LOVEPORTSMOUTH
JESUS
CHRISTIAN EVANGELISTIC GRANTS

## Mission Statement

**Love Portsmouth-Jesus** funds Christian initiatives in and around Portsmouth, helping the Church to communicate the love of God.

## **About Us**

Love Portsmouth-Jesus is an independent Christian grant making charity, formed to specifically focus on Christian outreach projects in the Portsmouth area in 2019. A team of three trustees and an administrator began the charity. Following several pilot projects the charity commenced issuing grants in April 2019.

In April 2023 the trustees looked for a new cohort to take the charity forwards and three new trustees were appointed in June 2023. There was a delay in transferring the funds of the charity to the care of the new trustees but once a new bank account was established new grants were then issued.

The Charity’s values are based on Scripture and can be summed up through the following Christian virtues:

**Faithfulness** : We believe in operating the charity with integrity and fairness to all those applying for grants, across all Christian denominations and movements. We want to be faithful to God and honour all those who have donated in ensuring the funds are used entirely in line with the vision. We will honour all parties whose applications are not approved, providing honest feedback and, if appropriate, help on any future requests.

**Hope** : We believe the gospel of Jesus Christ offers all people the certainty of salvation and that Jesus is the hope of all the world. Our hope is that the charity can provide funding that will encourage greater unity across the churches, as Christians work together in the city of Portsmouth to help those in need.

**Love** : We have compassion for all people groups, especially those in need. Our heart is to serve the church and the local community, releasing funds to enable the love of Christ to be shared and known in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

The three requirements for us to accept a request of funding are:

- 25% of funding already established

- Christians from different churches working together

- Demonstrably sharing the gospel

**Grants Made in the Year 2024 to 2025.**

## **High Tide Summer Residential 2024 - £1,000**

Fifty local High Tide teenagers, aged 11-18, from churches all around Portsmouth spent five days together in August 2024 in the Oxfordshire countryside enjoying kayaking, fencing, archery, sport, water slides, crafts, late-night games in the dark and most importantly, time in prayer, worship and deepening relationships with God.

"Since the summer, we've had young people baptised after encountering Jesus for the first time during the week, watched young people deepen their faith and friendship with others their age who are also Christian and all in all, the week stands with a Gospel legacy of young people coming to know Jesus." says Olivia of the High Tide team.

## **Spirit in Sport core costs - £5,000**

Spirit in Sport is a local, sports based evangelistic charity. 50% of what was applied for was given towards the cost of employing a full-time staff member to facilitate the continuing ministry of Spirit in Sport, including: 1. Actively seeking missions that partner with churches across the city, 2. Running all-day holiday sports camps, 3. Running seven fully subscribed weekly Sports Mission sessions in schools, with Home Educated children, and through our Girls Football Club, 4. Partnering with UOP to attract volunteers (many of whom do not know Christ yet), 5. Growing the reach of our weekly Community Table Tennis Café, 6. Offering our Community Sports Leaders Award to more young leaders, 7. Continuing our weekly Men’s Football League, 8. Hosting an annual Men’s Walking Weekend.

## **One Body Portsmouth Co-ordinator - £11,000**

A grant was made towards two years of funding for the One Body Portsmouth Co-ordinator role, starting from January 2025, when the previous LP-J grant ran out. Since January 2025, as well as growing relationships and unity between churches in the city, this role has helped the development of a Portsmouth City Mission to reach out to children in junior schools, starting a Church Impact Portsmouth project to map social action across all churches in the city, supporting the now annual Lord Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and supporting a united church outreach event, Festival of Hope, looking to be run near Pentecost 2026. United leaders’ meetings have also had more focus on outreach this year including inviting Phil Knox, from the Evangelical Alliance to share about how churches can reach out in today’s culture.

## **Third Portsmouth Prayer Breakfast - £1,170**

The third City Prayer Breakfast, hosted by the Lord Mayor on 21[st] March 2025, brought leaders of the council, key figures in the city and those of various faiths together around the name and principles of Jesus of Nazareth to pray for Portsmouth. Prof. David Bacon spoke

brilliantly and accessibly about the ever-expanding realms of the universe and how science and faith overlap to work together.

One miraculous answer to prayers from the breakfast was that a man who was in hospital in excruciating pain with a slipped lumbar disc, was discharged two days after the Prayer Breakfast with a walking stick, and able to travel as scheduled. He ministers and works with youth projects in Central America. This was an amazing turnaround!

## **Glorious Dinners - £4,400**

"Glorious Dinner" outreach meals were held on 5[th] June, 2[nd] October 2024 and 4[th] June 2025 at the Portsmouth Village Hotel.

Each event has proved to be exceptionally effective for those people who invited their nonChristian family members or friends to hear a clear presentation of the good news of Jesus. Over 150 people attended each dinner, half of whom were guests and many of whom responded to the gospel message. For 2024 our guest speaker was evangelist Mark Ritchie, a member of J John's associates about whom he says, “Mark Ritchie is outstanding, unique and wonderful. He is insightful and inspiring. He has both wit and wisdom. I always have a faith-lift when I listen to him.”

One testimony from an attendee: “What a difference a day makes! After attending the Glorious Dinner last night, I feel so uplifted and full of hope. I slept so well — even had some wild dreams! Most importantly, I prayed the prayer of salvation. I was so inspired that I picked up one of the free books and, as soon as I got home, I pulled out my Bible, ready to dive in. Being part of the evening was such a joy, and my friend felt exactly the same — she had a great night’s sleep and said she felt amazing too. It was a truly beautiful evening.”

## **Financial Report**

The funds held by the charity continue to be used for the purpose designed by the original trustees. In this year a total of £22,570 was paid out in grants as detailed above. Other expenditure was £299 on admin and consultancy and £60 in bank charges with CAF Bank who hold the funds in a cash and a saver account. The only income for the charity was interest accrued by these accounts which amounted to £1,736. The Cash funds held at the end of this year consist of a total of £58,256. The accounts have been submitted to the Charity Commission with this report.

## **Methods of Donating to the Charity**

Whilst handling the Grant giving side of LP-J we seek to also spread the word and raise donations for the grant making work to continue. We have advice on how to donate on our website and a new information leaflet produced in late 2024. Giving can happen by:

- One-off Giving in person or our Just Giving Page

- Regular Giving by Standing Order

- Via contributions given through Wills

## **Trustees for 2024/25**

We are immensely grateful for the work of the former trustees in setting up and managing this important foundation. Their work established the funds that are now available for the charity to disburse. The new trustees receive the grant applications from the charity administrator and then work together to decide on the success and level remuneration of each grant application.

Current Trustees : Neil Smart, Stephen Dawson, Chris Cox
