Training of new incoming officers is provided by Lions Club International District at start of each new term.

Southwold (Sole Bay) Lions Club is a member club of the International association of Lions Clubs through Lions Club International.

The membership of the Club has remained at 13 during the period of this report. However, as previously reported most members are of advanced years it is a risk that unless new members can be found the Club may suffer as current members are able to do less. Two members have since declared being ‘ At Large’ (Lions terminology for a member who remains on the books but not actually active).

Difficulties are ongoing recruiting new members from the declining population of the town and surrounding areas Further attempts are being made to engage with potential members via social media and the Club website.

Southwold (Sole Bay) Lions Club members were founder members of the Henham Steam Rally in 1974 and the Club has had an association with the event since then. It has been a major fund raiser for the Club. Following a request from the Rally for the Club to give a 5 year commitment to provide volunteers, which members felt unable to give, members voted to withdraw from the organisation and to secure the Club share of any surplus funds, with an offer to continue to provide as many volunteers as possible. Subsequently, and contrary to earlier indications, the offer of volunteers has not been accepted, but the withdrawal process is ongoing, aiming to secure the Club’s share of surplus funds. This is currently delayed awaiting the outcome of an ongoing claim by a member of the public against the Henham Steam Rally Company as a result of damage to a Steam engine. Once this has been resolved the amount of the fund available to be returned to Southwold Lions will be known and is expected early next year.
