Chairperson’s Report
Welcome and thank you for taking time to read our latest annual report.
2019 – 2020 has been a rollercoaster year for WAVES Additional Needs Support, what with the fabulous winter period we had – our annual residential at Rock UK in the Scottish Borders, Halloween, Remembrance Day preparations, Boxing challenges, Christmas and then Covid 19 hit the world. Whilst, initially, we needed to stop all physical contact and subsequently suspend WAVES weekly sessions, this did not stop us continuing to give support/advice and continued friendship. Weekly challenges were set up for the kids as well as the adults which allowed us all to recognise the importance WAVES has on all our families. Thank goodness for technology at that time.
We received some very positive news when we secured enough funding to buy our very own minibus. This was very much down to The Clothworkers Foundation who granted us a large sum of money to make this possible. Vic Young Garage then took our hands and found a fantastic bus to meet our needs. Vic also reduced the amount of the vehicle, paid for the signage and offered a very attractive warranty.
Come July restrictions were reducing, and we were seeing light at the end of the tunnel. We looked to re-open WAVES in September 2020. Excitement hit, organisation to ensure we were Covid secure got underway and two fantastic evening events took place for the children.
On returning to WAVES in September!!!!!!!! ……….. Well, that DID NOT happen. The second wave of Covid-19 hit, and local restrictions would not allow this.
A motto I like to share is – ‘look for the solutions NOT at the problems’ – and that is what we did.
-
We secured funding to increase the touch therapy sessions by Kim. Along with the touch therapy she was able to offer age-appropriate wellbeing sessions (Relax Kids) which was very much needed. It is due to the generosity of Escape Intervention Services that many of our sessions have taken place in their ‘very relaxing’ therapy room. Escape have also offered parents/carers wellbeing sessions which are currently ongoing. We look forward to continuing to work alongside Escape once restrictions relax.
-
We organised 2 Paddle ability sessions with LASP Adventures which was enjoyed by all. Louis and Stu are looking to offer something very special in the future – watch this space!!!!
-
Covid secure Williby Roc’s sessions were commenced and are hoped to be a regular activity on a Saturday when we do re-open.
-
The selling page and shop re-opened in order to raise vital funds for future activities.
Page 02
It was a great disappointment not to be able to attend our annual residential weekend, however, this has been rearranged for March 2021 and something to look forward to. We are returning to The Calvert Trust in Kielder.
Whilst 2020 was a strange and frustrating year we will just put that to one side and focus on the future. I personally would like to give my heartfelt thanks to:
-
The Committee – The committee work so hard at WAVES, at events and behind the scenes. WAVES would not be in existence without these selfless and committed individuals. Thank you.
-
Volunteers – The committee welcome the support and help from our dedicated volunteers at WAVES itself and other activities offered. Just prior to lockdown we took on another 4 volunteers and currently have 17. Thank you.
-
Outside Funders – We are a non-profit charity and whilst we personally fundraise throughout the year, WAVES would not have had the opportunities they have without the generosity of funding organisations. A special thanks must go to our regular funders – The National Lottery, The Community Foundation, BBC Children in Need, Barbour’s, Hadrian Trust, Sir James Knott Trust, as well as new funders such as The Clothworkers Foundation, Vic Young, The Police VRU, The Masons, The Rothley Trust, John D Endowment Fund.
-
WAVES Families – We have been astounded by the number of families we have coming through our door week by week. As of August 2019, we have over 500 members which demonstrates the need of support in our community.
Thank you to all that have attended, supported and have had faith in our group – roll on year 4.

Quote from Waves Patron Ray Spencer MBE
“Waves staff are a great example of hardworking volunteers coming together to form a terrific self-help group to support children with additional needs and their families. In these days of austerity, it has never been more important to support such groups who do so much for the vulnerable members of our community. Their drive and determination to do their very best for our ‘bairns’ is to be commended. In life we can either make Waves or calm troubled waters; they do both making sure their voice is heard and causes championed while giving their members a place in which to belong… I am honoured to have been asked to become their Patron”.

Waves - What We Do
WAVES Additional Needs Support Group was established in September 2017 by parents who have children with additional needs to provide a safe and non-judgemental environment for their own and other families facing the many difficulties families face both in the educational and health sectors. Due to staff having personal experience of these difficulties, they can offer a real and empathic approach to the families and carers attending. This informal support is often desperately needed and this is evidenced in the numbers attending on a weekly basis. These families often face judgement and criticism by the public who find it difficult to understand the needs of these families and children. We are a volunteer led service and rely solely on self-funding to continue to sustain this non-profit organisation. Initially we hired ‘a room’ in a community building, however due to the need, our membership quickly rose and currently stands at 500 members. We have, on average, 100+ attending on a weekly basis. Due to this we needed to expand and we now rent the full building and outdoor area for 4 hours on a Saturday. We offer lots of activities such as:
-
Indoor and Outdoor sports
-
• Scooters Bikes • Hair and Beauty • Craft and Cookery
-
Social and emotional resilience enhancing activities
-
Touch Therapy/Mindfulness/Relax Kids
-
Swimming sessions
-
Training for teenagers/young adults/parents/carers
-
• Parent/Carer Therapy
We offer (if able to secure funding) day trips and outings in the school holidays such as going to the beach, local BBQ event, camping, places of interest in order that the families can spend time together with additional support. Without this support these activities are difficult, if not impossible, for our families to access.
-
Engaging in mainstream activities
-
• Social interaction
-
Gaining and maintaining positive friendships
-
Maintaining positive self-esteem
-
Regulating emotions and self-control
-
Maintaining positive relationships with parents, siblings and other family members
-
Having the independence children of average development have
-
Academic achievements within the school setting
-
Bullying
-
Being judged by the general public
-
As well as a number of other struggles children of appropriate development would not encounter.
Page 06
We fully support the siblings within these families as they often need to take a back seat due to their siblings’ needs/difficulties which can lead to emotional difficulties as well as a feeling of ‘second best’ which is obviously not the case.
Due to the number of medical and academic appointments, the parents/carers find it difficult to find suitable employment which will be flexible to their needs. Many of our families are unemployed and needing to rely on benefits. This also makes day-to-day life even more difficult, which can cause stress and anxiety for the parents/carers.
We are often classed as family by families attending – below are just a couple of quotes they have made:
'WAVES is not just a group - it's family, a place where my shy, withdrawn teenager becomes himself around many fantastic role models'
'WAVES has helped me understand so much more about my child's additional needs'
'WAVES has been my lifeline'.

Fundraising and Events
Waves teamed up with Williby Rocs for some fantastic events over the autumn/winter months in 2019 below are some of the sessions the children took part in:
Halloween
The older children got to make Halloween wreaths and wood cookie spiders, the children were able to use drills, nails and other materials, it was a great day seeing the children get involved and try out their skills in a safe environment
The younger children came dressed to their session in Halloween costumes and they made witches brooms.
Autumn Days
The older children learnt how to make their own prints using earth pigments with a pestle and mortar and were able to use tools such as drills to make a wood frame to put flowers in.
The younger children learnt how to make handmade bird feeders and snowy owls. The children then each had a try at cutting wood for the campfire at the end which they enjoyed with hot cocoa and cookies.
Christmas
For the Christmas session the children used tools and wood to make reindeers, these were brilliant, and the children were very proud of their creations.
Page 08
As well as the Williby Sessions Waves put on some events for the children which included:
Neon Party
Events team put on a neon party for the younger children to enjoy, this was a brilliant night, the children designed their own neon t-shirts, and there was face painting, raffles, games and disco! Lots of fun was had by all.
Teen Night
The older children enjoyed a night out at the bowling alley where they had 2 games of bowling and pizza! This was extra special as lots of our children miss out on being able to hand with friends on an evening due to its challenges for them. They had a brilliant evening.
Family Night
Our Family Night was huge success. We held 2 Quizzes, 1 for children only and the other for everyone of all ages. We held a raffle and prizes were equal number of girls and boys, with a couple hid just in case, there was also a huge family hamper to be won. We served a choice of curry and rice or hotdogs. Bingo was a huge hit with everyone and afterwards we had a visit from our mascot “Splash” and his friend, “Mr. Blobby” which is when the children and some adults had their photos taken. The night was a huge success.

Darren Bell is our I.T. Coordinator. He maintains the WAVES Additional Needs Support Group website (www. waves-support-group.com). Sports Coordinator
Simon Tate is the sports coordinator his role within the committee of WAVES is to organise the running of sports and activities and to ensure the safety of our members whilst doing this.
We have tried to do a range of activities for the children and young adults and even some of the parents too to get involved with, some of the activities are: -
Football - lots of the children already have a love for playing football and with the facilities having football goals already on the primacies it is perfect to arrange matches and to have them supervised trying to encourage some of the more introvert kids to get involved and enjoy being part of a big group.
Rounders - some of the kids had never played this but all seem to of taken a like to it, we try to involve as many of the members to get involved, games like this can be challenging for some but we feel it really helps them with their motor skills and they are always given help if needed.
Dodgeball - this game is used with soft foam balls to ensure the safety of the kids, kids from all ages up to the parents enjoy getting stuck in with this and rally gets the kids working on their coordination and motor skills too.
Pool/Killer pool - this is a big hit at waves and a lot of the children and adults get involved with this one, once again in works on had to eye coordination and with a lot of our members appreciating a bit of healthy competition setting up tournaments and matches is something they really enjoy whether it’s them playing or watching other members whilst playing.
Kickboxing/boxing - this was a little different to some of the other activities as some of the kids may not have tried doing anything like this before but was a great opportunity for them to try it and see if they’d enjoy it whilst being in a controlled environment.
Page 15
Selling Page/Shop
Waves has a selling page where we have many dedicated people who work not only in the shop but who also upload from home, they all work on a volunteer basis and do this in their own time. All money made from the sale of donated items gets distributed back to Waves and is spent on equipment, supplies and fun activities for the kids in the group. This year has been a busy one with running the shop, managing the home uploaders and delivering, we have also held some competitions for not only shop and home uploaders but also for the customers, we have held container sales and page sales in order to raise funds for the group. This financial year the shop and page have made over £10,000 pound which has been a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.
Page 16
Residential Weekends
Waves had a booking for March 2020 to go to Kielder’s Calvert Trust, unfortunately this was cancelled due to Covid 19. We are hoping to make this trip in 2021.
Page 17
Waves Minibus
The highlight of this year for waves was receiving funding to purchase our very own waves 16-seater minibus.
This will help reduce the cost of travel for our members for outing and activities such as paddle ability, summer trips etc. As well as waves being able to organise more group activities on evenings and school holidays for the kids especially for those without their own transport.
Page 18
Covid 19
Sadly, our year was cut short, in March 2020 waves had to close its doors to our members due the national pandemic (COVID19)
This was a very difficult time for all, but we tried our best to support our members remotely and were always still only a touch of a button away, during this awful period waves still providing ongoing to support to our families via telephone and zoom calls. Lots of interaction through our Facebook group. These included:
-
Uploading weekly challenges/arts and craft activities/exercises
-
Weekly zoom chats
-
Weekly Kids and Adult quizzes
-
Themed paint your window displays
During easter when restrictions allowed it our event team delivered over 60 easter eggs leaving them on the wall for the children to collect.
Throughout lockdown the children were having to isolate so the committee agreed to purchase items for the children to make up some “isolation packs” to help ease the boredom. We spend £70 on various things such as cooking items, craft items, books, toys, makeup ect. Each pack contained 6 different items suited to age. The children were very pleased when they received these.

We also launched our own charity shop after the success of our online selling.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to • examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act),
