Founded in 1868, the Reid Trust was
eslablished to improve and promote the
education of women in the United Kingdom,
a mission the Trust continues in the very
different social and educational environment
of the twenly-first century Ils purpose is to
support women who have been educated in
the UK at secondary or tertiary level, or both,
and who want lo pursue higher education,
research, or training at an appropriate
educational establishment in the UK.
Applicants do not need to have been bom in
the UK.

Trustees invite applications for awards from
the Trust usually once every two years. The
purpose of these awards is lo help the
applicant meet the costs of education or
training, nomially at postgraduate level.
Typically, the awards are used to cover in
part or whole the various expenses incurred
as a consequence of study or training.. e.g.,
fees, equipment, travel costs within the UK,
childcare or other care provision.
In the award year, the application process
opens in January with the deadline for
submissions set in May. In the following
June or July trustees meet to asses5 the
applications and to decide on the disbursal
of awards of be￿een £200 to £1500.

The trustèes, regard for the Charity
Commission guidance on public benefit is
demonstrated by their work to further the
purpose of the Trust by the regular
distribution of awards.
This work involves an annual meeting of
trustees to discuss issues critical to the
efficient administration of the Trust, including
its obligations as a Charitable Incorporated
Organisation, finances, and the public profile
presented on the website.
As regards the process for the selection of
beneficiaries, the trustees are responsible
for the scrutiny of all applications,
references, and any other supporting
material pertaining to individual applicants.
At the awards, meeting, they discuss their
evaluation of the submissions, taking into
account the quality of the application, the
strength of supporting references, and the
circumstances of the individual applicant.

Achievements and Performance

The Trust distributes awards of between
£200 and £1500 usually every years.
Currently our investment income, which
funds the awards, is sufficient to meet the
financial demands of a two-year, rather than
a one-year, cycle. Although the sums of
money are relatively small, the awards help
beneficiaries cover the often considerable
costs of training programmes and
postgraduate degrees and diplomas.

There is a high demand among women to
advance their academic andlor professional
careers. In recent years the Trust has
supported awardees enrolled on diplomas
and other professional wurses le.g.,
Therapeutic Counselling, Humanistic
Counselling and Psychotherapy,
Professional Voice Studies) and at different
levels of postgraduate study {e.g., DPhil,
PhD, MA, MFA, MFA Producing, Mmus,
MPhil. MPP, MRes, MSC, Mst, Veterinary
Science Accelerated Graduate Entry)
As regards the benefit to society as a whole,
the Trust's awardees include those who
have pursued, or who are pursuing,
fields of sludy Ihal impact directly on public
health and the social fabric, such as
Molecular Neuroscien￿, Clinical Forensic
Psychology, Global Maternal Health, Speech
and Language Therapy, Art Therapy,
Environmenlal Policy and Regulation, and
the Social Science of the Internet.

The Trust's sole source of funding is the
income from investments held by the CCLA,
the UK'S largest charity fund manager and a
pioneer in ethical and responsible
investment. The income is used to realise
the key objeclive of the Trust, namely the
disbursal of awards to further the education
of women. In addition, money from income
covers the Trust's administrative expenditure
(in the period under report this amounted to
£5211.
