## **Legal and Administrative Information** 

## **Constitution** 

The Mid Wales Music Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no. 1179225), registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018.  The charity replaced the previous Mid Wales Music Trust (no. 1130828) which has been dissolved.  The original charity had been in existence since 2009 and was governed by a trust deed.  The change in governance was made because the legal and governance framework of a charitable incorporated organisation were more appropriate for the charity’s activities.

## **Report of the Trustees for the year 1 September 2023 – 31 August 2024** 

The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report and financial statements for the period. These have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and comply with the Charity’s governing document. 

## **Structure and Governance** 

The Mid Wales Music Trust is a registered charity, number 1179225. It is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018.   This charity replaces the original charity of the same name which was constituted under a trust deed dated 1 June 2009. 

## **Trustees** 

Trustees are appointed with regard to the skills, knowledge and experience required for the effective administration of the CIO. Apart from the first Trustees, all Trustees are appointed for a term of four years which may be renewed for a second term of four years. Any extension of a Trustee’s term beyond eight years must be agreed by a Special Resolution agreed by a majority of the Trustees and noted with an explanation for that extension in the Annual Report. 

## **Aim and Purposes** 

The charitable object of the Mid Wales Music Trust, as described in the constitution is: 

To advance the education, appreciation, and knowledge of the public in the art of classical music, through the promotion of classical music and live performance in general for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. 

At the meeting of the Trustees on 24 August 2021, it was agreed that from September 2021 the Mid Wales Music Trust would deliver its charitable object by focusing its work around raising funds, principally through donations from individuals, to support charities and partner organisations to deliver high quality performances and music education projects for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales.

## **Activities** 

During the period covered by this Report the Trustees carried out their charitable aim and objectives by providing financial support to local charities in Powys to deliver music education activities and performances as follows: 

## Glasbury Arts 

Harps in Schools 2023/24 academic year 

Towards tuition costs for students at Gwernyfed High School to learn the harp. 

## South Powys Youth Music 2023/24 

Support for SPYM’s year-round programme including weekly rehearsals, schools workshops and subsidised instrumental tuition for beginners. 

## Hay Music Trust 

Towards the costs of presenting the 2024 season of concerts which included The Ligeti Quartet, Ensemble Bash, pianist Clare Hammond, Sinfonia Cymru, Hereford Chamber Choir and many more. As well as the concerts which take place at Hay Castle, St Mary’s Church and The Globe, Hay Music Trust arrange for many of the musicians to present workshops and informal performances at the local schools. 

## Brecon Beacons Music Trust 

Brecon Baroque Festival, October 2023 

Artistic Director Rachel Podger and the Brecon Baroque Ensemble gave the first live performance of the Goldbergs Reimagined, arranged by Chad Kelly. Additional performances included Bach’s Audition Cantatas with soloists Freddie Long, Gwilym Bowen and Joanne Lunn, a lunchtime concert by members of Brecon Baroque at the Plough Chapel, and an organ recital at Brecon Cathedral by James Johnstone. Students and young musicians joined the professionals to form the Brecon Baroque Festival Orchestra for the traditional finale concert. 

## Sinfonia Cymru 

Storytelling and music project February/March 2024: 

Funding provided for Sinfonia Cymru, towards their schools programme for primary and SEND schools in Powys. Led by Sinfonia Cymru musician Joy Becker, bilingual narrator Tamar Williams, and stage designers Graham and Hilary Roberts, children from across the county took part in music-making and stage design workshops and attended interactive performances held at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells and The Hafren in Newtown. 

## Crickhowell Choral Society: Crickhowell Festival, May 2024 

MWMT’s funding was directed towards young artists performing at the annual Festival, together with the performance of a one act opera, _The Egg_ , written and performed by students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. 

## Brecon Buzz CIC for Brecon Choir Festival, July 2024 

Towards _The Armed Man_ workshop for amateur singers, children’s singing workshops, and Men’s Shed Shanti workshops. 

## Presteigne Festival, August 2024 

Towards the artistic programme which featured Benjamin Britten and included a diverse selection of works inspired by the natural world. The Festival also celebrated the 90[th] anniversary of Welsh composer William Mathias. Richard Blackford was composer-inresidence and there were 15 world premiered, of which 11 were specially commissioned.

## Hay Music Trust 

Hay Chamber Music Festival, September 2024 

Five concerts, two film screenings, a discussion and workshop, a guided walk and four outreach events to local schoolchildren and to vulnerable children and adults. Artists included the Fitzwilliam Quartet, Huw Watkins, Sarah Nicholl and Robin Michael. Lectures, talks and conversations featured Stephen Johnson, Peter Florence and Alan George. Community engagement included performances and workshops at local primary and secondary schools, the Hay Day Café for people living with dementia, and the Family Place, which supports adopted and fostered children and their families. 

## Llansantffraed Church/Brecknock Society and Museum Friends 

Siegfried Sassoon: “Above the Voiceful River”, September 2024, a concert celebrating the poet’s visit to Llansantffraed Church, near Brecon, and incorporating readings plus music performed by harpist Martha Powell. 

## **Financial Review** 

Total receipts for this period were £24,896, made up of donations of £22,850 and Gift Aid of £2,046.  At the year end additional Gift Aid of £2,475 was due on donations made during the year (received: £2,504 including interest on 24 December 2024). 

The Trustees awarded grants totalling £18,050 to the organisations listed above. Expenditure for the year, including grants plus administration, communications and professional fees came to a total of £19,273. 

£21,792 was brought forward on the 1 September 2023, and £27,415 was carried forward on the 31 August 2024. 

## **Receipts and Payments accounts** 

These accounts have been prepared under the receipts and payments method. Receipts and payments accounts contain a summary of money received and spent during the period and a list of assets and liabilities at the end of the period. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

The Trustees’ policy is to hold surplus unrestricted funds as reserves that could be available to provide support for future projects.

## **Note: Administration costs** 

Catrin Slater is employed on a freelance basis to manage the administration of the Charity. She is paid for the number of hours she works, and during this period she worked 44 hours (25 hours in 2023).
