Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 31[st] March 2021
Summary
Hope Animal Shelter registered as a charity on 17th September 2018, operating in the North East. The purpose of the charity is to provide care, protection, medical treatment and security for animals in need. In addition to this, both temporary and permanent shelter is offered to animals until new homes have been found.
Public Benefit
Hope Animal Shelter seeks to educate the public to promote responsible attitudes towards animals and prevent cruelty and suffering towards them. These objectives will help educate the public in the North East, to reduce the numbers of abandoned animals. Hope Animal Shelter also aims to rehome as many animals as possible. All prospective owners are thoroughly checked with home visits and a donation fee. On-going support is also available where required.
The Trustees of Hope Animal Shelter are satisfied that they have fully complied with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.
Volunteers
The Covid 19 outbreak has made life particularly difficult for everyone in the country and the Trustee’s would like to praise the efforts of Cliff and the volunteers who have kept the shelter running under these strained circumstances.
Despite the hardship suffered by Covid 19, the supporters of Hope Animal Shelter have continued to provide financial and material support. The trustees acknowledge the significant contribution made by the volunteers. This year the fundraising activities were hampered by Covid 19, but our supporters have still manged to raise funds in ingenious ways including; online cake raffles, afternoon teas, car boot sales, sale of face masks, no chocolate for a month sponsorship, mother’s day raffles, sale of canvases, sale of Christmas wreaths and a purple poppy appeal.
Hope Animal Shelter has also continued to receive donations via our online JustGiving page which has been the biggest source of income during the year, contributing towards 29% of the total income.
The shelter has also been supported by local businesses and three large supermarkets in the local area.
Reserves
Hope Animal Shelter is a not for profit organisation, but the Charity intends to retain reserves to ensure financial security. Reserves will be used to improve facilities where necessary.
Main Achievements
The shelter has continued to rehome where circumstances allowed for this during the crisis by putting in place health and safety measures, including face masks, hygiene facilities and social distancing for both volunteers and visitors.
The site development has been hindered due to Covid 19 thus new projects have had to be postponed, but attention has been focused on safety and repair around the shelter;
-
Following the theft of a kitten, the gate to the main entrance was strengthened
-
The donkey shed was partially re-roofed
-
Improvements were made to the terrapin pond
-
Foundations were laid for a small animal enclosure
-
Improvements were made to the enclosures for Chickens and Turkeys in accordance with DEFRA guidelines following the Avian Flu outbreak.
A record of rehoming statistics can be seen below for the year ended 31[st] March 2021: Hope Animal Shelter rehomed 206 animals over the year despite the Covid 19 outbreak. The shelter has also been involved in spaying and neutering feral cats and kittens.

Financial Review
Hope Animal Shelter has prepared the accounts using the receipts and payments method. Income continues to exceed expenses, therefore has no uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern.
The shelter does not employ any staff, so all money raised goes towards the upkeep of the site and the welfare of the animals.
Structure, Governance and Management
Hope Animal Shelter is run by charity trustees and is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
There have been no changes to the charity trustees, but policies would be provided to any new trustees on election in future periods.
