## **Chairman’s Report – October 2022**

It has been another successful year for School Lane as we continue to provide excellent childcare and value for money for parents in our community. We are in a unique position as a charity that we can keep our fees low. We have also been used as a pilot for the new Welsh Government curriculum showing the way on how to deliver pre-school education within a childcare setting.

I am also very proud of our provision for children with ALN. We find a way to ensure those children have the same benefits of mixing and communicating with their peers no matter how hard that can be to ensure the right provision is put in place to look after their needs. I would like to thank the staff who have been involved with 1:1 provision over the last 12 months, they have made a real difference to that child’s life and enriched the School Lane environment.

I am very grateful to our School Lane parents who have organised and contributed to fund raising efforts. These funds are spent on resources for the children and upgrading various play stations inside and outside. Every penny contributes and will result in us being able to keep our fees reasonable and that will directly help families in your community for years to come.

Finally, I would like to thank the Manager, Sandie, the Deputy Manager Julie and all the staff for their commitment and enthusiasm that I see every time I come into the building.

## **Financial Report**

An excellent childcare provision relies on excellent staff who are committed to their job and enjoy working at School Lane. Part of this package includes fair remuneration, and it was my aim to ensure that all staff would be paid a minimum of £10 per hour from April this year, this hourly rate rising depending on qualification levels of the staff.

With the rising cost of materials and food and the staff wages, we had to increase the fees from September 2022. But our full day rate is still just over £44. This is substantially less than what is now being charged for private provision in the area.

Although this has had an impact on our end of year accounts because the fee increase came 4 months after the wage rise, I am confident that the increase in staff wages is the right decision for School Lane and we will not see a deficit in next year’s accounts once the rise in fees is carried through to the next financial year.

SCHOOL LANE PRESCHOOL

School Lane

As with all childcare centers, it is about ‘numbers through the door’, and we continue to show parents around most weeks with our good reputation being shared from previous School Lane parents leading to waiting lists at certain times of the year.

We also have a healthy amount in our bank deposit account and current account, so we do have overall positive cashflow, noting that we always have to keep reserves for any arising redundancy pay.

The Manager and I have instructed our accountant to produce half yearly accounts in March so we can continue to monitor our cashflow.

To the committee of Schoollane,

I have completed the accounts Please can you look over them to check the figures in the columns.

The playgroup suffered a loss this year. Costs are up a lot in comparison to fees and fundraising. This is due to increase in wages, HMRC bill and pension costs. Rent was at a reduced charge due to Covid and cleaning costs are up due to Covid rules still being applied. Party costs are higher possible due to the extra Jubilee party.

Looking at these figures it appears the grants that come in for 3yr funding etc are what keeps the playgroup afloat. Wages should not rise again next year as they are well above the minimum wage

Thanks]

Caroline
