The Trustees have at all times had full regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit and have made decisions consistent with the objects and purposes of the Foundation. The main activity undertaken by the Foundation is scientific research in order to isolate, identify and characterise nitrogen fixing strains of bacteria and to elucidate attributes favourable to their use as a seed inoculants for crops for use by small-holder farmers. For the period the Trustees have sought grant funding and donations for research projects to expand the development, formulation, production and use of biological nitrogen fixation in small holder agricultural production systems. Of particular note is a project secured **Summary of the main activities** for a project in Rwanda but funding and collaboration has also been **undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these** sought in Mauritius, Senegal and Belize. **objects (include within this** In Mauritius the Foundation has a project providing advice to the **section the statutory declaration that trustees have** Mauritian Sugarcane Research Institute (MSIRI) in order to reintroduce indigenous strains of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria **had regard to the guidance** _Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (Gd)_ into elite cultivars of sugarcane **issued by the Charity** No costs have been insured by the Foundation in Mauritius, the field **Commission on public benefit)** trial costs have been covered by the MSRI. ## Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main** The Foundation prepared proposals and applied for grant funding for **achievements of the charity** research projects in the following countries: Mauritius, Senegal, Belize **during the year** and Rwanda. All the proposals involved collaboration with local partners. Funding for the project in Rwanda was secured with funding provided through the One Acre Fund. The initial studies undertaken by the Foundation have demonstrated that it is possible to isolate nitrogen fixing bacteria from sugarcane in Rwanda. Many strains were isolated and 44 nitrogen fixing strains of Gd were characterised using a wide range of laboratory and glasshouse bioassays before determining their efficacy in pot trials in Rubengara, Rwanda. Six potential elite strains were identified and their colonisation and impact within different crops including maize, sweet potato, Irish potato, wheat, beans, sorghum and tomato. The Foundation Lead Scientist Dr Nathalie Narraidoo and Founder Trustee Dr David Dent were co-authors on a paper published with our colleagues from the University of Nottingham: Michele Pallucchini, Martina Franchini, Enas M.
