Trustees Annual Report for the year ended on 31st October 2023

The trustees are pleased to present the annual report of Wisborough Green Sports CIO which was registered as charity number 1179541 on 14[th] August 2018.

The public address is The Pavilion, The Green, Wisborough Green, West Sussex, RH14 0BN

Aims and activities

The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of Wisborough Green (and surrounding areas), West Sussex by the provision of facilities for playing cricket, football, touch rugby, stoolball and any other sporting activities capable of promoting healthy recreation.

Achievements and performance

The charity enjoyed a very successful year in many respects. Financially, turnover increased by 4% to £113k. This included a 96% increase in bar sales to £91k. Membership subscriptions grew by 19% to £3,420 which reflected increased participation in sports throughout the associated clubs.

Fundraising events included the RunWisborough fun run, bbq’s, fete’s, quizzes, special sporting event promotions. These brought in a total income of £18k and after expenses of £6k these generated a £12k profit to be set aside for improving facilities and the new Pavilion fund. Fundraising was 66% lower than the previous year which benefitted from events to celebrate the platinum jubilee and a golf day in addition to RunWisborough.

Bar achieved a gross margin of 56% which was an improvement on the figure of 55% for 2022.

Administration expenses (excluding extraordinary items) increased by 24% to £61K driven primarily by a significant increase in staff costs due to increases in the minimum wage, employer’s NI and increased opening hours. Net profit of £6,669 was achieved which was 26% down on 2022. It is disappointing that the significant increase in bar turnover has not resulted in an increase in profit. This is due to the charity absorbing increased costs rather than passing these onto members and also the lack of large events.

The new drainage system meant a full season of football was achieved for the first time in about 5 years. Only a single game was cancelled due to wet weather. The system requires continual upkeep to ensure it continues to work effectively and a programme is in place to this end. On the whole we feel it has outperformed expectations. This has impacted bar income and also drawn in new members. The revived interested in football will mean WG can field an additional adults team next season.

Football, cricket and touch rugby continue to grow across demographics, however, stoolball suffered significantly during the pandemic and also lost one of the key drivers of the club who moved away. Despite the efforts of Sarah Rushin the club has not been able to find enough players to continue at this time.

The charity’s plans for a replacement sports Pavilion, which were submitted in October 2021, have still not been formally approved but informal confirmation from the case officer that they will be approved has been received. Formal approval has been delayed due to a water supply issue in the area which has all but halted all new development approvals. The charity has submitted a suitable water neutrality statement accepted by the case officer but this was rejected by Natural England due to the existing water consumption readings being too old (pre-pandemic ones were submitted as this seemed logical to most sane people). We will resubmit once the club is functioning at a pre-pandemic level.

Financial review

The financial position is shown the financial accounts but summarised as follows:

2023 2022
Income 113,364 109,121
Costs & Expenses 106,695 100,076
Surplus 6,669 9,045

Restricted funds total £68,964. This comprises a bequest from Pat Creighton Smith. The bequest was made to ensure that in the future the pavilion building was properly maintained, developed, or renewed . Net assets are £119,188 up 6% on 2022.

Reserves Policy

The trustees have decided the charity should carry a general reserve about equal to six months unrestricted fund expenditure, to minimise any risk of shortfalls and to cover any loss of income while the club house is being refurbished.

Restricted Funds are held in reserve for the Pavilion replacement.

£6,000 generated from events in the year will be allocated to a dedicated fund for the Pavilion replacement,

Future plans

Our key areas of focus over the next 3-5 years are:

There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required Offsetting or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.

In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.

Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading activities'.

For traded securities, the fair value is the value of the security quoted on the London Stock Exchange Daily Official List or equivalent. For other assets where there is no market price on a traded market, it is the trustees' or valuers' best estimate of fair value.
