MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025 ## **Mid Wales Music Trust** ## **Legal and Administrative Information** ## **Constitution** The Mid Wales Music Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no. 1179225), registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018. The charity replaced the previous Mid Wales Music Trust (no. 1130828) which has been dissolved. The original charity had been in existence since 2009 and was governed by a trust deed. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025 ## **Mid Wales Music Trust** ## **Report of the Trustees for the year 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025** The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report and financial statements for the period. These have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and comply with the Charity’s governing document. ## **Structure and Governance** The Mid Wales Music Trust is a registered charity, number 1179225. It is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018. This charity replaces the original charity of the same name which was constituted under a trust deed dated 1 June 2009. ## **Trustees** Trustees are appointed with regard to the skills, knowledge and experience required for the effective administration of the CIO. Apart from the first Trustees, all Trustees are appointed for a term of four years which may be renewed for a second term of four years. Any extension of a Trustee’s term beyond eight years must be agreed by a Special Resolution agreed by a majority of the Trustees and noted with an explanation for that extension in the Annual Report. ## **Aim and Purposes** The charitable object of the Mid Wales Music Trust, as described in the constitution is: To advance the education, appreciation, and knowledge of the public in the art of classical music, through the promotion of classical music and live performance in general for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. At the meeting of the Trustees on 24 August 2021, it was agreed that from September 2021 the Mid Wales Music Trust would deliver its charitable object by focusing its work around raising funds, principally through donations from individuals, to support charities and partner organisations to deliver high quality performances and music education projects for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. 4. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025 ## **Activities** During the period covered by this Report the Trustees carried out their charitable aim and objectives by providing financial support to local charities in Powys to deliver music education activities and performances as follows: ## Glasbury Arts Harps in Schools 2024/25 academic year Towards tuition costs for students at Gwernyfed High School to learn the harp. ## Hay Music Trust Towards the costs of presenting the 2025 season of concerts which included a richly varied repertoire ranging from Mozart to Judith Weir, performed by string quartets, pianists, vocalists and wind players. As well as the concerts which take place at Hay Castle, St Mary’s Church and The Globe, Hay Music Trust arrange for many of the musicians to present workshops and informal performances at the local schools. ## Brecon Beacons Music Trust Brecon Baroque Festival, October 2024 Artistic Director Rachel Podger devised a musical tour of Baroque Europe. The opening performance explored French choral music and its influence across its borders with soloists including soprano Joanne Lunn and alto Robin Blaze. On Saturday evening Rachel and Brecon Baroque explored the world of Rameau, Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Marais and Telemann, while the Festival’s Sunday evening tradition of revealing unusual instrumentation and fresh musical colour continued, with Mélisande Corriveau (pardessus de viole) and Eric Milnes (harpsichord) revealing the works of Boismortier, Dollé, JS Bach, Barrière, de Caix d’Hervelois. The pardessus de viole is a French instrument from the viol family, invented at the end of the 17[th] century to compete with a newcomer in chamber music, the violin. ## Sinfonia Cymru Storytelling and music project February/March 2025: Ty Unnos Funding provided for Sinfonia Cymru, towards their schools programme for primary and SEND schools in Powys. Led by Sinfonia Cymru musician Joy Becker, bilingual narrator Tamar Williams, and stage designers Graham and Hilary Roberts, children from across the county took part in music-making and stage design workshops and attended interactive performances held at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells and The Hafren in Newtown. The production was then taken to Llangollen International Eisteddfod. ## Crickhowell Choral Society: Scholars Concert & Crickhowell Festival MWMT’s funding was directed towards young artists performing both at the Scholars Concert in March and at the annual May Festival. ## Brecon Buzz CIC for Brecon Choir Festival, July 2025 Towards singing and choral workshops for amateur singers and children, including a workshop led by Gigi Galletta, gospel choir workshop led by Beth Allwood, and Come and Sing workshop for Mendelssohn’s _Elijah_ . ## Presteigne Festival, August 2025 Towards the artistic programme which featured a special tribute to Dmitri Shostakovich marking the 50[th] anniversary of his death, plus a celebration of the 80[th] birthday of British composer Edward Gregson. The composer-in-residence was Jamaican born British composer Eleanor Alberga and fourteen diverse works were commissioned for the Festival. 5. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2025 ## Hay Music Trust Towards the 10[th] Hay Music Festival, September 2025. The theme of the Festival was Emigres and Exiles, and it centred around the Fitzwilliam String Quartet who were joined by pianist Sarah Nicolls, composer Charlotte Bray, visual artist Caroline Burraway, Sinfonia Cymru and others. ## Llansantffraed Church: ‘A Sunshine After Rain’ Taken from one of Henry Vaughan’s poems, this performance explored the landscape of Wales and the Usk Valley with readings and music. Poems and other readings were selected and read by Dr Rowan Williams and Hilary Davies, while the music was performed by locally based harpist Martha Powell and included two pieces that she had composed. ## Mid Wales Opera Towards a primary school project in North Powys, scheduled to take place in February 2026. ## **Financial Review** Total receipts for this period were £19,430, made up of donations of £16,926 and Gift Aid of £2,504. At the year end additional Gift Aid of £2,655 was due on donations made during the year (received in September 2025). The Trustees awarded grants totalling £18,900 to the organisations listed above. Expenditure for the year, including grants plus administration, communications and professional fees came to a total of £19,952. £27,415 was brought forward on the 1 September 2024, and £26,893 was carried forward on the 31 August 2025. ## **Receipts and Payments accounts** These accounts have been prepared under the receipts and payments method. Receipts and payments accounts contain a summary of money received and spent during the period and a list of assets and liabilities at the end of the period. ## **Reserves Policy** The Trustees’ policy is to hold surplus unrestricted funds as reserves that could be available to provide support for future projects. 6.
