## **Overview**

A difficult year in terms of the impact of COVID on the delivery and fundraising for the Foundation.

Grants we could apply for were limited for COVID related projects and shielding meant access to young people was difficult for both the WMF and the schools. We did apply for a lottery grant to launch The Will Mills Centre, but this was rejected as a capital project and not permitted under COVID rules.

The WMF successfully bid for a £400 Neighbourly Fund bid. This was provided to the ‘Bewdley In Kind’ COVID Support Gr oup in order to provide PPE and stock a food bank to be available for young people with Wyre Forest who were in need due to the COVID pandemic.

Our aims for the year were:

1. To open The William Mills Centre, as a legacy to Will and a location from which to deliver and extend our charitable work

2. To increase our activity with young people once COVID-19 allows

3. To increase donations via standing order

4. To increase the diversity and number of our volunteer trustees

5. To reinstate our fundraising events once COVID-19 allows.

In terms of **objectives 2 and 5** , I don’t think anyone could have predicted that the impact would be so long-lasting. In any event, these became difficult, although we adapted our provision by extending The Mindful Tribe and volunteers did deliver some remote fundraising activity.

We very nearly achieved **objective 1** and hope to achieve this by October 2021. We acknowledge the kind assistance and donations by Matthews Construction. Without the enthusiasm and commitment of Rob Matthews this journey would have been harder still.

COVID-19 restrictions did slow this process down. However, the main obstacle was the County Council reluctance to engage and their very slow processes. We acknowledge this as a future risk to our achievement and development of our provision.

We achieved **objective 3.** Our donations via standing order increased by over 100%, resulting in an average of £341 pcm. This meant our running costs, The Mindful Tribe and the awards made were paid for, with an increase in £300 cash in the bank over the whole year.

We supported two applications for awards during this period but were sadly unable to deliver the Future Steps Programme due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We continued to provide the Facebook page, The Mindful Tribe Wyre Forest, to – support 11 18-year-olds across the Wyre Forest with yoga, mindfulness and emotional well-being. See Appendix A: Activities, Services and Projects delivered for details.

Our volunteers have continued to show wonderful support in undertaking individual events and increasing donations. In addition, we have kept our running costs as low as last year’s levels.

This allows us to end the year in a healthy financial position for a charity of our size and longevity, and confident that we will remain resilient and able to operate in the years ahead and in a post-COVID-19 environment.

We achieved **objective 4** and were delighted to welcome Jack Tillett and Cameron Taylor as trustees to the WMF. In doing so we acknowledged advice from the Charity Commission in reflecting diversity within our committee by enrolling two men in their 20’s. Jack and Cameron have already made impact in terms of fund raising and suggestions for future events.

## **The Mindful Tribe Wyre Forest**

The Mindful Tribe page has been up and running since April 1st. We have 42 members on the page. They receive a live zoom yoga session every week. All members can access every session numerous times, as well as on the live session as they are kept posted on the page. We have dip sampled the sessions and they have built wonderfully from beginners to really different styles. The yoga instructor is patient and gives modifications all the way through. The members tend to be shy to engage but are definitely using the resources.

In addition to the live sessions we also posted:

- Introduction Video

- Beginners Yoga Video,

- Learn to Relax reading,

- Why Yoga (intro)

- Introduction to Pranayama, Meditation/Relaxation

- Square Breathing

- Daily challenges (Self-Esteem)

- Bonus Video: Crow Pose

- Guided Meditation (Chakra Balancing)

- Vinyasa with a Twist

- Full Body relaxation

- Stand Tall Mini Yoga Flows

- Monthly Affirmation

I have sought feedback from the members and received the below comment, notably from parents:

"My daughters & wife have done the sessions together each week - lots of giggles & creaking joints, but they have enjoyed working together! Thank you for this opportunity."

"Hi, my daughter completed the box breathing yoga class to help with anxiety. She has used the method that this class taught several times to help control her worries and to help her stay calm when she has started to panic. It has been super useful and is something I know she will continue to use throughout her life. Thank you x”

We intend keeping this Facebook during COVID-19, so into our next financial year, as we have limited means in which we can actively support young people with face-to-face sessions.

**Future Steps Awards** are made to individual young people. These awards are made upon recommendation for young people who have potential shown in relation to a particular skill or life skill, but something within their life presents a barrier to their development or achievement. Generally, these awards are up to £250.

We have made two awards, relevant to this annual report since July 2020. The awards made have allowed one young person to:

- Buy equipment to support enrolment at Birmingham Ormiston Academy for digital, Creative and Performing Arts.

Page **8** of **17**

Trustees’ Annual Report 20 21 The William Mills Foundation

Registered Charity No. 1179790

- Provided PPE and food for a Food Bank in Wyre Forest to support families with COVID.

Each young person awarded has some barrier or difficulty. Some of these are physical, some emotional and some practical. They may be caused by illness, disability, family breakdown or bereavement, for example. We use the knowledge and expertise of school staff to nominate young people for our awards.

We evaluate the effectiveness of our awards by asking the young people what they think they will achieve and why this will help them in their future life. We then set timelines for this feedback. The young people are then also seen and spoken to at some point during their award pathway by trustees from The WMF to assess progress towards these goals.

The **Future Steps Programme** did not operate in FY2020-2021.

## **The Will Mills Centre:**

We have worked with Bewdley School throughout 2020 and 2021 to finally manage to agree a 25-year lease with Worcestershire County Council for the youth centre attached to Bewdley Leisure Centre, Stourport Road, Bewdley.

Whilst we had hoped to complete refurbishment and have this open by the end of this FY, the legal aspects of this process meant this could not occur. Bewdley School have partly refurbished the centre. We have submitted a joint bid for lottery funding and are awaiting a decision on this for further development of the centre.

In relation to the youth work within the centre, the WMF is now represented at the Wyre Forest District Schools and Police Panel and the Wyre Forest Suicide Prevention Schools Panel.
