## **Pop-up shop a great success** 

During National Volunteers’ Week, Thornbury Volunteer Centre ran a successful pop-up shop in the skittle alley of the Swan Inn. It raised just over £2000 for our funds through the fourweek opening run and will help us to continue our work for the foreseeable future. 

What was gently derided by friends and visitors as a jumble sale in a skittle alley was much more than that. Few jumble sales had the huge range and extent of items that had been donated by family and friends over the past two years when no pop-up shop was possible.

It was lovely to welcome back visitors from previous years and meet new ones. We hope you enjoyed us being there as much as we did.

## **Thornbury Volunteer Centre is run by a team of volunteers and a part time employee with the aim of promoting all aspects of voluntary work in Thornbury and its district. A registered charity, we fulfil the Charity Commission’s aim of ensuring that all charities are of benefit to the public and the communities which they serve.** 

## **The Accounts** 

Copies of our annual accounts are available on request. The Centre’s reserves policy is to maintain its reserves at such a level as to ensure that as at the 1 April each year sufficient funds are available to maintain at least two years’ activity broadly at the level of 2020-2021, thereby enabling, if necessary, an orderly winding up of the charity to be achieved. In setting the level of reserves the costs of any statutory redundancy payments or other legal payments for which the Centre might be liable will be taken into account. 

## **Volunteer Co-ordinators** 

When the Centre re-opens on Monday 6 September it will once again operate with a team of volunteer co-ordinators who will attend the office daily on a rota. The co-ordinators are the backbone of the Centre and donate their time on a regular basis. So, to all past and current volunteers we offer our grateful thanks. 

## **Trustees** 

This year we have welcomed two new volunteers to our board, Cllr Shirley Holloway and Sam Fisher. Their ideas and expertise will be of great benefit in the coming years. The trustees ensure that we operate within the guidelines set by our Constitution, the Charity Commission and NCVO. 

## **The Centre** 

The office has been operating virtually since March 2020 but will re-open to the public fully on Monday 6 September. We have a large database of current volunteering opportunities, both locally, regionally and nationally. 

## **Paid Workers** 

Kim Webb is our paid employee working 15 hours a week, funded in part by South Glos Council. Kim has been working mainly from home throughout the recent pandemic and has volunteered many additional hours taking full responsibility for all the work of the Centre. 

## **Internet and Social Media** 

Michael Quinion, our long-standing IT Manager, has been invaluable in helping to keep the Centre operational since the first lockdown in March 2020. He ensures that our user-friendly and accessible website continues to raise our profile and that of volunteering in general with all our news and events being posted. It links directly to the Do-it national volunteering database https://doit.life/ and volunteers and organisations are able to register with us online. Our social media accounts help to keep us in touch with all members of the community. 

## **Publicity** 

We enjoy a good relationship with the local media, with ongoing articles appearing in The Gazette, Thornbury Voice, local Community Magazines, local websites and e-bulletins.

This in-demand booklet has been produced for people living in and around Thornbury and offers guidance for people in need of sources of practical and expert help in cases of specific need. 

This is the ninth edition of the booklet and is bigger than ever with more than 300 listings of statutory organisations, community interest companies and charities. We have thrown our net wide, adding contact details for national organisations to provide assistance where it isn't available locally. 

Copies of the booklet are available from our offices at Thornbury Town Hall. Alternatively, it can be downloaded in PDF format from our website at volunteerthornbury.co.uk/bklt . You can also search the text online at volunteer-thornbury.co.uk/soh . This version will be kept up to date with changes as they are reported to us.

We have been chosen as the charity for the month of October. Please join us any Wednesday that month at 8.30pm to enjoy a fun quiz with your friends whilst helping to raise funds for the Volunteer Centre. 

It's just £1 to enter and there are teams of a maximum of five. If you only have one or two of you then don't worry, we can help you make up a team.

## **Volunteer Managers’ Network Meetings** 

**These meetings are open to all volunteer managers working in South Gloucestershire. They are friendly and informal gatherings where managers can share ideas and expertise and discuss any issues or concerns. Normally held in person our next will be held via Zoom on** 

**Thursday 23 September 2021 at 10am** 

**There is no specific topic as yet but this meeting will give everyone a chance to share their organisation’s experiences throughout this period. If you have a particular topic you would like to raise then please email - your suggestions to Kim Webb at mail@volunteer thornbury.co.uk** 

**We are hoping to resume face to face meetings as soon as possible.** 

## **Looking forward to 2021/22** 

## **Castle in the Community Student volunteering scheme** 

For the past 7 years the Volunteer Centre has hosted a volunteering scheme with the Castle School Sixth Form. Obviously last year was the exception although we did still manage to run project based and one-off volunteering with the students. 

The scheme encourages year 13 pupils into volunteering as part of their Extended Curriculum and helps students volunteer in their local community for two hours, once a week, during term time. 

Students are placed within different community organisations in the Thornbury and district area, and carry out a wide variety of tasks. The benefits to students and organisations are immense. The students gain valuable work experience and life skills and the organisations increase capacity and gain additional volunteer help. We are in the process of putting together next year’s programme which starts in September and would love to hear from any voluntary or community organisations who feel they would like to take - part and offer a student(s) a placement. ## **The Alan Hudson Award** 

The Alan Hudson Award for Volunteering Achievement is awarded annually and celebrates the work of an individual or group who in the opinion of the Thornbury Volunteer Centre has made a valuable contribution to the local community. Our 2019 winner was Krunch South West. We are hoping to present this year’s winner at our Christmas Lunch in December. 

## **Volunteers’ Christmas Lunch** 

This year we are hoping to once again host our Volunteers Christmas Lunch. This is our chance to recognise and thank the many volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations from within our local community.  Keep a look out on our website for further details.

**A RETROSPECTIVE OF 2020-21 – A VERY UNUSUAL YEAR** No one could have imagined at the start of 2020 what the future would hold but it’s fair to say that it has been a year like no other and one we hopefully never have to live through again. 

Thornbury Volunteer Centre, like so many small grassroots organisations had to adapt to a different way of working whilst still maintaining and increasing their capacity to offer their services. Not since the 1940’s had volunteering been so important or vital in helping local communities to survive and support their vulnerable people. The Volunteer Centre Development co-ordinator worked from home and with the help of Michael Quinion, the Centre IT manager, managed to continue to recruit and signpost volunteers to where they were most needed whilst at the same time help those other voluntary organisations find new volunteers to enable them to adapt and survive. We made connections with local Mutual Aid groups and statutory bodies and formed partnerships with other voluntary groups in an effort to ensure that the right people Fascinating figures! were reaching the right places. Last year Thornbury Volunteer Centre registered In the first 3 months of lockdown alone we registered and referred 77 volunteers to 206 new volunteers, a 23% NHS, City and local councils, mutual aid groups and local organisations. ## **Help us to continue our work** 

We are a charity, staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Like most charities, we are in need of funds to support our work, particularly as we exist to help other local charities find and make good use of volunteers in their own activities. It is now easier to support us. 


The AmazonSmile scheme supports charitable organisations by donating a proportion of the value of sales. Everyone who buys from Amazon and wants to support us can join the scheme. 

All you have to do is visit the sign-up page, you will be asked to log in to the Amazon site if you aren’t already. Then all you have to do is click on the button labelled _Start Shopping_ . After that you can shop the Amazon site as normal. Products, prices and shopping features are exactly the same as before but part of the value of your purchases (excluding VAT, returns and delivery) is passed to us as a donation. Amazon doesn’t take any commission.

## **Mucking out is fun to do!** 


When Mick retired last year from his job working on a network of cross-country petroleum pipelines, he soon sorted out all those ‘saved-up’ jobs around the house and garden and started looking for something to do. 

He was already familiar with volunteer work: he had helped at his daughters’ schools and had been a parent governor. So volunteering was his first thought. He has always been fond of animals and after reading a small ad in _Thornbury Voice_ asking for volunteers to help at the Rudgeway Donkey Sanctuary, he contacted us for advice. 

He started at the Sanctuary in January 2021 and immediately found it was just what he wanted. He volunteers every day for about two hours, starting at 7:30 in the morning. This suits him because he’s normally back home by 9:30 with a full day ahead free. 

Mick with one of the friendly donkeys. 

His main activity is to help other volunteers get the stables ready for the day ahead. This usually starts with ‘mucking-out’, which wouldn’t be everyone’s favourite job. He actually quite likes it as it helps keep him fit: “It’s a great way to start my day! The only downside I can think of is that every day my wife straightaway tells me to get changed and have a shower as not everyone likes the smell of donkey stables!” 

Always ready to help out wherever needed, Mick has done some DIY and office jobs, including updating Health and Safety risk assessments. Jean, the Sanctuary owner, has found him to be a godsend because she hates doing paperwork. 

Mick is very happy with his role: ‘I find that volunteering at the Sanctuary is very rewarding, especially when working with the donkeys, some of which may not have had the best start in life. The atmosphere is friendly, the donkeys are affectionate, everyone is made very welcome, and I feel my time there is valued.’ 



**WE ARE RE-OPENING TO THE PUBLIC ON MONDAY 6 SEPTEMBER AT 10.30AM.** Normal office hours are: Monday-Friday 10.30am-12 noon. No appointment necessary.

## _**CURRENT VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES**_ 

**Youth Music Trustee:** A local youth music charity seeks new trustees. The charity provides high-quality music tuition and activities for children aged 4-18 and offers the chance to play in small and large ensembles. No music background required. Trustee board meetings take place around 8-10 times per year. 

**IT Support:** If you're proficient in IT you could help with forthcoming projects for a local charity which supports children with additional needs and disabilities. This could include website design or updating if you are able to help with this. You could work from home or the charity office. 

**Administrator:** a local children’s charity is looking for volunteers to help with administration at their offices in Thornbury. Duties could include filing, photocopying, data entry, updating records, mailing lists, answering phone calls etc. 

**School Governors:** Several local primary school need people to serve on their governing bodies. You need not have a background in education, but you will be interested and committed to helping the schools function effectively and smoothly. 

**Telephone Befrienders:** working from home, calling older or disabled people for a friendly chat once a week. 

**Secretary to board of Trustees:** Local children's charity is looking for enthusiastic individual to organise trustee meetings/documents, and take minutes. Particularly interested in hearing from people who have faced barriers gaining experience, getting into work, or career progression. This is not a trustee role. 

**Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) Online Activity Support Volunteer:** Local charity supporting older people seeks volunteers to help with their new therapy service for people living with mild or moderate dementia. You will support trained staff to undertake planned activities over Zoom. Examples include discussions, word games, quizzes, and physical, creative and musical activities. 

**Trustees:** Several charities are seeking board members with expertise in a variety of fields: finance, HR, business etc. Meetings usually 6 times a year. 

**Carers Break volunteer:** Are you kind, compassionate, reliable and caring? Carers looking after a family member or friend need the regular breaks you can give them by spending 2-3 hours a week or fortnight with the person cared for. No personal care or manual handling is involved. Full training given. 

**Primary Tour Guide:** Child safety guides lead groups of 3-4 Year 6 children on tours through an exciting, interactive experience. With script and special effects, you’ll encourage children to spot hazardous situations in everyday scenarios. Based in Hotwells Road, Bristol. 

**Dementia Mentors:** Volunteers with lived experience of caring for someone with dementia are needed to offer 1-to-1 support to new or struggling carers through fortnightly 30-minute mentoring sessions via telephone, Zoom or email. Full training and comprehensive support given. 

**Tutors:** to spend 1 hour a week online to help students with their GCSE or A level studies.

## _**CURRENT VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES**_ 

**parkrun volunteers:** Saturday mornings between 8.15am-10am; marshalls, tail walkers, timekeepers and event directors. 

**Mentors:** needed by a local charity to help young Thornbury residents believe in themselves, make positive choices and raise their aspirations. The charity works with young people with emotional, social and behavioural issues, offering them an adult friend to help them through tricky times. Training starts September 2021. 

**Retail Assistants** : Several local charity shops are looking for volunteers to operate the till, serve customers, receive donations, sort and display goods. 

**Supported Woodland Management** : Volunteer woodland management days at a local arboretum provide a supportive and friendly environment for people who are experiencing mental health struggles. They can take part in restoration work, meet others, learn, and develop new skills. Volunteers should be physically able to spend a day outside doing practical tasks. 

**Befrienders:** Volunteers are needed in South Gloucestershire to visit older people who are living on their own and need companionship and possibly some simple errands run. Volunteers will visit in their own time on a regular basis and form an ongoing relationship. Full training and support given. Just 1 hour pw. 

**Refreshment Server:** to cover a morning or an afternoon shift on a regular basis, making teas and coffees and having a chat to the customers at local tearoom. 

**Play Helper:** You will play with pre-school or home-schooled children with additional support needs whilst parents chat and support each other. You will make light refreshments, help with craft activities, play with children and talk to parents. Experience of working with young children preferred but not essential. 

**Advice Support volunteer:** You will assist clients with welfare benefit applications at weekly appointments. You will help with form filling, act as an advocate, follow up clients, keep accurate records. Full training given. Must have good IT skills & some knowledge of databases. Can volunteer from offices in Lockleaze or from home. 

**Conservation:** a variety of differing roles including; breeding assistant for wild birds, compost site maintenance, wildlife cataloguer, orchard maintenance. 

**Community Ambassadors:** A national children's charity is recruiting community ambassadors to help raise awareness of their vital work. A large part is carrying out research into community groups, schools and businesses in the area so that volunteers can contact them to offer their services as a speaker. 

**Fundraisers:** Several local charities are seeking fundraisers. Various tasks including: writing funding applications, communicating with local businesses and organisations to generate funds, liaising with supporters and organising funding events.

Income
All income is recognised in Ihe Statement of Financial Activities On￿ the charity has enlillemenl lo the
funds, il is probable that the income will be re￿IVed and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as s(K)n as there is a legal or conslruclive obligation
committing the charity to that expenditure, il is probable Ihal a transfer of economic benefits will be
required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably Expenditure is
accounted for on an accruals basis and has been Glassified ur5der headings that aggregate all cost
related lo the category. Where costs cannot be direclly attributed to particular headings they have been
allocated lo activities on a basis consislenl with the use of resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from coiwration tax on ils charitable activities.
Fund accountlng
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordan￿ with Ihe charitable obiectives at the discretion of the
trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular resliicted purposes within the objects of the charity.
Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted
purpose5.

Pension costs and other post.retlrement beneflts
The charitable company operates a defined conlribulion pension scheme. Contributions payable lo the
charitable cornpany's ￿nS{fIn scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period
