Chair’s report
In January we held a Chilly Challenge weekend at Gradbach attended by 140 people camping out in the cold.
A dozen or so Scouts stayed on through Sunday to take part in the selection process for the chance to attend the International Jamboree in Korea. I was glad not to be one of those choosing between the enthusiastic and keen participants but somehow 5 were chosen. They have since taken on a mammoth fundraising task using all kinds of creative methods from cake selling to abseiling to meet the daunting target needed for the trip. Along the way they’re developing important life skills that will stand them in good stead in adult life.
Our very own Wallaboree happened again after a two-year break. It was a real celebration of our emergence from the difficulties of the previous two years as we all got together again. The rain of the first night gave way to a bright weekend and once again Gradbach rang with the sound of hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers discovering new challenges and reliving old ones. It was a very special weekend. My personal thanks went to Paul Read and Debbie who arranged an offroad wheelchair so I was able to get close up to the activities and mingle with the others enjoying the weekend before passing it on to someone else to use.
We still face some challenges. The most pressing need is to get our training back up to the standard needed. Many of our volunteers are short of some of the qualifications they need to keep everyone safe and meet our obligations. Paul Pitts and all the Training Advisors are working extra hard to support everyone to get back up to speed.
There are some key positions that need to be filled. Hopefully the increased activity and Wallaboree will attract new enthusiasm for our cause. Now that we’re meeting

up more regularly it’s easier to build teams and tackle things together and I hope this approach will make some of the gaps less daunting to fill and make for a more resilient District in the long run.
Everything we achieve is thanks to so many of you giving your time freely to make it all possible. We couldn’t do it without you and it’s much appreciated. As I get to know you all better it’s clear we have a strong committed team at High Peak. We have some way to go but by pulling together we can build on our strengths and move forward. It’s been encouraging to see some great people coming through the Appointments Committee to take on new roles in the District. I’m sure they will contribute to a positive future. If anyone would like to join our team, or offer help in any way we’d love to hear from you.
We did have the very sad loss of Sue West, GSL at 14[th] Buxton who died after a long battle with cancer. We were proud to present a Scouts’ guard of honour at her funeral, a small gesture of thanks to someone who gave so much to the District.
I do think we need Scouting more than ever now. When I hear media coverage of young people it’s generally negative. They’re snowflakes, they sit in front of a screen all day, they have no staying power, no work ethic, no concentration span. When I see the young people in our District that’s simply not the reality I see.
I saw over a hundred Scouts taking on the weather at Chilly Challenge when they could have been sitting at home. I saw the Jamboree hopefuls getting stuck in to a set of very different tasks. One group described their expectations of the Jamboree by drawing a picture of the world with people of all colours and origins coming together to share this huge opportunity. It was truly inspiring. I think if they’re given the chance to make their vision a reality then our future’s in pretty good hands. And all of you as volunteers are giving them that chance. Thank you.

Treasurer’s Report
We have had a very busy year starting with the Fundraising of the Jamboree Team. They have raised an incredible £12,000 this year towards their target of £18,604. They have organised coffee mornings, quiz nights, plant and jewellery sales, bridge abseils plus many more activities. Well done and keep up the good work.
The weekend of the 8th – 10th May saw the return of the District Wallaboree Camp. 360 young people plus over 100 Leaders, Adult helpers and Activity providers descended on Gradbach Campsite for a busy weekend of activities and lots of fun. The camp’s income was £12,240 which included a very generous £1,000 grant from Derbyshire County Council. The Expenditure came to £9,902.39. This leaves a £2,337.61 balance to carry forward to the next District camp.
The District Membership numbers of young people was 448. The annual fees were £42.25 per young person so the total paid to the County was £18,928. The total District levy was £672 (£1.50 per young person).
The Total Cash Funds for the District at the end of the year was £33,968.22. Please see the following Receipts and Payments Accounts plus the Summary of Cash Balances.

Another year has passed by very quickly and I am pleased to report that after an 18month hiatus due to the COVID pandemic the campsite saw a return to normality that was welcome for all our site staff and customers.
In 2022, both indoor and camping numbers were back to pre-pandemic levels and it was especially pleasing to see the return of the week-long Scout Summer Camps and at the 3rd attempt, the 40th Border Hike.
The site continues to see improvements both indoors and outdoors, alongside the often unseen, relentless maintenance that is required to keep up with the required standards and safety aspects.
All this is led by our Camp Warden, Mark Rushworth, ably assisted by a loyal and dedicated Service Crew, numerous volunteers and the Duty Wardens. Also, we shouldn’t forget the Camp Committee who continue to help steer everything in the right direction, making decisions on major developments through to which types of chocolate bars to stock in the Camp Providore. Thank you to you all.
Finally, I would like to pass on our debt of gratitude to some of those who we have sadly lost in the last 12 months, who over the years gave great service and love to the site. Ron Jennings, Geoff Yates and Sue West sadly missed, but won’t be forgotten.

Explorers
We have had a up and down year. We came out of covid with five Explorer Scout Units (ESUs), unfortunately two have since closed.

Cracken ESU, based at Chinley Scout Hut, is very healthy and is now full.

Taxal ESU are meeting regularly at Taxal Scout Hut

Solomons ESU, meeting at 1[st] Buxton Scout Hut is full. A new assistant leader has been found and everything seems to be running well with support from the previous leader.

Eccles Pike ESU has closed due to lack of numbers.

Hayfield ESU has closed, also due to lack of numbers.
The cooking competition was very well attended and was won by Cracken ESU, but it was very close. The Chilly Challenge was also well attended by Explorers and there is plenty of work going on in the ESUs towards Explorer badges.
It’s a shame that we have lost two ESUs and that we are having to turn people away. We are short of leaders and adult volunteers, and in some areas there are low numbers of young people moving up into Explorers.
Finally, I would like to thank all the Explorer Scout Leaders and their adult helpers for their hard work and enthusiasm in 2022.

Young Leaders
The Young Leader Unit is going from strength to strength:

There are currently 15 active Young Leaders registered with the District (as of 21/3/23)

A total of 11 training modules were delivered over 4 training days (February, October, November and December).

All active YLs registered prior to 1/1/23, including the 9 new YLs registered last year, have completed all the training modules and are currently working on their missions (4 of these need to do their First Aid training too). I have observed 2 of them delivering activities to their sections and aim to visit all of them at least once whilst they work towards the completion of their award. It is really useful to speak to Section Leaders when I visit and I have had some really positive comments from them about how the YLs are a great help to the running of their sections.

There is now a regular flow of new Young Leaders, with a new cohort due to start their training after Easter.

I am very grateful to the support with training sessions from Andy Vaines (Solomon’s Explorers) and Guy Townsend and to 1st Buxton for letting me use their hut.
