**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

3.1 The objects of the CIO are for the benefit of the public, to: 3.1.1 advance education, in particular by enhancing the understanding of the history and horticultural legacy of James Backhouse with particular reference to the former nursery and gardens situated at West Bank Park; to promote engagement with this heritage; to research the history of the site and its horticultural legacy more generally;

3.1.2 preserve and conserve the remains of the Lodge at West Bank Park and the horticultural heritage of West Bank Park; 3.1.3 promote an understanding of horticulture by providing a sustainable

community space for people of all ages to come together, share knowledge and skills and engage with horticulture; and 3.1.4 to benefit the residents of York, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents in a common effort to provide facilities, in the interests of social welfare,for recreation and other leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the residents.

The work undertaken in this period has been to create and master a DVD of the 10 short films which will be used to share information about the Backhouse Legacy. They will also eventually be uploaded to a website for wider sharing.

In November 2019 three full days were spent at the British Library where all pages of the Backhouse scrapbook were finally digitized. This will enable us to work with the Backhouse relatives on further projects to do with the history.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

We have also been in touch with local schools to share our history with them. We have continued to share information with the schools and are working on

With the intention of sharing the heritage of the Backhouse Nurseries to a wider audience a number of visits have been planned where there are currently Backhouse rockeries. Aysgarth is one Rockery in the Dales which we have made good contact with. Another is at Burnby Hall where there has been a complete renovation of the backhouse rockery.

## Section D                      Achievements and erformance p

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The achievements of this year have been to work on the historical worth of a scrapbook which was otherwise in a basement in Auckland which would otherwise not have gained such an incredible highlight. Scores of pages and letters has been digitized and are now available for further study. We have great links with the British Library and the university. In addition we have worked with Burnby Hall on raising the profile and sharing our insights. Burnby Hall was awarded a lottery grant to completely renovate its Backhouse Rockery and we have forged a good link with them for their future exhibition about the Backhouse Rockery.

We also have an ongoing dialogue with Yorkshire Arboretum about our incredible and unique collection of trees planted in the backhouse nurseries. We have made a map of the trees and now have them identified. There are some champion specimens which would not have been identified if it was not for the work of the charity.
