Dlrector's Report
In 2020, the Friends of the Goelhe-lnslitul London continued their aclivilies, following the foundation of
the charity in 2017 and launch of ils fir8t projects in 2018. The Friends are dedicated lo supporting
projects of the Goelhe-lnslilul London in line with the Goelhe-lnslilul London's strategic goals.
In 2020, due lo the Cowd-19 pandemic, the Goelhe-lnstilul had lo make some adjustments lo the
projects il was able lo run. The projecl"Foolball Conne¢ls" which for years had been providing
travel and educational opportunities for young people from the Greater London area with aspirations in
careers in the world of football, had lo be cancelled.
Applications for the 'Work Shadowing in Schwabisch Hall, projed had risen sharply from initially 9 in
201710 nearly 200 in 2Q20. This increase in applications is a clear indicator of the success and leach
of the programme. 11 also raised discussions amongst the Trustees of the Friends of the Goethe-
Inslilul London of how the project could be expanded lo include a larger number of participants. Due
to reslriclions imposed as a result of Covid-19, the week-long trip lo Schwabisch Hall in October 2020
had lo be cancelled. In ils place. the Goelhe-lnslilul London offered 20 successful applicants an
atternalive in the form of an online work experience by taking part in a week long podcasting project.
For four and a half hours a day the participants immersed themselves online in 8 German
environment. complemented by lectures from inspiring German speakers. Each day was dedicated lo
specific topics and podcasting workshops, Culminating in the production of 3 podcasts entitled..
S8g's Mir.. Kullur (Cullurel, Sag's Mir.. Politik (Politics) and Sag's Mir.. MINT ISTEM)
The project proved extremely successful, as could be gleaned from the feedback. As one participant pul
it. 11 was an incredible opportunity to nol only improve my German language skills, but also leam about
all asp8cls of Germany Ihrough some inspiralional G8rman laainers and native Speake￿1.
Whth the aim of Teaching a larger audience, the Goethe-lnslilul London also presented a pilot online
programme to the Friends of the Goelhe-lnslilul London.. A cooking show enlilled"Green Sauce",
where young people in both the UK and Germany were invited lo meet online. The programme was
led by influencers from both countries and encouraged cuttur81 exchange and understanding via the
plalfom of an international cooking show. The pilot show in December 2020 was allended by 30
partlclpants and attracted 4726 vlews online. Wlth further development and addltlonal
shows planned for 2021 we expect even higher numbers in the future.
To ensure the long-tem sustainability of the projects. the Goelhe-lnstilul continues lo organise annual
alumni meetings. These provide the alumni with the opportunity lo keep in touch wilh ea¢h other an
with the Friends of the Goelhe-lnslilul London. The participants are encouraged lo share their
experiences with their peers and so promote both language learning and cultural exchange.
l am sure the 150 young people, who lo dale were able lo experience life and work either abroad or in
a German speaking environment online, would agree that these projects are indeed a successful and
valuable opportunily, made possible through the support of the Friends ol the Goelhe-lnslilul London.
We remain impressed by the outcomes of the projects so far and we are convinced of their merits. The
increase in th& number of applications by far exceeded our expectations and is proof ol how far
reaching these projects have become. We hope lo increase this by offering online experiences, such
as the podcasting workshop described above. We intend lo continue to support such projects.
Promoting youth mobility and interculluial undeislanding will be even more Televanl in a posl-Brexil
Britain.
I hope these highlighted activities will reassure readers about the relevance of the Friends of the
Goelhe-lnstilul London and the importance ol ils ongoing success.

In 2020, the Charity spent funds on charitable activS1ies awarded in 2018 for proje¢ls carried out in 2019.
Payment for these projects fell due in 2020. Funds awarded in 2019 for projects lo be carried out in
2020 were not taken up, as all 2020 projects had to be cancelled as a result ol the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Charily continues to keep any administrative and governan￿ costs lo a minimum and had, for
example, no expenditure on personn¢l, remuneration or premises.11 tries lo spend as much as possible
on charitable aclivilies.
1.2. Sources of Income

The main expenditure were grants made lo the Goethe-lnslitul London. These grants were intended for
two projeds.. Work Shadowing Schwabisch Hall 2019 and Futsball VerbindeVFoolball Connects 2019,

The grants were gianled only after the other Trustee8 were satisfied that the projects mel the Charity's

thorough examination. The Articles of Association of Friends of the Goelhe-lnstilut London provide for
conflicl of interest clauses and proceedings safeguaTding the independence of the Charity.
The director of the Goelhe-lnstilul London also cannot benefit personalty from any projects the Friends
of the Goelhe-lnslitut London should decide lo support. She does not re¢eive any fee, premium. bonus
orany sort of reward forlhe Inumber ofj projects, which receive funding. She is employed by the German

The director of the Goelhe-lnstilul LonLlon in her capacity as Trustee of the Charity is obliged lo declare

Inslilut London may, where appropriate. aulhorise any conflict arising in this context. In any event, the
un4onllicled Trustees have sufficient voting power to object lo any proposed resolution which may be
perceived as questionable as far as the independence of the Charity is concerned. The Trustees are
therefore confident that any decisions with respect lo funding of the activities of Goelhe-lnslilul London
{provided Ihal such a¢livilies accord wrf£h the Charity's objects) are taken independently from any
influence from Goethe-lnslilut London.

1.5. Reserves Policy
Given the Charity's lack of fixed assets, lack of mid or long term liabilities, lack of personnel or inventory
and given ils only current as5els being cash al bank, the Trustees agree that there is no ment in
idenlifying artr optimum level of free reserves al the moment that might be readily available if required.
The Charity Is not exposed lo any probable or imminent credit, liquidity or market risks. However, the
Trustees will respond appropriately to spending needs identified as and when circumstances arise.
1.6. Risk Policy
In discharging their responsibilities for the management of risk, il is the policy of the Tfuslees to identify,
an&￿Se and seek lo manage any risks lo the ability gf the Charity tg carry out ils role effectively and
meet the obligations of its governing document.
The trustees review risk in ils broadest sense and consider anything that might alter or undermine tho
¢apa¢ily of the Charity to fulfil ils charitable objectives.

Plans for future periods
The Charity plans to grow and allracl new corporate members wtlh lies lo Germany willing to further the
Charity's objectives.
In the coming years the Charity wlshes lo strengthen the bonds created between young Brillsh slurjenls
and German students, Germany and the German language by funding alumni meetings. One aspect of
these meetings will ￿ the opportunity for the alumni lo exchange information with the Friends of the
Goelhe-lnslilul London regarding internships and future work placements.
The Charity also plans lo enable further students lo participate in such programmes. Friends of the
Goelhe-lnslilul London want to further focus on promoting youth mobility and inlercullural understanding
in the future.
Structure, governance and management
Friends of the Goelhe-lnstilut London are consliluled as a private limited company by guarantee. Its
governing document is ils Articles of Association dated 3 January 2017 amended by special resolution

Iruslees. The Trustees manage the business of the Charity and exercise all the powers of the Charity,
unless they are subject lo any reslriclions imposed by slalutory law.
The Charity's four Trustees are currently running day lo day affairs with no delegation lo a secretary or
commissions.
The Trustees are satisfied that the constilulional documents, as draft8d, provide for an appropriate
mechanism lo address any potential ¢onflicl of interest arising in this context. The Articles of Association
