Objectives and activities

New Earswick Nature Reserve CIO was created to promote for the benefit of the public the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of New Earswick Nature Reserve.
Summary of main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects, or services identified in the accounts.
New Earswick Nature Reserve CIO exists to promote, conserve and improve the New Earswick Nature Reserve (the Nature Reserve). It is also keen to educate the public in all aspects of that by promoting Open Days and visits to other similar events; carrying out projects and any other work of a practical nature, both on its own and with other like-minded groups, to improve, enhance and conserve the Nature Reserve.
The Trustees consider that they have complied with their duties to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

We have continued to recruit more new volunteer members some of whom now actively support the Nature Reserve. We have also increased the number of Open Days and have commenced new funding streams to improve the financing of the Reserve. We have made connections with several groups interested in using the Nature Reserve
Achievements and performance

During in the financial period its most active elements have performed as follows:
Management:
Further ongoing tree management to ensure a safe, secure environment for all who visit. Maintenance and improvements to footpaths ensuring that access to and around the Nature Reserve, including wheelchair and electric buggy access, is available for all. The erection of a new shelter donated by J.H.R.T. plus several floating rafts and “duck houses”. Improvements to the water by the removal of pond weed. Additional planting of hedging around the Nature Reserve perimeter to add to the Reserve’s diversity. Clearance of several areas to improve biodiversity.
Publicity:
Continued to promote the Nature Reserve on social media.
Funding:
Arranged more Open Days including Easter and Halloween themed events. Continued support from the New Earswick Residents Forum contributed to the Nature Reserve’s public liability insurance. The Trustees continuing to look at plans regarding future funding and have now obtained a “Small Lotteries Licence” which will enable Christmas Draws and other promotions..
Future Planning:
A schedule of maintenance and development work for the forthcoming year is in operation.
We are awaiting the sign-off of plans for our Building from CoYC Building Control unit.
Further major tree work will be carried out, including the pollarding of several Willows, and the pond weed will continue to be monitored to see if further intervention is necessary.
Resurfacing of footpaths will be continued in 2023.

The charity remains solvent with adequate reserves and funding for the future.

The Trustees maintain a level of reserves to ensure that the Nature Reserve can function at least in the short term in the absence of income along with accommodating funds for future projects.
