TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023
OCEANS OF HOPE UK
The trustees present their report together with the financial statements of the charity for the period ended 31 March 2023. The financial statements comply with the charity’s governing document, Charity Commission guidance on receipts and payments accounts, and applicable law.
The legal and administrative information set out on page 1 forms part of this report.
Overview
This report is to be read in conjunction with our annual return for the UK charities commission.
Oceans of Hope UK operates sailing events for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We operate in many locations, using donated or rented sailing vessels with qualified Captains and crew in a number of locations around the UK and worldwide.
Our aim is to bring a sense of purpose, community and purpose to our participants. We enable opportunities for learning new skills, physical activity and opportunities for interaction with other people who have MS.
Our aim this year was to build on our post Covid year in 2021, which proved successful in offering, as much as possible, local sailing events to local people. We wanted to offer opportunities for people who are now able to travel nationwide as well as internationally.
We have actively recruited additional administrative volunteers along with ‘at event’ volunteers. A short training event took place in March.
In 2021, we delivered 284 sailing opportunities. In 2023 our number was 407. This is a real indicator of the hard work put in by the whole team.

*** the Turkey event was rolled over from our planned 2020 event**
The main focus in the first half of 2022 was to complete and deliver our new website. We have Kate Turnbull and our friends at AKA to thank for this. Our website is a great platform and is easily navigated by people wishing to find out about us as well as sign up for events. The website can be kept up to date with ease.
In the summer of 2022, with the help of Julia Warsap, we issued our first subscriber newsletter called “Magnificent Sailors”. We see this as a great addition keeping followers and potential partners informed of future events as well as updates on the charity and individual stories.
Our social media work has increased our followers enormously. In 2020, we had something line 250 followers on Instagram. Now we have over 1000. Once again, this makes us a little more attractive to potential partners.

TRUSTEES' REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023
Our hopes for the future
Further to the request of the board of trustees, it was our aim to prepare our 2023 calendar by Christmas 2022. This was successfully delivered in time. Our aim this year is to have 2024 calendar confirmed by the autumn of
Oceans of Hope UK have adequate funds in reserve to provide a secure platform to operate in a similar way for the next two years. However, it is my aim to bring together a more sustainable fundraising / partnership plan for the next stage of our development.
With the valued input of Kate Turnbull, we now have a fantastic pitch document/ partnership proposal document for potential corporate partners. Our aim this autumn is to get this document out there and hopefully bring in support for a specific event in the UK in 2024.
We have now recruited a volunteer finance assistant to take over from our previous bookkeeper Rosemary. It must be noted that Rosemary’s hard work, patience and perseverance have been so much appreciated since her commencing in 2019.
The continued work of Nicola Kaufman is vital for our success in 2024, however, the organisation will need one key volunteer to support her. Nicola is currently considering potential volunteer candidates.
Financial review
During the period the charity received income of just over £99,000 (2022: £21,000), and paid expenses of just over £79,000 (2022: £25,000), giving rise to a surplus of just over £20,000 (2022 deficit: just under £5,000).
At 31 March 2022 the charity holds £40,375 (2022: £20,371) in unrestricted free reserves. Reserves are held for the ongoing benefit of the charity to allow for the charity to meet expenses as they fall due, and to provide support for the charity to meet the unanticipated costs or circumstances that all organisations must contend with from time to time.
Principle sources of fundraising
During the period the charity received income of donations of £4,900 from Hilary’s Dream Trust, £27,000 from Superyacht charity and £6,950 from Royal Yachting Association. These will be carried forward for future events
Structure, Governance and Management
The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed directly by Charity Law and regulated by the Charity Commission of England and Wales. It operates under its constitution.
In selecting individuals for appointment as appointed charity trustees, the charity trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO. Oceans of Hope UK are an affiliate member of the RYA Sailability program.
Statement of trustees responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with Statements of Recommended Practice and the regulations made under the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023
I report on the accounts of the charity for the period ended 31 March 2023, set out on pages 5 to 6.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioner. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and the seeking of explanations from trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
(a) to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
(b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
-
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Dear Nicola
Independent Examination for the year to 31 March 2023
I am pleased to say we have completed our preparation and examination of the accounts for the period ending 31 March 2023, and I have uploaded a copy for the trustee’s consideration.
I should be grateful if you would arrange for the trustees to look through the figures carefully and ensure that they are in line with your expectations. If you are satisfied that they are correct, please print and sign a copy of the accounts on Pages 3 and 5, and then return them to me for certifying.
Charity Commission Annual Return
I believe in past years you have filed the Charity Commission annual return, which includes uploading a copy of the accounts yourselves.
As you are probably aware the Charity Commission have changed their system for filing the annual return this year and should have sent you details earlier in the year of how to setup access to your new account. If you need assistance with this please let me know. The annual return is due for filing by 31 January 2024.
Finally, I enclose a note of my charges for your kind attention.
Kind regards
Yours sincerely
