Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 31[st] March 2025

Summary

Hope Animal Shelter registered as a charity on 17th September 2018, operating in the North East. The purpose of the charity is to provide care, protection, medical treatment and security for animals in need. In addition to this, both temporary and permanent shelter is offered to animals until new homes have been found.

Public Benefit

Hope Animal Shelter seeks to educate the public to promote responsible attitudes towards animals and prevent cruelty and suffering towards them. These objectives will help educate the public in the North East, to reduce the numbers of abandoned animals. Hope Animal Shelter also aims to rehome as many animals as possible. All prospective owners are thoroughly checked with home visits and a donation fee. On-going support is also available where required.

The Trustees of Hope Animal Shelter are satisfied that they have fully complied with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Volunteers

During 2024/2045 although Hope Animal Shelter volunteer numbers remained constant, they supported and cared for a larger than normal number of abandoned, pregnant and family cats requiring admission. The Trustees would like to thank Cliff and the amazing volunteers who put in so much time and effort making sure that all the animals and birds are safe and happy. Hope Animal Shelter depends on the financial and material support provided by our many supporters, both individuals and businesses, which allowed the volunteers to support the many and diverse groups of animals in our care. The Trustees acknowledge the significant contribution made by them.

During this year the shelter has seen almost 100% increase in the number of supporters setting up monthly contributions through our new bank account. Thank you to everyone who continues to support us in this way. We must also thank those fantastic supporters who have continued to fundraise throughout the year. Our thanks go Carol, Margaret and Yvonne who have raised £1629.36 through their various car boot sales and tombola’s. Leonie Craggs who raised £1400 through online sales and J and M Dawes who gave a generous donation of £715. Other activities included clothes sales, no chocolate January, plant sales, and Joy’s and Cliff’s birthday donation. We would also like to thank The Station Pub (£700), Pips Cafe (£240), Soup and a bun night (£200.55) and Vicky who raised £2226.50 through various online activities. We also received bequests on behalf of Mr Wallace, J Shaw, S Rouse, Mr Fulcher and in memory of Jacky, and donations from Skelton Church and St. Helens Church.

As the cost of animal food and cat litter continues to rise we have been delighted with the public response when stocks were running low and who continue give help through our food donation points. Thank you again for your help and to the businesses who allow us to keep our donation baskets on your premises.

Reserves

Hope Animal Shelter is a not-for-profit organisation, but the Charity intends to retain reserves to ensure financial security. Reserves will be used to improve facilities where necessary.

Main Achievements

Site development during 2024/2025:

The boundary bordering the river has again been affected by the heavy rain and flooding. This work on shoring up the banks will continue into the next financial year.
We have erected a large wooden shed to house young turkeys, chickens and wild birds, until they are old enough to go out with the adults.
A fox area has been created with climbing platforms and greenery for the resident foxes.

The trustees are looking to acquire metal containers to act as storage and improve site security by becoming part of the boundary. The site will need clearing and levelling and it is hoped to carry this work out during 2025/26, if funds allow.

Hope Animal Shelter rehomed 202 animals over the year, a 5% increase on last year. The table below highlights the increase in the number of kittens rehomed (80) through the shelter, compared to last year (55). Although we took in fewer adult cats, more were pregnant or had litters of very young kittens when admitted.

The trustees would like to thank Yvonne for her Stirling work in home checking and rehoming dogs and cats and also Sarah and Kathleen, who have excelled at cat rehoming.

Financial Review

Hope Animal Shelter has prepared the accounts using the receipts and payments method. Income continues to exceed expenses, therefore has no uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern.

The shelter does not employ any staff, so all money raised goes towards the upkeep of the site and the welfare of the animals.

Structure, Governance and Management

Hope Animal Shelter is run by charity trustees and is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

There have been no changes to the charity trustees, but policies would be provided to any new trustees on election in future periods.
