Thè University of the Third Age in Carnbridgg IU3ACI looked forward in 2024 to buSlding on the
prèwous years ￿rfOrn￿nce in t8rns of increasing our rnemb8rship numbers to be doser to the
'pre40￿d years,. The upward trend of the previous year continued and by the oryj of the year the
membership numbèr totalled 2.554. This growth was attributsble to a numb8r of factors but, as in
2023, notably, to a much more proactive approach to marketing and pu￿1c1ty.
Given th8 focus on increasing membetship, Counul nevertheless took the difficult but unavThdable
decision to increase the subscnption again to £110 for the 202425 academic year. D8SPite 50rnè
expects*"ons to ihe contrary. thi5 inciea58 in subs¢riptK)n did not reduce the amount received from
voluntary donations . in fact quite the opposite. Such t*)nations are very much appreciated and
also add to the sum on which we can daim Gift Aid. tt 15 a positfvo measwe of how hvJhly our
memb&rs value their membership of U3AC and the v8riOU5 benefits it provides.
As ever. we Iso ¢onsid8r8d furth8r andloi continued othar income4enerating options and were
eased with th8 Outcome of letting Bridge Stroet preriiise5 to a language school during the
JulylAugUSt period. This was particularty successful in 2024 and had the additional benefit ol
providing moro flexibilty for stsff working and taking 5thnè holiday ovor that perifxl. To provkle
sorne alternative continuity of acti￿l￿.es for rnembers there was 8 goDd prOgraMr￿ of off4ite
Summer acts"vth"es organis8d wth the help of volunts8r5, which was popular and is likely to set
pattern for futurè summer programmes.
Members continued to bènefit from a good, range ol courses anol acti*it￿5 in 20241391 atth8
me of allocation, up from 375 in 20231, offeriw an Inc￿aSed number of plac8s17,598 cf. 7,268 in
20231. Course delivery continued to be face-to-face, by Zoom or In a hybrid format. r8flecting a5 far
as po$sib1e th¢ prgt8rences of tutors and thtr axpectations of members. Tha Courses Comrnitt88
continued actively to encourage new tutor5 to offer their to prO￿lde support for all
tutors through Tutor Forums, the mentoring $eNi¢&. ete.. As wdl as analysing men*gr
feedback on courses and the high-18vel data it accèssaé during the year. Some mernbers are
inevilably disappointed when the cours8 they p8rticularfy want 15 oversubscribe£l. but al the initsal
allwAts'on 96.8% of members secured their first choiee.
U3AC's trjo lectu￿ senes once again offered rnembets a dlsb'ngui$hed roster ol speakers an¢J a
rich variety of subjects. Meml)ers could choose to attend the W8dn&sday l¢¢tures in person or
Zoom, but at the moment the Norah BO￿ lectures are usually Zccrn. The incrtasing number of
lactures posted on the website provides an exceptional archive for mambfrrs to enjoy at thglr
18isure. We apweciate that the U￿c is very fortunato to be able to invite such a Gcnsistently wde
range of local expert speakers a￿ bmlliro to gNe their time to expand ￿ kn￿￿e¢39e and
188ming opportunitie5 of our membèrs.
The fomiat for the Ron Gray Conf8rencè was Changed from p￿V￿)uS years. It was an alklay
meety'ng and was held at Ernrnanuel College, Whe￿ Ron Gray was a fellow. as well as bein9
U3AC lecturer. We were very lucky io have Piofès50r Bill Randall. Emeritus Professor ol
Gerontology, from St Thomas University, Canada, join u5 while he was a visrting fellow at
Emmanuel College. Bill put together 8 day of talk5 and workshops Dn the subject of natrative
gerontology. titled 'Ageing as Adventure., Rairnagining Later Life,. Wa had good attendance. and
our member5 We￿ treated to 8 series ol lectures and work8hcp5 given by ￿rturerS from the UK,
Canada, USA and Norway.

As part of our regular bu1￿1r@ rnaintenance prcgramma, wa wore informed in October109.30 am
Thursday moming, 17th October) that there was an outbreak of Leg￿￿ella in the water system el
the gndge Street premises. The Chair of the Trustees, in con8ultstion with the Secr8tsry and thè
TreaSU￿r. look the Immediate deusion to close the premises until further notice, which Meant no
f&e-to-face Classes could continue the￿. The Chair Immediately informed all U3AC members of
the $ituats"on. As this element of the building infra$tru¢lure is the prime responsibility of the
Landlord, Magdalene C￿lege. thrO￿h its Agent Icheffinsl. several meebngs took place with the
Agent, and a numbèr of measur6s were put In pla¢e lo rectify siluats"on. These indud*l..
treatrnent of the wat&T, rtgular flushing of the system. temperatu￿ ¢he¢k$.' replacing old and ill.
structured pipework., investh"gating the 5tsto of tho tsnks. along wrth several other general checks..
and establishing a rnore regular t8Sting regime of the 5ySteFn for the future. The premises we
closed for a total of three weeks. and re-opened, following an Erner9ency Counul Meeting, on
Wednesday, 6th November. 2024, at 9.30 am. During the elosure, many cla$$as wora undèrtaken
onjine or in altemativa premises, sometimes a￿anged by lh8 da$s M￿nbe[S themselv89. Th6
Trustees are most grateftjl to the staff. tLrtors and 311 the other voluriteers, who wothed so hard to
keep the classes going and to gnsure tho prernises could b8 made available agaiTI as soon as
possiblo. ThroughouL members were updated regularfy by the Chair who received several
apprecith.ve messages ol support In response. It was an important leaming exp&r￿n¢$ which
tèsted our ability and systems to keep the business going during this loss of premise$. We continue
to revw thi5 emergency Incident. and, on the whole. have ¢oncluded that the .10$$ of business.
was minimised, bec8use 5tsff. Trustees and voluntsers all moved into action and followed the
rel8vanl procadure5. However. there is no room lor compLgcenty about such unexpected and
serious situats'on5, and a small Working Group h85 been established under the Mte-chair of Ihe
Council lo examine, with the Agents. Cheffins, the main lessons to be learned.

could not function. There ar8 many way5 in which mernbers can and do voluntoor as tutors, group

The lease of our Br￿ge Street premises has been under ¢onsi<lerath"on by a nominated gTOUP of
Trusteas. and negotiations for a significant extension to U3AC's 18ase of the ￿rrent Bri¢ge Street
premises are currenly wdl on track. While not yet sKJn8d at the twne ol writing this report. we are
encouraged by the fact that our landlord. Magdalene Colle9e, has expressed a positi.ve desire to
conts.nue with us as tenants. Therg is, however, a potsntial for some disruption ov8r th• summor
month5 of 2025 while exlen$Ne work is undertaken to put an end to the leak5 through the rDof and
terrace a￿as. alth¢)ugh we hope that this will be accomplished during our summ8r r8c8S5. Because
Magdalene Collogo is offaring the possit)ility of a new 1(kyear lèase. with a >year break-point
clause, the Chair of ihe Counul has set up a Vvorking Group to develop 0 10-Year Strategic Pl

Organisation governed by a Constitution regislered on 20th November 2018 and recognised as a
Charity by the Charity Commissh)n for England and Wales in accordance with the proMsion5 of thè
Chari*es Act 2011.

U3AC is managed by its Trustees, who form Councl, and supervised by its Officers. who are
appointed by Council from among51 its members. Members of the Council are elected by the Annual
General Meeting for a PÈFiod ol thrè8 yè8rs, after which time thèy are 21￿ible for election for a
further pgriod of three years. The Chair is eleetèd by the Annual Gonèral Meeting for one term of
three years. ln the 8venl Of a vacancy. Counal may e￿opt a Tnjstaè until tho next Annual General
Meeting. The maximum number of Counal rnember5 15 15. Oay-to-day operations a￿ managed by
one lulklime ern￿oYee and three part-tirne ernployees lone of whom transferred to a permanent
contract when their one-ye8r fixed-lerm Contrad ended on 6 D￿ember 20231, together with
freelance professional bookkeeper.
The Annual General Meeting for 2023-2024 took placè on 27 March 2024 the Mccrum Lecture
Theatre. Corpu5 Christi Gollege. Carnbr￿ge. Attendancè exc88ded thè required quorum of
rnernbers. Four nominations were received for new Trusteès, and ￿th fivé vacancies at the AGM,
all norninees were duly elected. In 2024, there were two additional Trustee rèsignations, and one
new Trustee was c¢xJpled in Decernber 2024.
