Cornwall Food Action continues to supply surplus food from manufacturers and supermarkets to organisations supporting the vulnerable people in Cornwall.

The organisations we supply includes hostels for abused women and men, the homeless, recovering addicts; day centres for the elderly or people with learning disabilities, foodbanks, military veteran groups, and village halls in rural areas so that those living in isolated areas can get together for friendship and mutual support.

We provide food to around 40 organisations from Saltash to Penzance and as far north as Camelford.

Some of the worst poverty in Cornwall is in the rural areas. This is because of the following:

- a high percentage of homes are off the gas grid and are older and solid walled, hence heating costs can be much higher.

- there are challenges in terms of isolation due to limited public transport and difficult / poor access to essential services

- there are greater problems in terms of loneliness amongst older people, as demonstrated by the higher suicide rates.

In view of the above, we have endeavoured to provide food to providers in out of the way places, such as village halls, so that they are able to offer free or discounted meals for locals, however, there can be a significant distance between the food and the organisations utilising the material. To overcome this, Cornwall Food Action has previously supplied over 20 freezers to organisations around the county so that larger deliveries can be made, thus reducing the number of journeys that are needed to be made in order to distribute food.

Cornwall Food Action also has been able to use freezers at Cafe Chaos in Truro to store food over the short term before being distributed. We have also worked with organisations so that an increasing number now collect food from ourselves and coordinate with one another so that they take food to one another after collection from ourselves. In some cases we will also cover the travel expenses of recipient groups that collect food from pick up points.

We are a small group of people, all of whom are volunteers and our only overheads are expenses such as insurance, domain charges and mileage.

We intend to continue to operate in this low key but valuable manner to support Cornwall’s food system in re-directing surplus, as well as assisting front line organisations to connect with material and supporting logistical costs where required and practical.
