Charity’s purpose
As stated in the charity’s Trust Deed our main purpose remains: ‘the relief of poverty and the advancement of education of children living in Zambia, in particular but not exclusively by the provision of funds and items to the Good Samaritan Ministries School in Lusaka, Zambia
Governance
There was no change to the charity’s structure during the year, 4 trustees were reappointed for a further 3 year term and the trustees continued to meet both informally and formally throughout the year, to co-ordinate fund-raising activities and agree expenditure.
Summary of activities in the year
Fund Raising
Funds totalling £38973.12 were raised during the course of the year. The Covid pandemic continued to curtail fundraising events but some events managed to be held outdoors; (a plant sale, the Gower ‘yomp’, a street party and carol singing) and others via social media; (the house building appeal and a Christmas raffle).
We were very thankful to the 78 supporters who contributed throughout the year to our support fund which helps us meet our ongoing commitment to paying for 4 teachers’ salaries and the daily feeding programme at the Good Samaritan Ministries School, Lusaka, Zambia. We were also hugely grateful to the numerous individual donors who generously supported us financially in the year and to the donations and support received from Wesley Church and Watford Welsh Congregational Church, also; Coed-y-lan, Whitchurch, Llysfaen and Rhiwbeina primary schools. We were also fortunate to be granted £5000 by the Kitchen Tables Charities Trust to install a borehole and solar pump at Namununga Community School. This grant was paid for by Mr John Parrott in loving memory of his late partner Sally Longstreeth who died in 2020. We also received a donation of £2000 from Tilney Smith and Williamson Charities Committee.
Full details of the funds raised and their source are shown in the attached accounts for the year.
Expenditure
Expenditure during the year was £37293.17 £9586.89 was paid to the Good Samaritan Ministries School in Lusaka for salaries, feeding, covid related protection, minor repairs and equipment and school fees for one student of exceptional ability. This is less than our annual commitment because of the delays in setting up a new bank account for the school following the death of the main signatory to the school’s bank account.
£6712 was paid to help fund a community schools project led by EEF in the Chipata area of Zambia.
£20994 was paid to our partners Zambia Women and Girls Foundation based in Monze in Zambia’s Southern Province. This funded the building of a Teacher’s house, installation of a borehole and solar pump,
refurbishment of a 2 classroom block and emergency repairs to the roof of a 3 classroom block at Namununga Community School (about 45km from Monze).
Communication
We have endeavoured to keep postings on our website up to date along with information on our MAD4Kids Facebook page. Two Newsletters were distributed to supporters in 2021: one in June and the other in December. A video presentation of activities during the year was compiled and sent to supporters.
Projects supported during the year, and their impact:
1. Good Samaritan School, Lusaka
This school, situated on the outskirts of the capital city, Lusaka, has now been supported by trustees for over 15 years. Despite its continuing financial struggles, through its dedicated team of professionally qualified teachers it provides free quality education to more than 300 orphans and vulnerable children from pre-school to Grade 7.
MAD4Kids pays for the salaries of 4 of the teachers at the school, funds the daily feeding programme at the school and is the school’s main benefactor.
In addition to the payments for salaries and feeding paid every 4 months during the year, additional monies were sent to the school to enable it to meet government standards for covid prevention. Face masks, sanitisers, gloves and hand washing facilities were provided. The school has also continued to use the computer facilities and printer paid for by MAD4Kids, to encourage home learning.
Trustees were saddened to learn of the death of our long-term partner in Zambia, Bishop Alick Malama, who passed away through covid on 21[st] June 2021. He was also Director of the Good Samaritan Ministries School. We were pleased to learn that his son Timothy Malama, who works at the school, has agreed to continue to be the main link with our charity.
2. Walk in My Shoes project
Throughout the year shoes have continued to be donated by private individuals and pupils at local schools. The covid pandemic severely restricted the ability to ship shoes to Zambia, (through Operation Sunshine), but 2 shipments of shoes were sent containing more than 1000 pairs of shoes for distribution within Zambia.
3. Sponsoring a gifted pupil
The charity has continued to pay the uniform costs and school fees for the secondary education of a gifted but disadvantaged ex-GSM school pupil, described by the Minister of Education as the ‘cream of the nation’. He was found a place in Chongwe High Boarding School in January 2019 and he continues to do well in his secondary education.
4. Pre-school play project
Lockdown problems restricted our ability to send 28 boxes of toys/games and reading materials for use in pre-school play groups in Zambia but the shipment finally left the UK in July 2021 and was safely delivered.
5. Community Schools Project, Chipata
MAD4Kids helped finance the initiation of a project run by the charity EEF (Equal Education Fund) in the Chipata area of Zambia. 10 community schools are being supported by the project which aims to help the local communities improve the infrastructure of their schools and the quality of the education they provide.
6. Namununga Community School, near Monze, Southern Province, Zambia.
Following trustees’ agreement to support another school in Zambia, MAD4Kids partnered with Zambia Women and Girls Foundation in Monze, Zambia to support Namununga Community School, a community built school in a rural area of Southern Province, Zambia. The initial report showed a school with 250 children which was built (in 2001) and funded entirely by the local community but which was desperately in need of external support. There was no water at the school, 6 unqualified teachers, only 27 desks and little in the way of resources. Priorities for the school were finding professional teachers (they needed to be provided with government standard housing), the provision of safe drinking water and improving the dilapidated classroom blocks. In the course of the year, the charity has funded the building of a Teacher’s house and a government funded Teacher has been appointed to the school. A bore hole with solar pump has been installed and a two classroom block totally refurbished. Emergency work was also undertaken to repair the roof of a 3 classroom block following severe damage caused by storms at the end of the year.
