Annual Report for the year ended 30 September 2025
Origins and objectives
Shirley Men’s Shed (“the Shed”) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, formally established on 1 October 2018. It was initiated by members of St James Road Methodist Church and stands independently from the Church.
The objects of the Shed are to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing men aged 18 or over, within Shirley and the surrounding area, from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society through the provision of facilities in which they can meet to undertake creative, physical or recreational activities, learn or pass on skills and knowledge, and support each other socially.
The trustees during the year to 30 September 2025 were Hugh Evans, Brian Hooper, Cliff Rolfe, Colin Lockwood, Andy Blunsden, Tony Wood, Mark Stockwell and Carl Langley.
Development in the year to 30 September 2025
In October 2024 the Board reviewed its two-year and longer-term visions, and in January 2025 determined to develop the following:
-
morning sessions to run from 9.30 to 12.30 (previously 12.00);
-
one evening session to be run, starting in April;
-
social events to happen during existing morning sessions as well as on other occasions.
The longer morning sessions were generally well received, while some people chose to leave at their customary 12.00.
We started a new Thursday evening session in April 2025 but it attracted a very limited response and we discontinued it in July, with the aim of relaunching it in October 2025. We started occasional break-time quizzes in February 2025, with mixed results, and in June 2025 we started a games session on the first Monday morning each month, aiming to improve social interaction; we will monitor its effectiveness.
Our regular Wednesday session, from its beginnings in February 2023, has continued to develop with typically eight and sometimes more members attending.
The patio area serves as a useful space for work and/or seating, but not when wet or too hot; in April 2025 we set up our gazebo in that area, and that has turned out to be very useful.
Activity in the year to 30 September 2025
We attended a Christmas Craft Fair at St James Road Methodist Church, not only to help meet our costs by selling but also to promote our aim of social inclusion for men. We normally attend other public events during the year, most often at St James Park, but those were rained off this year.
We enjoyed a members’ Christmas Dinner in an upstairs room in the church, which is now becoming a tradition, and we arranged visits to Milestones Museum, near Basingstoke,
and a printing works run by one of our members, which were very much enjoyed by members.
We continued to make a variety of wooden products, some for sale, some for fun and some by request. Requests included the frame for a plastic bottle greenhouse for Upper Shirley High School, using timber left-overs from a large project by a major housing organisation.
Membership slightly increased this year, and as at 30 September 2025 we have 39 members, of whom over half attend at least once a week.
Finance
The financial position over the year is attached as an Appendix. Our main income came from fund raising, donations, subscriptions and grants. None of the Trustees or members received payment from the Shed.
