The year 2023 was one of transition, following the death of Ruth Sutton, founder and leading light of the Trust, in November 2023. The final completion of Pendle Young Musicians Bursary (PYMB) was held in March 2023. Following this, the Trustees decided that a change of direction was needed. The aims of the PYMB and the Ruth Sutton Trust For Music (RSTFM) were always for the benefit of the local area, particularly Pendle, and it was thought that the PYMB competitors had drifted away from this and were not contributing to musical life in Pendle.
Therefore in October 2023 RSTFM joined with Manchester Camerata to launch the CAMERATA 360 RUTH SUTTON FELLOWSHIP which offered five recently graduating northern based musicians a yearlong paid training programme giving hands-on work experience and training across all its community, outreach performance and creative endeavours. Based in the Pendle area, the Fellowship is designed to train the next generation of musicians and help them develop their skills and gain experience.
The programme is funded by a £50,000 annual sponsorship from RSTFM to Manchester Camerata who are responsible , along with the RSTFM trustees for the selection of the fellows and the running and oversight of the scheme. The trustees are delighted to report that the first tranche of Fellows (Oct 2023 -2024) exceeded their expectations and threw themselves wholeheartedly into the scheme, enhancing the musical life of our area from schools, amateur musical groups, hospice and dementia care with great enthusiasm, using their musical expertise and personality to bring music alive.
The second tranche (Oct 2024 onwards) have also been an outstanding success and the scheme is scheduled to continue for a further 3 years.

We, the trustees of RSTFM, feel that this fellowship scheme is a fitting tribute to Ruth Sutton who, we are sure would be excited at what lies ahead.
The funding of the RSTFM was replenished during the year by a legacy of £110,000 from the estate of Ruth Sutton. This should ensure the ongoing financial health of the trust and its commitment to the 360 Fellowship.
