The trustees, who are directors for the purposes of company law, present the annual report together with the financial statements of the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2022.

## **Trustees’Report: April 2021 – March 2022**
The year started with the completion of the final items for the change over from an unincorporated to a Charitable incorporated Organisation (CIO) and our large solicitor’s bill was settled. Thus drawing an end to a rather protracted process but one that enable future Trustees to more easily come forward and take and active part in the Charity.
The governments Covid measures have been in place for the start of this year which has meant that the Centre has only been able to physically open for private practise. The equipment and facilities which were purchased and installed last year have continued to enable us to teach Buddhism using the online platform Zoom. All Council meetings for the year have been held online due to ongoing Covid restrictions. It is expected that in-person Council meetings will resume next year.
Works started last year on the main downstairs room to improve its layout and increase capacity, they have now been completed at the beginning of the year. Thus when the doors could open in June 2022 we were in a much better position to handle the increase in numbers we experienced.
As in previous years, through the summer, on Sundays we held a number of ‘Meditation in the Park’ sessions. These are held in Ipswich’s central public park, and are free to all to attend. People do come along specially, but we also have people come along who have just gone out for a walk in the park and are willing to give meditation a go. Over the year as the Covid restrictions were lifted many of our classes became hybrid, that is with some of the class in the Centre and some attending online. However, most people found attending in-person was a much missed experience and numbers attending the Centre slowly increased. Eventually only a few of our classes were left running as Hybrid, and most returned to their pre-Covid state of being in-person only.
In September we were able to hold our first residential weekend retreat this year at Vajrasana. The retreat was very well attended and enjoyed by all. A second Vajrasana weekend Sangha retreat was held in January, again very well attended.
In October it was decided to pay off our mortgage in full. The decision was made because of an expected base rate interest rise and the increase in the rate that Triodos charged us after the CIO was created. Payment was completed in January and a celebration was held at the Centre to mark the event.
Also in October we employed a new part-time media person. They were tasked with maintaining and improving our Facebook and Tik-Tok presence. Primarily to improve our reach to a younger audience.
In November we installed our GoodBox contactless donation machine. This has enabled people attending the Centre to donate to the centre via their swipe bank cards. This was been necessary as post-Covid many people do not use cash and paying via contactless methods is now the norm.
During the year two Trustees, Avril Miller and David Vasey left the Council after many years of diligent service to the Charity. Avril had held the office of Treasurer, but is now able to focus more on her Ordination process.

David had fulfilled many roles for the Charity as he had been at various times, the Secretary, acting Chair and also Men’s Mitra Convenor. He still continues helping the Charity but now only in a teaching role.
In July 2021, a member of our Ipswich Buddhist community, was Ordained after a short Covid compliant retreat at Padmaloka Retreat Centre in Norfolk. He was given a new Buddhist name of Prajnakara and returned to Ipswich with much rejoicing. Despite the severe Covid restrictions at the beginning of the year, the charity has continued to run a very full programme of activities for the people of the Ipswich. Giving them the opportunity, both online and in-person to learn about Buddhism.
Our popular Saturday morning newcomers class continued as a Hybrid class for this year. Ideal for those that prefer to attend a daytime class or have work pressures that make weekday evenings difficult. This class and is led by our Ipswich, ‘born and bred’ Order Member, Dharmacari Ariyanivata, so it has a particular appeal to those who have lived in Ipswich for some time.
Level 1 and 2, 6 week Buddhism courses have been running online throughout the year. These successful courses are followed by the Foundation year of our four year Mitra study course and is ideal for those wanting to commit themselves to a Buddhist way of life. Like previous years we have had Open Days, workshops, introductory classes and courses, evening rituals and festivals but all being in the online space.
We were fortunate to have a few visits from many Triratna Order Members, including some senior Order Members to our Friends evening. In addition to the very skilled teaching on offer, these visits are a very useful way for local Buddhists to experience the wider Triratna Buddhist Community. We have had events looking more fully at the Buddha’s teaching and at becoming more skilled at Buddhist meditation.
We have had more requests to join the Triratna Buddhist Order. There are weekly events for those training for ordination into the Triratna Buddhist Order. We have had people deepening their commitment to the Buddhist way of life at all levels.
The Council of the Charity continue throughout the year to meet regularly online to conduct business which includes a monthly Council meeting of all trustees. We have continued to give support to the people of Ipswich town in various ways. The '8 step recovery’ addiction support group is very popular with weekly peer-led meetings. We have been involved in the national Buddhist Action Month (BAM) again this year, and held a number of events and special classes looking at world ecological issues and local health initiatives. During the year we also collected and donated food and useful items to a number of local Ipswich charities including the Light-House project.
So I am very pleased to say that our centre and community continues to thrive.

## **Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities**
The trustees (who are also the directors of Triratna Buddhist Community (Ipswich) for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the trustees' report and the financial statements in accordance with the United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) and applicable law and regulations.
Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the trustees must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including its income and expenditure, for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the charitable company's transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of Triratna Buddhist Community (Ipswich)**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2022 which are set out on pages 6 to 10.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
As the charity’s trustees of Triratna Buddhist Community (Ipswich) (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (‘the 2006 Act’).
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of Triratna Buddhist Community (Ipswich) are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of Triratna Buddhist Community (Ipswich) as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities [applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)].
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
