## **TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT** 

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2021. 

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT** 

## **Governing Document** 

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, governed by a Constitution, and is registered with the Charity Commission under charity number 1179702. 

## **Organisational Structure** 

The trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits to fulfil this role. The charity trustees meet on a regular basis and are responsible for all decisions taken in relation to the overall control and strategic management of the charity. 

## **Recruitment, Appointment and Training of Trustees** 

The existing trustees are responsible for the appointment of new trustees. New trustees are brought into the organisation, when required, on the basis of eligibility, competence, specialist knowledge and skills. It is the policy of Barakat that, upon induction, each trustee is given a copy of the trust deed, the latest accounts, recent meeting minutes and guidance regarding the policies and procedures adopted by the charity. 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

The objectives of Barakat primarily focus on fulfilling the financial, spiritual and religious needs of the Muslim community together with serving the community at large. The communities currently served are Greater London & East London with Redbridge/Ilford/Barking in particular, but in future, will not be limited to London. 

The objectives of Barakat are summarised below: 

- To provide financial support to the needy people (Specially orphans and widows in Muslim community). 

- To support the wider community by promoting good morals & conduct and addressing areas of social concern, such as anti-social behaviour, criminality, substance abuse and family breakdown. 

- To address misinterpretation, misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the Islamic faith. 

- To assist present and future generations of Muslims to preserve and perfect Islam in their lives. 

- To assist in the provision of any charitable services within the limits of the law and particularly within the bounds of Islam. 

## **Public Benefit** 

In carrying out this review the trustees of Barakat have taken regard of and comply with the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and in particular its supplementary public guidance on the advancement of religion for the public benefit. 

## **Main activities during the year** 

During 2021, our activities included supporting needy community members and a mosque. The scale of activities was limited due to Covid impacts. 

Since the year end, the Charity has: 

- supported the local community in securing a dedicated swimming pool slot for men and youth in a local leisure centre in Redbridge

- started religious education classes for children and adults in Redbridge 

- purchased homeschooling (English and Mathematics) syllabus to support the parents with children’s education 

The trustees are in the process of setting/updating strategic direction of the charity for the future years including youth activities and supporting local homeless shelters with securing food from local supermarkets. 

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** 

For the year, the trustees have prepared Receipts and Payments accounts and a Statement of Assets and Liabilities, as permitted under section 133 of the Charities Act 2011. The charity’s source of income during the year was unrestricted donations of £16,500 and the reserves at year end were £38,935 (unrestricted). 

## **STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES** 

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) and the laws applicable to charities in England and Wales. The financial statements for each financial year must give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

- Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

- State whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; 

- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. 

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity Accounts and Reports Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence, taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
