THE BEGINNING
Sakubva Helper UK Charity was the brainchild of retired Educationists from Chelmsford and London back in August 2014 over a Reunion lunch. This was in response to a request from Rebuild Sakubva Trust, an initiative conceived and implemented by the residents of Sakubva Township in the City of Mutare in Zimbabwe. In spite of the economic challenges facing the nation of Zimbabwe, the desire to educate and prepare its children for the future has never diminished. We wanted to HELP them HELP themselves.
THE ACTIVITIES
In 2020 we continued with the “Don’t Skip It, We'll Ship It “ Campaign and we continued with requesting educational resources from Schools mainly in Chelmsford and London.
This resulted with the Tendering High School donating 68 CPUs , 125 Screens, 12 Microscopes , 15 Smartboards , 12 Laptops, and Textbooks.
We also decided to give the children at Diligence Academy a surprise Xmas gift. Most, if not all, of the children have never received a Xmas Card let alone a Xmas gift. We thought we could
provide this in the form of a Rucksack filled with Exercise Books, Calculator,Pen,Pencil , Sanitizer, Face Mask, a Xmas Gift and a Xmas Card. All these items are hard to come by in Zimbabwe. They get to keep the Rucksacks as well as the contents.
Our main donors for the “Xmas Goodies Rucksacks “ Campaign were the local Chelmsford Schools and institutions, largely complemented by our local North Springfield Baptist Church congregation. A total of 70 Rucksacks were filled with the Goodies mentioned above.
s
The shipment of the donations to Zimbabwe is the highlight of our achievements in 2020. We managed to send a 20 foot Container full of what had occupied our Garage for some time. In the Container were our usual educational and recreational resources. But this time round we also collected donations for the Cyclone Idai victims . Things like CLOTHING, TORCHES, SANITARY PADS, CROCKERY, CUTLERY ETC. This would not have been made possible without the general public who helped us tremendously with the donations and the shipping costs. Because of the pandemic we had to postpone/cancel all planned Fundraising activities for the year.
We also managed to send a second Container which we shared with other local organisations sending donations to Zimbabwe we had the following items:
-
Laptops
-
Desktop Computers
-
Keyboards
-
Screens
-
Microscopes
-
Smartboards
-
“Xmas Goodies Rucksacks” that had in them Calculators, Exercise Books,Pens, Masks, Sanitizer and a Gift
-
60 Rucksacks were sent in total and each child kept the Rucksack as well.

BEYOND 2020
This pandemic in 2020 was an eye opener. What having Zoom meetings and trying to find ways of continuing our work without the normal indoor or outdoor Fundraising activities. We are determined more than ever to carry on and do better.
It is hoped that in April/May 2021 we will be able to provide each Family with a child at the Diligence Academy with basic necessities like Maize, Cooking Oil,Sugar, and Soya Chunks.
We’re also determined to look into the following issues
-
Solar Power for the Recording Studio and for the Diligence Academy so they will be able to function in the case of power failure in Zimbabwe
-
Extending our Educational and Recreational donations to the Prisons in Zimbabwe
-
The Teachers and their wellbeing.
We would very much like to raise awareness of what we are doing to help and be able to raise enough funds to help us provide this. Seeing the pleasure it has brought to many folks in Zimbabwe it has given us the strength and will to try harder next year. We are continuing
to communicate with relevant Schools and Educational Institutions and the general public.
It is our main desire to make the children here realise how fortunate they are and how they can be part of helping their disadvantaged and less fortunate counterparts in Zimbabwe. They will also benefit from learning about other Cultures, Music, Sports, and way of life of their counterparts.
We hope we can play a part in making the children communicate and help each other and while they are doing that be able to understand one another just that little more.
