StreetSpace Knowle was awarded charitable status on 24[th] July 2018 under charity number 1179322. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) reporting to the Charity Commission.

The Trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year covering 1[st] January 2022 to 31st December 2022.
## **Objectives and Activities**
## **Objectives**
The object of the CIO is:
1. For the public benefit, to advance in life and help young people by:
- a) providing recreational and leisure time activities in the interest of social welfare, designed to improve their conditions of life;
- b) providing support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
These activities will take place primarily but not exclusively in Knowle West, Bristol.
StreetSpace Knowle is led by a Board of Trustees. The Board’s main responsibilities are to:
- Oversee the charity’s finances, ensuring we remain solvent and are not exposed to undue risk.
- Oversee the strategic direction of the organisation.
- Ensure the charity complies with the law and pursues its objects as set out in its governing document.
- Ensure adherence to relevant legislation (e.g. Health, Safety & Wellbeing, Safeguarding of young people, HR).
- To take overall responsibility for the charity’s performance.
Our board meets five times per year with additional meetings when matters arise which require attention.
## **Our Trustee’s Statement**
This financial statement covers the year from 1[st] January 2022 to 31st December 2022. StreetSpace was awarded charitable status in 2018 so has now operated in this capacity for just under 4 ½ years. Covid was a major factor for much of that time, and although restrictions have ended, we are still recovering from the impacts to some extent.
Finding suitable funding to maintain our operations is a constant challenge. Bristol City Council has announced its intention to build a Youth Zone in South Bristol, providing a hub for youth services. This will sit between our primary area of operation in Knowle West (Filwood), and the neighbouring area of Hartcliffe. Whilst it is great to see Bristol City Council investing in facilities for young people, we are aware this flagship project will require ongoing funding which may make it harder for us to attract funds and maintain our work. We believe StreetSpace offers a unique provision to the most marginalised young people in the area, who are often excluded from more structured provisions.
We are also aware of the challenges in finding skilled youth workers to work in such a challenging field. We continue to look for opportunities to develop the professional skills of enthusiastic young people with the aptitude to build strong relationships with our young people and to excel in this area

Despite these challenges we are incredibly proud of the impact our team are having in supporting the community in Knowle West. They are extremely well respected for the skill and passion they bring, by community leaders, local government officers, the emergency services and other organisations operating locally.
In a period where societal challenges are all too prevalent, the value of a font line youth work organisation, operating on one of the most deprived areas in the county and engaging with some of the most challenging young people, cannot be overstated.
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our donors and partners who make it possible for us to deliver our services. We are particularly indebted to the Nisbet Trust and Bristol City Council for their support and guidance over the year.

## **Our Project Manager Samantha Burrett’s Statement**
StreetSpace Knowle is a small CIO committed to empowering disadvantaged young people in Knowle West, one of the 10% most deprived areas in the UK. We aim to help these young people become active, engaged citizens, building their skills, capacities, and confidence to drive positive change. StreetSpace Knowle actively involves young people in shaping our programs, giving them responsibility for projects, and supporting their ideas, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment.
StreetSpace Knowle was created to address the clear needs of Knowle West’s young people, many of whom face poverty and social exclusion. Our work addresses the challenges they encounter daily, from limited access to safe recreational spaces to exposure to negative influences such as gangs and drugs. With an in-depth understanding of these challenges, we provide critical support through various youth-focused initiatives.
Our work is made possible by the support of Bristol City Council, HAF (Department for Education), and Quartet. With this funding, we’ve grown in staffing and services to meet the demand for youth support in Knowle West and beyond. Recently, we’ve expanded our reach with a new play contract in South Bristol, working in collaboration with other agencies.
## StreetSpace Knowle’s programs include:
1. **Youth Hub Sessions** : A center co-created with local young people, providing a safe space for connection and growth.
2. **Detached Youth Work** : On-the-street support that reaches young people directly in their communities.
3. **Self-Expression Programs** : Opportunities for values-based self-expression through art, music, and sports.
4. **Multi-Agency Pilot Scheme** : A detached street-based program in South Bristol, supported by Bristol City Council.
5. **Outdoor Play Sessions for 8-14-Year-Olds** : Creating safe, engaging spaces for play and socialization.
Our objectives include:
- Providing safe, enjoyable spaces for relaxation and growth.
- Building confidence, self-worth, and resilience.
- Increasing employability by fostering skills and aspirations.
- Empowering young people to co-design community services.
- Strengthening social networks and enhancing communication skills.
Through these initiatives, we aim to foster greater social inclusion, enabling young people to aspire to brighter futures and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their world.

## **Statement of Financial Activity**
In 2023 we have seen a greater share of our funding come from grant funding, primarily in the form of local authority funding for provision of youth services. This represents funding for youthwork sessions, detached youth work and youth play services.
We have seen some diversification of our income in the form of much needed donations. Notably, we received over £1,700 from the Coop Local community Fund which enabled us to purchase IT equipment which had been previously unattainable. Although as a small organisation we are able to channel most of the funding we receive directly to the service of young people we have some unavoidable administrative expenses which can be difficult to cover through grant funding.
Although we have seen a rise the total level of income in 2023, and a greater surplus to that seen in 2022, some of the funding in 2023 is for the purpose of providing services across 2023 and 2024. It is fantastic to receive funding over a longer period which allows us to plan more effectively.
We are extremely grateful to the organisations which continue to support our work in Filwood. Bristol City Council continue to work with us to provide the services which we know are so clearly needed. We are acutely aware of the challenges facing the young people we work with. Bristol is a city of significant inequality and Filwood is an area with significant levels of deprivation which impacts directly on the lives of its young people

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern

## **Policies**
1. Income and expenditure are recognised at the point at which they occur
2. Support costs have been allocated 100% towards the charitable activities of the charity
## **Restricted Funding**
3. Historically all our funding was attracted through applications to support specific programmes of youth work and treated as restricted funds for those purposes. As we mature as an organisation we will adopt a more sophisticated approach to accounting for our costs and distinguish between restricted and unrestricted funds
## **Related Party Transactions**
4. Trustee benefits have occurred in the year through services provided by connected parties. These have been managed in accordance with our conflicts of interest policy and amounted to:
- a. £980.00 to Sussanna di Palma (Secretary and Trustee) paid to Café Marina (personal business) for packed lunches provided to StreetSpace Knowle as part of the lunches delivered during school holiday activity provision
