## **PINEWOOD TRUST TRUSTEES REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31[ST] MARCH 2023**

The Pinewood Trust is an incorporated charitable organisation established in 2018 as a legacy to the collaborative network of organisations that had developed in the city of Hull and East Riding. We have continued to develop the foundations of the charity and ensured that we had appropriate governance, infrastructure, and strategic planning to take steps towards the delivery of the aims and objectives of our charity. This direction has enabled us to build partnerships with schools, youth and community groups, and corporate organisations.

During this year we have developed many programmes working with children, young people, and families, in addition to school, scout, youth groups, and those with special educational needs, and neurodiversity. It has been a year of learning for us, with the development of our 3-storey outdoor adventure playground and facilities provided by BBC Children in Need DIY SOS Big Build, in collaboration with St. Michael’s Youth Project in Hull. Which has enabled us to provide greater opportunity to invite more people to use the site of all ages and abilities and helped those who are anxious being in the outdoors to have a steppingstone to outdoor activities with access to quality facilities. Our site and services (including training) have been provided for a nominal charge, which makes being able to access these activities more viable to these small groups, who would normally never consider them.

We have welcomed over 1000 people to our site this year, with many repeat visitors. Pinewood has become a place of sanctuary for young people who have struggled with social engagement and isolation, they have developed friendships and through our partners we have learnt that they are accessing more mainstream provision and developing independence. Other groups have shared that it has been a wonderful experience for their children and young people, to be able to access the outdoors in a safe environment, whilst learning positive risk, along with participating in activities where they can have fun and play, which is an activity that is greater underestimated and has such a substantial impact on child development, building resilience, and positive health and wellbeing for all. For most, even if just visiting for a few hours, it has given respite.

Our aim for the future is to build on the relationships we have developed with health and well-being support organisations, to promote activities that assist in these outcomes for people through Social and Green Prescribing, and supporting more young people who struggle within a mainstream school environment. We have evidence, and have observed

first-hand, the impact that being in the outdoors and using our site has on people’s lives, and how this could help to reduce the need for other services intervention in the future and support people in a happy, independent life.

We are still seeing the impact of Covid on the people who visit Pinewood, along with the additional pressures of the Cost-of-Living Crisis. Many have shared that they struggle to make ends meet, and it is a choice of heat or eat. For us as an organisation, we have had to think more creatively to ensure we are able to cover our costs, which subsidises our site rates and usage, so that we do not have to pass these increases on to our users, who already have to prioritise other expenditure over outdoor activities. We rely heavily on our amazing team of volunteers, but also recognise that they also need to pay their bills and cover costs of travel and fuel. As a board we are always forward planning to ensure the future sustainability of our organisation.

## **Objectives and activities**

The Pinewood Trust Trustees review the aims, objectives and activities of the charity each year and ensure that they remain focused on its stated purposes. The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities.

## **Purposes and aims**

The Pinewood Trust is a proactive charity with land (primary activity delivery site) based in Burshill, Brandesburton, near Beverley. We provide a safe environment and activities to encourage young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds; to get out of the city and enjoy the countryside, a peaceful place where older people can come together for days out; combating isolation and loneliness and a calming, green sanctuary offering respite to those affected with mental illness. We aim to provide the opportunity for all people to access the outdoors in a way that is right for them.

## **Financial review**

The charity receives income from grants and donations. During 2022 - 2023 the income amounted to £30,109.36 – made up of £23,080.00 from grants and donations and £7029.36 from charitable activities. Direct charitable expenditure and other indirect expenditure amounted to £29,902.21. We report a net surplus resource of £207.15 for the year. Our aim is for further income generation for the viability and sustainability of our organisation and support of our aims and purpose.
