## Dear Donors, 

## Assalamu Alaykum, 

Alhamdulillah over the past year, Al-Fikr’s reach has grown extensively. We are now actively operating across 8 countries in South Asia and Africa with the ability to offer aid in response to various emerging humanitarian crises. In doing so, we have established relationships with NGOs and charities based in those countries to identify ways in which we can collaborate and assist those most in need quickly. Aside from extending our global reach, we have also grown our UK reach through establishing further teams throughout England and Wales. This has allowed us to offer aid UK wide and, in doing so, the Al-Fikr charity name has become further established and known. We have reached out to nearly 30,000 vulnerable people with immediate relief through supporting the homeless, installing hand water pumps, water wells, handing out food packages and distributing education packs including school supplies. None of these projects would have been possible without the help of our generous donors and volunteers. Our latest projects in Pakistan saw the opening of a soup kitchen in January 2021, providing free meals for approximately 1000 people every week and the construction of a mobile school. We hope to expand both of these projects across the countries that we work in. This annual report highlights some of our recent achievements and activities whilst documenting our financial statements for the year ended 21 October 2020. ## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

## **Board of Trustees** 

The Board of Trustees sets our future aims and priorities focusing on strategic planning and governance and also evaluates our performance and progress in our work to alleviate poverty and suffering. 

The Board of Trustees appraises the Senior Management Team and can make appointments to it as well as dismissals. The Board of Trustees also make sure that we satisfy the regulatory requirements on us as a charity and works with key stakeholders. 

## **Recruiting and Appointing Trustees** 

All our trustees are volunteer, chosen because they all have the diverse range of skills, knowledge and experience that we need to respond to the challenges of today. Stakeholders and partners may nominate trustees and sometimes we will make a personal approach to potential candidates. 

## **Key Personnel** 

The Secretary is accountable to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for our day-to-day management. The Secretary chairs the Senior Management Team, which is made up of the Programmes, Fundraising and Finance Departments and all the policies are implemented through our staff and volunteers. 

## **Governing document** 

AL-FIKR refers to the charity incorporated organisation with a governing document known as CIO constitution by association originally incorporated on 22 October 2019. 

## **Responsibilities of Trustees** 

The annual Report and Financial statements are prepared according to the relevant law and approved by the trustees. 

The trustees keep adequate accounting records and they show and explain our transactions. The records also disclose our financial position with reasonable accuracy at any time and enable trustees to ensure that the financial statements comply with Charity Commission Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) 2015. 

## **Grant Making Policies** 

We provide grants to projects if the request meets our charitable objectives and criteria. Project grant making is managed according to a designated process, which is documented in our Operational Risk-Management Framework”. We aim to treat all grant applications professionally, equally and fairly. We make the final decision as to eligibility to receive a grant, at our discretion. 

## **Public Benefit** 

We develop strategic plans to make certain that we provide maximum public benefit and achieve our strategic objectives, which fall under purposes defined by the Charity Act 2006. 

## **Where We Work** 

AL-FIKR has development projects in Pakistan and Liberia. AL-FIKR is striving to reach out to vulnerable communities in many other countries of the world as well.

## **OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIC ACTIVITIES FOR THE BENEFIT** 

The objects of the charity are set below: 

1. TO ADVANCE THE ISLAMIC RELIGION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE WORLD FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC THROUGH THE HOLDING OF MEETINGS, LECTURES [PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS] PRODUCING AND/OR DISTRIBUTING LITERATURE ON AND TO ENLIGHTEN OTHERS ABOUT THE ISLAMIC RELIGION. 

2. TO ADVANCE IN LIFE AND HELP YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH: (A) THE PROVISION OF RECREATIONAL AND LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES PROVIDED IN THE INTEREST OF SOCIAL WELFARE, DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THEIR CONDITIONS OF LIFE; (B) PROVIDING SUPPORT AND ACTIVITIES WHICH DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS, CAPACITIES AND CAPABILITIES TO ENABLE THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIETY AS MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS. 

Our Compassion and Transformation Strategy sets out how we are putting our faith into action to secure the greatest possible positive impact on the people we serve. We are guided by the timeless values and teaching of Islam, with challenging aims designed to facilitate real social change. In addition, we are fulfilling a set of core promises throughout our work: 

## **Strengthening Local Capacity:** 

- We empower communities to manage their own affairs and develop the capacity of civil society itself through partnerships. 

## **Education and Capacity Building:** 

- We educate communities and build capacities to minimize their dependency and help them in building their own society by planning access to their basic rights like water, health and other services.

The charity carried a number of activates in the year 2021 such as: 

## **WATER PUMPS** 

In rural parts of less economically developed countries such as Tanzania, Pakistan and India, women spend up to five hours every day in search of water, which is often contaminated. Al-Fikr recognised this and it is our mission to help these individuals have access to water. Al-Fikr has to date installed 350 water facilities including hand pumps and water wells. This has benefited over 3500 individuals located in poor and impoverished communities.

## **RAMADAN FOOD PACKAGES** 

Throughout the holy month of Ramadan in 2021, we were able to help the needy locally and internationally. Locally we were able to feed over 3000 people living homeless and in poverty. We have supported the Palestinian with Monthly Ration packages. We were also able to provide Eid packages to the Paslestinian and Pakistanis as well as providing an individual service for those selfisolating. Internationally we were able to distribute food and water aid across 10 countries and, in doing so, provided over 150,000 meals to widows, orphans, disabled and those in need within those countries.

## **Education** 

AL-FIKR believes in “Education for All” and is determined to make access to quality school Education easier in the less developed areas across Pakistan for the unprivileged class. For this cause, we distributed Books in the students of primary and pre-primary level to have a better standard of Education and be able to compete with the rest of the world.

## **QURBANI 2021** 

Qurbani means **sacrifice** . Every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world slaughter an animal – a goat, sheep, cow or camel – to reflect the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of God. The Qurbani meat **allows some families to eat meat after a whole year** . When families receive Qurbani meat, it fosters a real sense of hope for them and allows them to celebrate this important occasion along with millions of other Muslims across the world. In 2021, We, at Al-Fikr, sacrificed **12** Animals on this Eid in Punjab, Pakistan. The meat was distributed in 130 beneficiaries.

## **Achievements and Performances** 

Al-Fikr was able to provide support for those living in the UK and abroad in countries such as Liberia, Tanzania, Palestine, India & Pakistan. We provided food parcels, water pumps, Books, education material, clothes, qurbani meat, Ramadan rations and fun days for those who are in need of aid. This helped us provide help to over 3,000 individuals locally, and 150,000+ individuals in Pakistan, India, Tanzania & as many as 10 countries. 

This was all possible with the support of our generous donors who contributed towards this cause. 

## **Financial Review** 

The charity received sum of **£102,314** in donations from various sources. 

## **Funds in Deficit:** 

No funds are in deficit at the balance sheet. 

## **Funds in Surplus:** 

The funds are in surplus by **£36,219** at the balance sheet. 

## **Small Company Provisions:** 

This report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies entitled to small companies’ exemption.

I report on the accounts for the period 22[nd ] October 2020 to 21[st] October 2021 set out below. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The charity’s trustees responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for the period (under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is required. 

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: 

- Examine the accounts 

- Follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and 

- To state weather particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of the independent examiner’s report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

- (1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements have not been met;
