Chairman’s Report for 2025
This year has been a year of considerable change in many respects, but especially within our managing trustees committee.
Following the AGM last year when I recorded our thanks to Joan Wilcox for covering the position of secretary after Dorothy's retirement, I am very pleased to record that Roger LInthwaite then offered his services. I must now give our huge thanks to him for most ably fulfilling this position and thank him for all the work he has undertaken throughout this year in so many areas to bring the administration up to date and improve our procedures. A massive thank you.
I was most disappointed in November to receive a letter from Yvonne, our treasurer, tendering her resignation from this most important post. It was completely unexpected but understandable. However, following extensive advertising and promotion we were very lucky to have filled the vacancy after Terry very kindly stepped forward in response. Yvonne did a terrific job during her tenure in the position, and we all owe her a huge vote of thanks and a welcome to Terry. Thank you for coming forward and taking on this role, we look forward to working with you for many years to come.
The year has been a busy one and very productive and fulfilling. You have heard the positive report from our house sub-committee, and I would like to express our huge thanks to Bob and his team on their hard work throughout the year. Again, sadly, Bob has indicated his decision to stand down from the position of chairman after overseeing that committee for many years. Thank you Bob for everything and for all you have done. Welcome to Eric who volunteered, without too much arm twisting, to take on the post following today’s meeting.
On a positive note, we are fortunate that both Yvonne and Bob have offered to stay on the committee as trustees.
The offer of help by Anna - Marie as booking secretary sadly did not materialise but this has very efficiently been covered by Horst in the meantime until a permanent replacement can be found. Many thanks Horst for agreeing to help in this most important task.
Very sadly we lost one of our very long-standing trustees during the year. Pat Richardson had been a Trustee for decades and provided many useful ideas, thoughts and observations throughout her time with us. She will be greatly missed.
Anyway, that is enough about changes on the executive committee.

So, moving on to much more mundane matters we have continued to monitor and maintain the building and its facilities so allowing it to carry on providing this much appreciated and needed local facility within the heart of our community. In these times of ever-increasing costs we have, in common with all organisations and the population as a whole, had to keep a very close check on the utilities and our overall expenditure, this also includes reviewing our letting charges to match the increased expenditure.
So. talking of finances leads me onto the property extension and our efforts in trying to raise funds to enable us to provide this much needed extra space. I am sure you have all seen, don't know how you could miss them, the banners around the fence. This was Horst's idea and has raised a considerable amount of money to go towards the building fund. Brilliant idea thanks. Also, Horst and Roy have throughout the year been sending out applications all over the place for grant aid, mostly sadly, mainly to no avail within this year but things look more promising for 2026. So more of that next year. Roy has also been gallantly pressing ahead with his crowd funding and donation requests. Our funds have therefore been creeping up as you will have seen on the thermometer. Our sincere thanks to you both for your perseverance.
We have through the year continued with the alterations to the CIO to reflect the new administration arrangements and revised constitution. These have all now been agreed by the trustees and will be put to the membership for their final approval during 2026.
We were honoured and privileged to have a visit by Cllr Roy Galley, Chairman of ESCC, and our Town Mayor Cllr Karen Bedwell. Councillor Galley was touring various community facilities within East Sussex, and he was very interested and appreciative of all the work and effort provided by our volunteers in running this centre. He wished to thank us all on behalf of the community, so well done everyone.
Finally, as I have said in each of my previous reports, I would like to thank my fellow committee members who have worked so hard and with enthusiasm to maintain this brilliant facility. I really appreciate their advice, support and ideas given in all of our deliberations throughout the year so thank you all very much.
