The Friends of Bourne Charity

Report of the trustees for the year ending 31[st] March 2023

The trustees of The Friends of Bourne charity present their annual report and audited accounts for the year ended 31[st] March 2023 and confirm they comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011, the trust deed and the Charities SORP (FRS102)

OUR AIMS

Bourne Community College aims to provide a first class education to boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16. We seek to provide a structured educational environment that develops our student’s capabilities, competences and skills. We promote the academic, moral and physical development of our students through our academic curriculum, pastoral care, sporting and other activities. We provide an educational environment where each student can develop and fulfil their potential, building their self-confidence and implant a desire to contribute to the wider community. We prepare our students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of later life.

The Friends of Bourne aims to support Bourne Community College, by raising much needed funds for curriculum area projects to aid the learning, mental health and equipment for all students in the school.

OUR OBJECTIVES

To advance the education of pupils at Bourne Community College by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education at the college.

We include environment, mental health and equipment within our objective, and look to aid Bourne Community College by raising funds in these areas as well departmental projects.

Our key objectives for the year included:

  1. To increase the number of students attending / working in STEM.

  2. To continue the success of the Green Car project.

  3. To improve learning for students with additional needs.

  4. To increase provisions and equipment for curriculum areas who are in need to further broaden their curriculum and engage their students.

REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVMENTS

Disadvantaged Children

We have continued to use the funds donated last year by an anonymous donor. As well as this, we have also received a further £15,000 donation from the same donor to continue the work we have done to date. These funds have been spent on assisting the cost of specialist eye wear for a student, which has greatly improved their learning. We have also funded another term of counselling sessions for students who need extra help through talk therapy. We also continued to spend a donation given to our Pupil Premium students, and have supplied shirts, trousers, shoe, socks and tights.

Whole School

At the end of each term, we have been able to award vouchers to students in years 7 – 11 who have excelled in their learning and attendance. This has had a positive impact on their self-confidence and student’s attendance. It has boosted their wellbeing and morale after two years of rained schooling due to COVID.

We have also been donated various consumables such as biscuits to give as class prizes for best attendance and bottled water for foreign trips.

PTA

This year we have merged The Friends of Bourne and the Bourne Community College PTA. We have had income from second hand uniform sales as well as hosting a quiz night. We look forward to future events.

Curriculum Area Achievements:

Special Educatonal Needs

We have continued raising funds to create a sensory garden which will be used by students who have more complex needs. This is an ongoing project for which we are still raising funds. The funds currently donated are being held in the account until the full sum needed has been raised.

STEM

We continue to have numerous donations specifically targeted to our school GreenCar project.

This is an electric car which students build and race and contributes to team development and sustainability.

We have a specific donor who generously funds this particular project.

Some of this specified donation went towards purchasing 5 laptops for our STEM/ Engineering areas to aid the students in their work.

FUTURE PLANS

The Friends of Bourne intend to continue raising funds for the school.

We will continue to support our disadvantaged families using the remaining funds donated. Families in receipt of this are carefully selected with the help of Bourne Community College’s Family Link Support worker.

We would like to continue in the support of the whole school achievements vouchers to celebrate the achievements of the students who are continually doing their very best.

We will continue to support the Maths department with their subscription to Maths Watch to aid in the teaching of maths to students at Bourne Community College.

Maintenance and continuation of the Think outside Project, as and where necessary.

OUR FINANCES

The financial statement shows that we have had an overall income £27,406.94 which is increased by 144% on last year. This is largely due to the family’s donation and green car project donations, but has also been helped by the merger of the PTA with The Friends of Bourne Charity, as well as coming through the other side of the Covid pandemic. Our expenditure for the year is £12976.91 which is a decrease of 2.39% on last year, giving an overall positive balance of £14430.03 for 2022/2023 period.

The main source of income has been from an individual donor who has contributed 54% of the funds raised this year.

As a charity working with Bourne Community College, we would like to ensure all our parents that the income raised through The Friends of Bourne is used for educational purposes to aid the learning of their children within the school. However 1.90% of the overall expenditure for 2022/2023 was used for account maintenance including maintenance of the website, monthly account fees, licenses, account auditing and day to day essentials including stationary.

No trustees are employed by the charity and all work is provided voluntarily. No expenses have been submitted by volunteers or trustees in the financial year 2022/2023.

Reserves and Financial Health

The finances are regularly reviewed by the trustees of The Friends of Bourne, and a half termly report is sent by the treasurer. The report shows which projects are still awaiting funds, what has been spent and where.

The charity maintains its reserve of £1000.00 as per the governing document and financial policy.

The current account balance is in excess of £38,000 with funds donated to specific projects and departments.
