2023 Annual Report of Trustees NO 1179749

The Trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31[st] December 2023.

Organisation

The overall management of the Association is the responsibility of the Charity Trustees.

CONSTITUTION and PUBLIC BENEFIT

The Association is governed by its constitution dated 5[th] April 2017 and is a registered charity. No. 1179749.

In shaping the objectives and planning the activities for the year, the Trustees have due regard to public benefit. The Trustees consider that the report set out in the following paragraphs indicate the benefit that the Charity provides to the public.

THE OBJECTS OF THE CHARITY AS SET OUT IN THE CONSTITUTION

with any local statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the Association and its constituent bodies in furtherance of the above objects.

Review of Operations

The Trustees at the start of January 2023 were

Chair - Cathy Gallagher,

Vice Chair - Jon Newsome Ray

Treasurer - Fergal Gallagher

Trustee - Rebecca Coyne resigned October 2023

Trustee – David Wilson resigned 1[st] June 2023

Operations

The Saltdean Community Association is no longer leasing the Lower Hall of the Saltdean Lido building. In discussions with Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (SLCIC) the Trustees have realised that there will no longer be a role for the Charity involving the Saltdean Lido Building.

The Charity will not be linked to a community building which will mean that the Objects of the Charity as outlined in the Constitution 2017 will need to be amended.

A review of the Constitution has commenced with guidance from a number of qualified advisors and the Charity Commission.

The Brighton and Hove City Council beach chalet on Saltdean undercliff was licenced to the SCA Trustees in November 2021 for 5 years i.e. until 2026 unless revoked or given up earlier.

2023 was a particularly busy year for the Beach Chalet as it was used for over 130 days use by residents of Saltdean as well as the Trustees using it for a variety of small meetings.

There is an annual fee commitment and regular maintenance needs to take place as the weather can been very damaging on the seafront.

Beneficiaries

The Trustees have encouraged as wide a range of community activities as possible across all ages and sectors of the community.

The Trustees continue to support other Charities and Not for Profit Groups including: Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company and Saltdean and Rottingdean Youth Club . As the Trustees have not been able to offer a Community Centre direct grants have been given to local groups.

Saltdean Swim and Surf a registered charity for young people ,to promote sea safety and lifesaving water-based activities received a donation of £1400 for a second year , to pay for 14 exclusive use sessions in Saltdean Lido

Saltdean Gardening Club. Received a £300 grant to encourage local people to meet and have speakers. Saltdean Jazz Club received £300.

A day at the Seaside initiative was concentrated on Saltdean families and was located at Saltdean Lido . A donation was made towards food and drink .

Other supporting activities

A major fundraising campaign was commenced to raise monies to create a mural at the seafront and to improve other facilities. As opening a bank account was not possible during the Covid 19 lockdown in 2020/2021. The SCA Trustees approved the use of the bank account as the projects fulfilled the objects of the Charity.

Other projects followed such as a foodbank, Neighbourhood Forum Plan and a Forestry Commission grant,

In 2023 the Trustees advised the principal fundraiser that the time had come to open a direct account for the funds. An accountant has been reviewing the use of Gift Aid to reassure the Trustees that procedures are correct.

Membership

Saltdean Resident’s Association (SRA) is an affiliated organisation and as such all members of the SRA are automatically affiliated members of the SCA with full voting rights. Membership is open to all adults over 18 years old.

Approval

This report was approved by the trustees on 23rd April 2024 and signed:
