Limb Difference Awareness Month is observed in April each year. It is dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about limb differences. The month-long campaign focuses on promoting inclusivity, educating the public about the challenges faced by individuals with limb differences, and advocating for equal opportunities in various aspects of life, including accessibility, healthcare, and employment. During this month we share positive images about Limb Difference - this year our theme was ‘Actually I can...’ we worked closely with other charities to send out a positive consistent message. Our parents and families supported us on social media

Our first camp

Its so nice to be around postive people to celebrate what our children can do rather than because of their differences What they can’t do

Camp LimbBo

These children supported one another and it didn’t matter if you had a limb difference or were a sibling – no one said you can’t do that… the thanks and round of applause for the volunteers at the end left us all quite tearful – we finished the weekend tired (this year’s understatement) but happy!

This was our first camp - held at Hesley Wood Scout activity Centre in Rotherham.

We had 38 children (our limb different children and their siblings who are just as important to us at Limbbo) and their parents booked onto this camp. Despite atrocious weather - hence the mud in the photo above - the children threw themselves into every activity. Climbing, Obstacle course, Zip wire, Go carts,Canoeing and crate stack.

AdventureDay 2023

Adventure Day is our biggest event every year. This year was our 5th Annual Day ((17th August 2023 Cawthorne Cricket Club Barnsley) and had 500 attendees - this included whole families and volunteers. The number of limb different children attending was 100. This event has grown, year on year and it is one of our main supports for families. The children can mix with others who have a limb difference, parents can chat, get support and talk to professionals such as Koalaa soft prosthetics, Exp Hand, Open Bionics as well as a LimbBo information stand where we can share literature, take orders for bike adaptations and generally give support and answer questions.

This event is completely free to attend and all families receive a goody bag which includes a t shirt, water bottle, sweets, badges and information leaflets Activities included, an inflatable obstacle course, golf, archery, football, cricket, a collection of fairground stalls, lego tent, bubble station, emmergency services display, face painters, creature ark, gymnastics, zumba, jiu jitsu, art tent, gaming van, and lunch.

It is the one time in the year where limb different children can find themselves in the majorty - they can feel safe and know that no one will point or stare at them. Feedback was incredibly positive with many attendees returning for the second or third year running.

The five hour drive was worth it, thank you everyone for sharing your stories, your advice and for lalowing us to ask so many personal questions.

LImbBo Parent

Attendees

Our 2023 Christmas party was held at the Fairways in Dodworth, Barnsley. We had 225 attendees. As always, these are family events and siblings are included. The event was free of charge and included: lunch, a present from Father Christmas (who arrived on a decorated articulated lorry courtesy of Bapp for Bolts), face painting, a family photo as well as lots of games, laughter and celebration. Our Youth ambassadors worked hard, acting as ‘elves’ for father Christmas as well as judging competitions and helping the Trustees to set up the room before families arrived.

Christmas Party

Contribution made by volunteers

• We continue to be supported by ambassadors who are all volunteers. Most of these are parents of limb different children so are ideally placed to offer both practical and emotional support both online and at face-to-face events.

• Volunteers are vital at our Summer, camping and Christmas events which require lots of work beforehand (in practical terms such as putting up marquees etc) and also during the day itself, overseeing activities, cooking food, supporting new parents and interacting with our children.

• Some ambassadors have specific roles such as creating and sending out new parent packs and fundraising packs.

• Many of our parents and their families have undertaken fundraising events to support us.

Youth

Ambassadors

We asked six of our young people to act as ambassadors for LimbBo. They are the ones who understand what support children with a limb difference and their siblings need.

This year they have acted as volunteers at events, supporting younger children and helping Trustees with practical tasks.

The have attended Fund Raisers (as well as all taking part in our October FUNraiser), spoken in schools alongside Trustees, worked as advisors to prosthetic companies and suppoted our new parent pack initiative.

Their roles will continue to grow, they share their ideas on social media and in our literature. We are incredibly proud of them.

3D Printed Bike

adaptations

Our 3D printed bike adaptations are designed and printed in house. These can be standard fitting or personalised to a particular child if needed. 45 adaptations were sent out this year including personalised ones for Never Say never Foundation and Limbitless possibilies in the USA

New Parent Packs

If I could go back to that day when I found out about ‘T’, I wish there had been someone to give me a hug and talk about my worries and say don’t worry he will be amazing look what these kids can do. Yes, they are wonderfully unique.

Thank you for my welcome packMy name is C and I'm 3 months old. I look forward to, when I'm older, joining in on your meet up days and meeting new friends 🧡 . Mummy and Daddy have found the pack super useful, thank you so much

We were receiving regular enquiries on our Facebook page from both expectant mums where their baby's limb difference had shown up on a scan and mums with new babies who had a limb difference. People were obviously anxious about the unknown and felt they needed someone to chat to and ask questions. Whilst there is always someone around to support new families in this way, we decided that it would be lovely to welcome them by sending out a pack. Amy, our new parent ambassador was the person who thought of this and has put the pack together - its evolving all the time .

Our pack comprises a baby grow or t shirt, a limbBo beare The booklet created by our children about their limb differences has been a big hit, as well as our booklet containing parents’ stories There are badges, information about LimbBo and some special extras from Isabelle

Hospital Packs

hospitals and limb centres so far

Having introduced our in house new parent booklet last year we realised that it was important to get our literature into as many hospitals as possible. Our parents have been a key link and we have a trustee who overees this initiative. All literature is created by another Trustee. These have been well received

Raising Awareness

Raising awareness surrounding limb difference is vital to promoting inclusion. When children are exposed to diversity at an early age and in a positive way then they are more likely to be accepting of others. By visiting schools either as part of their PHSE sessions or as part of their STEM sessions we can show what living with a limb difference entails. By including some of our youth ambassadors in these visits we have seen children openly ask questions and overcome any preconceived ideas that they may have .

Social Media

One of our main channels of support is via social media. Whilst we have a presence on all major sites our most valuable is our closed group for families on Facebook. March 2024 the number in this group was 1,550. It is a safe site as people have to apply to join (although obviously this is free) and all posts are moderated before being uploaded.

This has been used to answer both practical and emotional questions, share ideas , ask questions, find others who are local to you and most of all a safe space to share photos and celebrate to achievemnets of our children.

All of our events and activities are advertised on here and this is growing steadily each month.

Reading the stories and seeing photos of individuals with limb differences who are doing incredible things and happy warms my heart and is especially needed at the moment.

Thank you for reading, from a nervous, nearly new mum

I have found so information on this page last night scrolling through posts of the inspirational children and their families and the support that is actually available. Thank you all for putting my mind at rest, knowing ‘E’ will be just fine and thrive

online competitions

In October 2023 we asked our families if they could join in a month of FUN raising - ie raising funds for us by doing something they enjoyed.

As our only funds come from donations during this period march 2023 - March 2024 -added to the fact that we made it a policy to not charge for anything we needed a boost to our funds. Turning to our families for support we were stunned at the amount our children raised. They walked, swam, cycled, built, baked, painted... proving to us beyond a doubt that LimbBo is a family and always works together.

Mini Meets

We are looking to introduce ‘mini meets’ which will cut down the time gap between our main events. These are local meet up which are organised either by trustees or by one of our parents. This year we have had two meet ups at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, exploring the Hidden forest and sculpture building, and one in Scarborough where children tried out body boarding.
