youthscape, provided a variety of activities, sports, and evening programs, along with worship and Bible teachings. At our own village camp, we were blessed to share meals and fellowship together, and several young people made commitments to follow Jesus—one even made the decision twice, just to be sure!
Schools Connections
Our aim is to serve schools in a way that enables them to share the Christian faith in a relevant and meaningful manner, empowering students to make informed decisions about their own beliefs.
Barry established valuable connections with key figures at Bewdley and Holy Trinity Schools. We continued to build on our engagement through school community focus days. In and through schools, we engaged with 209 individual students through over 2610 face to face interactions, in both formal (RE lessons) and informal (lunch clubs and activity sessions) settings.
Staff Development
There have been changes to the staff team this year. Barry Mason has taken on a new role with Greater Europe Mission after six years of faithful service. Brigette Whitley has now taken over as Director, working 40% full-time equivalent.
Brigette also continues her role in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), exploring how to integrate her skills and training into Wyre Forest Youth for Christ’s holistic approach to supporting young people. Recently, she completed Trauma-Informed Schools Supervisor training and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) training, both of which will greatly enhance our work with schools.
With thanks…
We are deeply grateful for the time, effort, and commitment of volunteers from local partnering churches, including David Grist and his team at Kidderminster East, Steve Robinson and his team at Riverside, Naomi Bishop and her team at Cleobury Community Hub, Adam Whitley and his team at Kidderminster Elim, and Jason Borlase and his team at Kidderminster Baptist Church.
Structural Development
Maintaining strong governance and accountability is fundamental to our work, and we are grateful for the continued support of our Board of Trustees. Ahead of the AGM, we note the following board members:
-
Chair of Trustees – Rev. Steve Robinson (due to step down after 18 months of leadership)
-
Treasurer – Ian Phillips
-
Secretary – Liam Carroll
-
Trustees – Mike Follett, David Grist, Jane Pollard, Milka Russell
-
Barry Mason has now transitioned from Director to become a trustee.
We also plan to refresh the Council of Reference, aiming to create a ‘think tank’ to consider how God may use Wyre Forest Youth for Christ in the coming months and years. Changes to the Council of Reference are expected in the near future, with new members joining. The current Council includes: Heidy Hague (Local Prayer), Sarah Holmes (Education Inclusion Specialist), Neil O’Boyle (British Youth for Christ Director), Rev. Adam Whitley (Kidderminster Elim), and Pastor Paul Ella (Stourport Baptist), Jason Borlase (Kidderminster Baptist Church)
We want to express our thanks to Simon Harry, who has stepped down from the Council due to his move to Cambridgeshire to lead a church, and to Sam Guille, who has stepped down to focus on his teacher training. While they will be greatly missed, we continue to pray for their exciting new ventures
Finances
Financial sustainability is a priority for us as a charity. As we present our finances below, we recognise that we are wholly reliant on God's provision through His people—whether through regular donations, church partnerships, payments for services, or grant awards.
For the financial year (January–December 2024), our income was £33,324, with expenditures totaling £30,300, leaving us with an operational surplus of £3,025. Funds brought forward from previous years totaled £4,677, resulting in an end of year balance of £7,702 in the bank.
We will continue to maintain the Director's role at 40% full-time equivalent and are confident that our financial practices align with the Charity Commission’s guidelines.
In 2024, we are particularly grateful for the ongoing financial partnerships from individual donors, church missionary donations from Kidderminster Baptist Church, and the continued support of Riverside Bewdley, who provides office space. We have also received significant grants from the John James Trust, The Gladiator Trust, The Benefact Trust, Grace Charitable Trust, and the Norman Whiteley Trust.
Looking Ahead...
Schools Ministry
We continue to see our work with schools as a key avenue for transforming young people’s lives through Jesus. We will prayerfully focus on one school at a time, exploring how we can serve through lessons, assemblies, and chaplaincy support. We also aim to expand our role in offering schools expertise and support following critical incidents.
We remain committed to our participation in the Wellbeing Showcase at Bewdley High School, where in 2025, we aim to distribute Kidderminster Harriers branded New Testaments to all students in Yrs 7-13, inviting them to take a moment to connect with God.
Holy Trinity School has expressed interest in having Wyre Forest Youth for Christ return to their RE lessons, and we have eight lessons scheduled to speak about Jesus.
We are also pleased to have secured funding from Gladiator Trust to enable us to deliver focused mission activities in the schools.
Looking ahead, we continue to explore opportunities to reach out to more schools, meeting prayerfully with one school at a time.
Church Ministry
We will continue to seek feedback from local churches on how we can support their youth programs and the young people they serve. Our regular events in partnership with local churches have proven successful, and we plan to continue these leading up to the next Satellites Summer Camp, where we plan to bring five churches in 2025. We hope to connect with more churches over the rest of 2025.
Final Thoughts
It is a great privilege to present this report of our charitable activity for 2024. Being part of Wyre Forest Youth for Christ is an incredible opportunity, and we are continually inspired as we see young people’s lives transformed by the love of Jesus. Our goal is that every young person in Wyre Forest has the chance to make an informed decision about their faith. We are committed to supporting local churches and being a presence in schools, because as Romans 10:14 reminds us,
“How will they know if no one tells them?”
As a charity, we are well-positioned to continue impacting the lives of young people. We look forward to seeing our current activities expand and develop in both churches and schools. This is an exciting season for Wyre Forest Youth for Christ, and we are already witnessing God’s favour poured out upon the youth in our community. We continue to pray that God’s will be done in Wyre Forest Youth for Christ and in the lives of young people throughout the district.
Brigette

2.2 INCOME
This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.
Recognition of income Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in the SOFA. The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt. In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution. Donated services and facilities Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably. Income from interest, royalties and dividends This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can be measured reliably. Income from membership subscriptions Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations and Legacies. Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as income from charitable activities. These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when: • the charity becomes entitled to the resources; · it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and • the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability. Donated goods Contractual income and performance related grants Offsetting There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102. Grants and donations Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP). This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or services or met the performance related conditions. Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be exchanged) unless impractical to do so. In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP). Legacies Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the charity or have been met. Government grants The charity has received government grants in the reporting period Tax reclaims on donations and gifts Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the terms of the appeal have specified otherwise. Settlement of insurance claims Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other income in the SoFA. Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations when receivable. Support costs The charity has incurred expenditure on support costs. Volunteer help Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading activities'. Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable. The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the trustees’ annual report.

2.4 ASSETS Intangible fixed assets Heritage assets Current asset investments The charity has has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than one year held for investment purposes rather than to meet short term cash commitments as they fall due. Debtors Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received. Stocks and work in progress Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net realisable value. Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value based on the service potential provided by items of stock. Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract. Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage. They are valued at cost. Investments Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment. Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments Grants with performance conditions Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output. Grants payable without performance conditions Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be recognised. The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5 They are valued at cost. The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic, scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4. Liability recognition Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty. The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per paragraph 11.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17 to 11.19, FRS102 SORP. Tangible fixed assets for use by charity The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2. Governance and support costs Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support. Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice. They are valued at cost. These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least Redundancy cost The charity made no redundancy payments during the reporting period. Deferred income No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts. Creditors The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts Provisions for liabilities A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently measured at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the reporting date Basic financial instruments

Note 2 Accounting policies
