applied for grant funding for research
projects in the following countries:
Mauritius, Senegal, and Rwanda. All the
proposals involved collaboration with local
partners. Funding for the project in
Rwanda was secured with funding
provided through the One Acre Fund. The
initial studies undertaken by the
Foundation have demonstrated that it is
possible to isolate nitrogen fixing bacteria
from sugarcane in Rwanda.
The Chair of Trustees attended a Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation workshop in
May 2023 in Seattle to discuss endophytic
nitrogen-fixation, the outcomes of which
are published in: “Endophytic microbes for
crop nutrition: reality or myth? Highlights
from an Expert Convening. SEATTLE,
MAY 16-17, 2023 .
Contributions to research on NanoSIMS
microscopy from the Foundation were
submitted to the scientific journal_eLife_in
the research paper entitled "Subcellular
visualization of the distribution of
atmospheric dinitrogen fixed by
_Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus_bacteria
in maize”.The results demonstrate that
fixed nitrogen derived from the nitrogen-
fixing bacteria_Gluconacetobacter_
_diazotropicus_colonised maize,
preferentially targeting leaf chloroplasts.
This is a significant achievement and a
