THOMAS PLUME'S LIBRARY Registered Charity No 1179957 TRUSTEES, ANNUAL REPORT For the period I" April 2023 to 31" March 2024 ObSectives and activltle5 The objects of the charily, in accordance with the will of Thomas Plume who died on 20, November 1704. are to preserve and maintain The Plume Library and its contents. and to make them publbcly available for ihe benefit of scholars and the wider local community. The Library, which contains some lo,0￿ vol¥Jmes from Dr Plume's peisonal collection and later acquisitions, is housed on the upper floor of ihe original building. now owned by Maldon Town Council. 11 is open to the public on four separate occasions each week, and at other times as appropriate. The Trustees employ a librarian and support staff to manage the library. lo oversee the continuing conservation work. and to supervise public access lo the collection. The staff also support the various activitie5 of the Trustees and ihe Friends of Thomas Pluffle's Library as appropriate. The online catalogue of books beqL¢eathed by Thomas Plume was fiisi publishe(l in 2(L)9 and 2011 saw the 3ddilion to the online catalogue of rhe p05t-Plume collection and the first phase of the Manuscript and Archive Catalogues. In February 2019 the project to COnse￿e and cataloBue the Library's archwe was completed. The Friends ol Thomas Plume's Library continue to gNe their generous support to our aciivities. Nine missing books were purchased Iwith additional funding from ihe Friends of the National Libraries), and a Frien or8anised the design and supply of Christmas cards to support Library funds. Volunteers from the Blackwater Arts Society continue to make an invaluable conrribution to the Book Shoe Projeci. stocktakiriE, and cleaning the collection. A project to conserve Plume's colleciion of oil paintin85 Started in 2023, wilh total giant funding of £5.500 having been received so far from ihe Essex Communiiy Fund and Essex Heritage Trusi. Two ot the paintings have been succe55fully conserved and are wailing for their frames to be ￿fitted. Two silver gilt frames have been repaired and resiored by The City and Guilds London Art School. and two ftsrther joiners frames are curfenlly being worked on. The lecturer is using Ihe restoratiori of the frames to teach sludenis about historic framing. Further grani funding is being sought foi further conservation work on the painiings. A Fundraising Working Party has been set UP, lo explore and develop additional revenue streams for the Libfary. Grant funding w35 applied for and received from the Adrian Swire Charitable Trusi IE5,LXIOI and the Fowler. Smith and Jones TrUsi1£3,C￿l. Other inilialives, including a Regular Givin8 Scheme. will be pul in place in the coming year. In planning theif activities for the year ihe Trustee5 kept in mind the Charity Commission's guidance on public benelil at their meetiriES.

Risk Management The Trustees review annually the major risks that the charity faces. and have established systems to avoid or miligate such risks. Structure and Governance Thomas Plume's Library is governed by a Constitulion registered with the Charity commission on 17, September 2018. This Trust commenced operation on I" April 2019 when it acquired by Vestin8 Deed from the Thomas Plume's Library Trust Charity No 310661 all the assets of the that trust. The Principal of the Plume Academy. Maldon. lor the time being shall automatically l-ex officio") be a chaflty trustee. for as long 35 he or she hold5 that office. Essex County Council, Maldon Oistrict Council. Maldon Town Council and the Parochial Chuich Council of ihe Parish of All Saints wilh Sl Peler may each appoint one charity trustee. The total of our unrestricied General Funds and therefore free reserves as at 31" March 2024 was £726,967. The Library contents. and freehold ènd leasehold property, are Classified as a55ets of Permanent Endowmeni Fund, following the wishe5 of Thomas Plume as expressed in his Will. This Fund was valued 31 £4.078.846 at the year end.

Reserves Polity - the Trustees consider that the toial cash held in current and deposit accounts of £48,6S6 provides an adequate reseNe of funds should there be an unexpected shortfall of income or increase in expenditure. Restricted Funds- the movement5 Iri these Fursd5 showing their funding sources and expenditures are shown in Note 14.1 lo the Financial Statements. Fixed As5etS The Trust holds long-term investments held in funds which are reviewed annually with advice from an Independent Financial Advisor. These investmeni funds were valued at £672.249 ol our financial year end. The value of these investments increased by £27.990 during the year. The contents of the Library are included in ihe Balance Sheei as a Heriiage Asset valued at their insured figure of E4,076,846, unchanged from rhe prioi year.
