RESCUE
MAIN ACTIVITIES
Paws Rescue UK (PRUK) was registered with the charity
commission in 2018 and primarily acts as a platform for Paws
Rescue Qatar (PRQ) to re-home abandoned cats and dogs from
the streets of Qatar to loving forever homes in the UK Europe,
Canada, United States and across the world and facilitate
getting them to their adoptive homes.
PRUK adoption process. A careful screening and matching
process is undertaken for all animal adoptions. All applications
are carefully reviewed, references are taken and adopter and
home checks (virtual) take place. We use our knowledge of
each animal and do our utmost to ensure that person/home
matches.
All adoptive homes are assessed on an individual basis some of
whom have been blanket turned away from mainstream
adoption charities citing reasons such as no outdoor space,
children etc. We set up chats with adopters, fosters and shelter
personnel for each adoption. We give advice to all adopters,
along with full back up, post adoption care and behaviour
nppcls advicp. In thp ijnlikplv pvpnt that thp adnntinn fails wp
will make alternative arrangements to find the right home for
that animal.
We will always try, whenever possible to ensure that each dog
or cat proposed has spent time in foster care prior to them
flying to their forever homes. Fostering plays a key part in
helping a rescued animal on its journey to a new life.
We charge an adoption fee which is used to contribute towards
the cost of rescue, veterinary costs, rehabilitation, and travel/
exporL
All our animals are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered,
microchipped. dewormed and have received a tick/flea
treatment prior to rehoming. All dogs are Cani- 4 tested for
heartworm, Lyme disease, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. All cats are

some also require to have had a rabies serology test also.
If for any reason an adoption fails PRUK will make alternative
plans to find that cat or dog another home.
TAR
March 2012

PRUK Positive Adoption Process. Sometimes an animal may
have special needs in terms of disability, health, behavioural
issues or even be a particular breed. In these cases we will
actively look for suitable adopters and organisations that
specialise in looking after them. This could be a rescue group
that cares for disabled and life ending animals. Groups that
work with animal wheelchairs or have the specialist resources
and experience to help animals with behavioural issues. For
some breeds of dogs such as working dogs, huskies we will
look for homes in northern, colder climates such as Canada and
North America or homes in rural areas.
PRUK Travel Planning. prepares and books all necessary travel
arrangements, permits, health checks and other paperwork to
facilitate the international rehoming of our cats and dogs. We
also help advise the expats of Qatar who want to repatriate
their pets what they need to have in place in order for them to
take their pets home. We also can provide a not-for-profit
repatriation service.
PRUK will take every opportunityto educate and instigate
meaningful dialogue with the Qatar ministries and important
decision makers.

PQUK also raises funds to help support the running costs of
shelter villa at Al Wukair.
Qatar is a particularly hostile place for the street cats and dogs
that live there. A desert country where temperatures regularly
reach over SO degrees Celsius with very little rain. Due to cultural
attitudes and religious beliefs, cats and particularly dogs are not
welcome and considered by many to be little more than vermin.
The transient population where over 90% are not nationals
means that large numbers of animals are abandoned when
people leave the country. Starving, diseased, poisoned, beaten,
shot, intentionally targeted by driving cars, abused, and rounded
up only to be dumped in the desert to die an agonising death is
the lot for these poor creatures in their short lives. Although a
law against animal cruelty exists its enforcement is non-existenL
The breeding and sale of animals in Qatar is a huge problem.
Animals are sold in an animal market in Souq Waqif diseased
and kept in the cruellest conditions. Despite public outrage and
a huge public petition this animal market still exists. Backstreet
breeding and sale of animals is rife in Qatar with no penalties or
animal welfare enforcement
The Big Move
On the 31st of October 2021 we received the devastating news
that Paws Rescue Qatar were to be evicted from their custom
built shelter in Mesaieed. Qatar citing municipality use of land
for farming only as the reason. Initially 3 months notice to the
end of Jan 2022 this was later extended to 6 months until the
end ofApril 2022. And so began the huge undertaking of
re￿1￿￿11 iy aa rriali y vi i eaideii ueiore t￿le mok'e and
securing suitable premises for Paws Rescue to continue in an
albeit smaller scale. It was an almost impossible task to find
somewhere suitable and affordable but eventually a building
was found it would of course need lots of adaptations to make it
cat and doq safe. It was a massive and dauntinq undertakinq
none of this would have been possible without all who helped us
big and small to financially secure a new home and the
volunteers who helped clean and make ready for our beloved
rescues and help move all the cats and dogs and equipment to
the new premises .

Hello Paws Villa
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)Ban on
Dogs entering the Canada from Qatar
In July 2022 while we were still reeling from the ban imposed on
dogs entering the US from Qatar the previous year. CFIA in
Canada announced a ban on all commercial dogs imported
from Qatar (as well as over120 countries) This ban was effective
from 28 September 2022. PRUK and PRQ worked flat out to get
as many of our dogs as possible to Canada before the ban took

| We also enabled over 108 dogs that were from other
rescues to get to Canada before the ban became effective.
Trap Neuter and Release
PRUK along with PRQ manages a number ofTNR (frap, Neuter
and Release) colonies in Qatar. With the help of volunteers these
colonies of cats and dogs are fed, watered, spayedand neutered
and receive veterinary care if needed. Whenever possible and
with shelter space and funds allowing some of these animals are
taken into the shelter, prepared for travel and rehomed. By far
the largest and one of the longest existing of these managed
colonies is the Sailiya dog colony in the district of Al Rayyan 13
miles south-west of Doha.
Life Animal Rescue
Following our eviction notice we were extremely grateful to
receive a one off grant of £11526 from Life Animal Rescue in the
USA. They are huge advocates for animals worldwide. That and
one grant of $10,000 (£7303.50) from the SPCA'S International
Shelter Support Fund received at the end of the previous
financial year meant we were able to secure new premises and
funds allowing some of these animals are taken into the shelter,
prepared for travel. Our friends too at the Military Base in Qatar
clubbed together to make up for the shortfall.
A huge huge thankyou from all at Paws Rescue four legged and
two (and few three legged also).

Hoarder Cats
In October 2022 we had several desperate requests from a man
that wanted us to help him with almostlOO cats. He was the
most difficult mix... a man who had mental health problems who
hoarded cats and a man who sold the kittens ofthose cats to
support them and himself.
With lockdown came disaster as there was no market for his
kittens and they bred and bred until they were filling every
corner.
As difficult as it was, we decided we couldn't allow those cats to
suffer. We started to provide food and litter and vet care for cats
in his care as well as taking cats whenever we had space...
despite begging other rescues for help, nobody came forward so
we were responsible for taking all of the cats. This in itself was
difficult as he didn't want to give any of them up. First we were
able to take all the young toms, but all the females he wanted to
keep in case they were pregnant. The conditions were
horrendous and the kittens were dying just as soon as they were
ofweaning age. But we had to persevere, and eventually by
March 2023 we had taken a lot of the females and the remaining
cats were some pregnant females and his breeding toms. By this
point all his power and water had been cut off. As the weather
became hotter the one-bed apartment was full of cockroaches,
it was a terrible place. By June 23 we were able to take all the
remaining cats.

World Cup
Qatar played host to the 2022 World Cup. We were made aware
that the authorities had undertaken a huge "clean up.
campaign of cats and dogs on the streets. Some long-
established colonies of fed, neutered and cared for cats
disappeared completely. Thousands of dogs and cats removed
and dealt with like rubbish on the streets.
We were approached by visitors who were desperate to help
cats and dogs they found on the street injured, starving and
alone.
Habibi was one, a small puppy living alone on the streets. His
rescuer reached out to Paws who kept Habibi safe and prepare d
him for travel till he was finally able to be sent to the UK and
reunited with his rescuer.
Three kittens Lily, Smudge and Moxie were also kept safe and
prepared for travel to the Connecticut in the US where adoptive
forever homes were found for all three together by their
rescuers.

t)aws Foster Families
Fostering is a wonderful way to help our animals on their
journey to their happy ever after. These temporary loving homes
have multiple benefits for cats and dogs. It can be a place where
a dog or cat can recuperate from a trauma or medical
procedure. It helps them acclimatise to a home life and can
make them more adoptable. It frees up shelter space meaning
another dog or cat can be rescued.

In Nov 2022 volunteers in Doha were alerted that a small pack of
cared for dogs were being gunned down. Words cannot
describe the horrific scene that they found. Amongst the dead
bodies of some of his former pack lay Baloo. Lying in a pool of
blood it was thought he was dead until someone spotted his
eyes moving. Luckly the vets was only mins away they gathered
him up and rushed him there.
Dr Catrinina working hard to save Baloo's life.
Miraculously he made it through the night. Slowly, slowly he got
better but what he really needed was a foster home where he
could continue his recouperation.
Danni a young teacher in Doha came to the recue and swept
him up (not easy he's a big chap) and took him home.
Fast forward a few months and Danni's mum like the rest of us
had fallen under Baloo's spell and wanted to adopt him. A

Baloo the Brave
A few words from Danni
Thisyear has unfolded as a profoundly transformative journey
for me with Paws Rescue UK, particularly through my fostering
experience with the remarkably brave dog named Baloo. Baloo
faced the unimaginable in Qatar, having been shot and
severely injured. Fostering Baloo during his slow and painful
recovery became more than a commitment,. it was a profound
and life-changing experience that touched the very core of my

distressed soul to a happy, healthy pet was nothing short of
rrliraculous. The fostering process not only mended Baloo's
wounds and reignited his vitality for life but also left an indelible
mark on my heart. The decision for my mum to odopt Baloo
solidified the personal connection we had with this incredible
creature. Fostering, as I discovered, is notjust about providing
care,. it's about healing and building lasting bonds. Paws
Rescue UK'S exceptional efforts to help animals in" need have
made thisjourney possible, emphasising the profound impact
we can have on the lives of these deserving creatures. Special
thanks to Yvonne from Paws Rescue Qatar for her amazing
assistance and support throughout this incredible journey.

In memory of a special lady
We are very sad to say that our wonderful cat lady Marion James
passed away. Marion has been working with Paws UK since it's
very inception, even before Paws UK existed-she worked
tirelessly with us on the UK-side of our operation, helping to
bring cats to the UK firstly through a partner organisation and
latterly through Paws Rescue UK. She was a trustee of our UK
charity, and has adopted many cats from Qatar herself. In fact
she fell in love with so many cats we had to start doing direct
adoptions from Qatar... or Marion and John would have ended
up keeping them all
Marion has home-checked many, many people so you may have
met her along the way ifyou have adopted a cat from us.
Always generous and kind, Marion had special powers for
spotting the chancers (and also for spotting the good eggs)! She
was always upbeat, and helped with home checks even from
hospital.
There will be a big paw-shaped hole where Marion has always
been; we will miss her tremendously and she will always be in
our thoughts and hearts.
Rest in peace Marion, lots of lovely kitties up there to keep you
company.
