All the<br>proposals involved collaboration with local<br>partners. Funding for the project in<br>Rwanda was secured with funding<br>provided through the One Acre Fund. The<br>initial studies undertaken by the<br>Foundation have demonstrated that it is<br>possible to isolate nitrogen fixing bacteria<br>from sugarcane in Rwanda.<br>The  Chair of Trustees attended a Bill and<br>Melinda Gates Foundation workshop in<br>May 2023 in Seattle to discuss endophytic<br>nitrogen-fixation, the outcomes of which<br>are published in: “Endophytic microbes for<br>crop nutrition: reality or myth? Highlights<br>from an Expert Convening. SEATTLE,<br>MAY 16-17, 2023 .<br>Contributions to research on NanoSIMS<br>microscopy from the Foundation were<br>submitted to the scientific journal_eLife_in<br>the research paper entitled "Subcellular<br>visualization of the distribution of<br>atmospheric dinitrogen fixed by<br>_Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus_bacteria<br>in maize”.The results demonstrate that<br>fixed nitrogen derived from the nitrogen-<br>fixing bacteria_Gluconacetobacter_<br>_diazotropicus_colonised maize,<br>preferentially targeting leaf chloroplasts.<br>This is a significant achievement and a<br>global scientific first.|

I report in respect of my examination of  the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
