## **TRUSTEE REPORT**

## **For the Year Ending 31 December 2020**

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

To promote community participation in healthy recreation by the provision of facilities for noncompetitive and competitive rowing, in particular Cornish Pilot Gigs, for the benefit of the public by the provision of facilities for fixed seat rowing.

## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects**

Since formation and membership of the sport's governing body, the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA), in January 2016, The Club has grown substantially in membership each year until 2020 when Covid-19 impacted on membership.

It is the primary goal of The Club to offer rowing activities to benefit physical and mental health as well as a strong and inclusive community atmosphere for its members. The Club's main activities have remained the same in the year to 31 December 2020 although these have been curtailed due to the impact of the pandemic in comparison to prior years.

The primary activities of The Club in the year to 31 December 2020, and the prior year, were:

- Running rowing sessions for the physical and mental health benefit of members of the club.

- Providing opportunities and training for members to compete in gig rowing races.

- Providing development opportunities to members including training to become a competent cox.

- To grow the club membership and reach a wider section of the London community, to promote physical and mental health.

- Working with and improving partnerships with other rowing and water-based clubs.

- To promote the sport of gig rowing more generally.

- To address the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic and sustain the welfare of its members and the financial position of the club throughout the suspension of rowing activities and to ensure a safe return to rowing following the lockdown.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

To maintain a healthy membership of the club throughout the COVID 19 pandemic and the suspension of rowing activities for most of the year.

- The club conducted a members’ survey which highlighted both positive and negative aspects of the Clubs operations on and off the water. This led to significant work by the committee to address and act upon the feedback from its members. This included a review of the structure of the club governance and committee structure.

- The Club secured Sport England Community Emergency funding to provide essential financial support during the suspension of rowing activities between March and September. The club formed a Return to Rowing group, tasked with managing the welfare and safety of all club members as rowing activities resumed in line with the easing of government Covid restrictions and within guidelines issues by the CPGA and British Rowing. The work of this group and the support of all members to enable a safe return to rowing activity in both Richmond and the Docks should be highly commended.

Trustee Board were fully committed to supporting the Return to Rowing Group and had managed to agree financial arrangements with our members and partners to ensure the club was sustainable throughout the pandemic.

Competitive rowing opportunities were severely curtailed in 2020 due to the pandemic, but the Men’s A crew, coached by Patrick Bird, achieved 14[th] place at the Three Rivers Regatta in Caradon in March 2020.

Our usually busy programme of activities started well with events on 18 January for South East England Gig League (SEEGL) members and on 1 March when we hosted the Stuns’ls Shanty Group who performed at the Clubhouse during their UK tour. All other plans were curtailed by Covid 19 restrictions.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Reserves policy**

The Club has continued to keep a reserve of £1,000 and there has been an agreement to increase this in future as the Club's activities grow. The Club continues to retain 3 months’ rent (£2,250) as an additional reserve to meet this financial commitment, should there be any cashflow issues in the future.

The Club utilised the ringfenced fund of £2,220 from an appeal for funds to buy another gig. This sum was supported by a private donation of £14,000 and £3,402.00 grant received from Richmond Parish Land Charity. The Club’s Trustees authorised a further spend of £8,709 of non-ringfenced funds to complete the purchase of the new gig in March 2020.

## **TRUSTEE REPORT**

## **For the Year Ending 31 December 2020**

The Club secured Sport England Community Emergency funding of £7,500 which covered essential overheads during the Covid-19 lockdown period. This was supported by a further rent-free period for our Clubhouse premises.

The Club implemented a six month freeze on membership fees to cover the period during which rowing was suspended and, through the generosity of a Club member, a hardship fund was established to cover membership renewal fees for NHS and care workers.

## **Plans for the future**

The Club will continue to provide physical and mental health benefits and a strong community atmosphere to its members in both East and West London.

The trustees thank David Callaghan and Greta Kendall who retired as trustees at the December 2020 AGM and Yvonne Baker who retired as treasurer in August 2020 for their hard work on behalf of the Club during their term of office and during a particularly challenging year.

## **DECLARATION**

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.

Signed on behalf of the charity’s trustees.
