## **Legal and Administrative Information** 

## **Constitution** 

The Mid Wales Music Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no. 1179225), registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018.  The charity replaced the previous Mid Wales Music Trust (no. 1130828) which has been dissolved.  The original charity had been in existence since 2009 and was governed by a trust deed.  The change in governance was made because the legal and governance framework of a charitable incorporated organisation were more appropriate for the charity’s activities.

## **Report of the Trustees for the year 1 September 2022 – 31 August 2023** 

The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report and financial statements for the period. These have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and comply with the Charity’s governing document. 

## **Structure and Governance** 

The Mid Wales Music Trust is a registered charity, number 1179225. It is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018.   This charity replaces the original charity of the same name which was constituted under a trust deed dated 1 June 2009. 

## **Trustees** 

Trustees are appointed with regard to the skills, knowledge and experience required for the effective administration of the CIO. Apart from the first Trustees, all Trustees are appointed for a term of four years which may be renewed for a second term of four years. Any extension of a Trustee’s term beyond eight years must be agreed by a Special Resolution agreed by a majority of the Trustees and noted with an explanation for that extension in the Annual Report. 

## **Aim and Purposes** 

The charitable object of the Mid Wales Music Trust, as described in the constitution is: 

To advance the education, appreciation, and knowledge of the public in the art of classical music, through the promotion of classical music and live performance in general for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. 

At the meeting of the Trustees on 24 August 2021, it was agreed that from September 2021 the Mid Wales Music Trust would deliver its charitable object by focusing its work around raising funds, principally through donations from individuals, to support charities and partner organisations to deliver high quality performances and music education projects for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales.

## **Activities** 

During the period covered by this Report the Trustees carried out their charitable aim and objectives by providing financial support to local charities in Powys to deliver music education activities and performances as follows: 

## Brecon Beacons Music Trust 

## Brecon Baroque Festival, October 2022 

This was the second year of the Walk with Bach theme.  Artistic Director Rachel Podger and the Brecon Baroque Ensemble were joined by artists including Robert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini, soprano Rowan Pierce, organist Josef Laming and the English Concert and Sackbut Ensemble. The Festival culminated in a performance by the Brecon Baroque Festival Orchestra, directed by Rachel Podger and bringing together the professional musicians of the Brecon Baroque Ensemble with students and local amateurs. 

## Black Mountains Music Trust 

The Fitzwilliam at Hay Chamber Music Festival, September 2023 

The theme, ‘A Fuse of Fantasy and Folklore’, included performances by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, pianist Simon Callaghan and folk group Bows and Bellows, plus daily workshops/lectures on the featured repertoire by Richard Wigmore.  Community engagement included performances and workshops at local primary and secondary schools, the Hay Day Café for people living with dementia, and the Family Place, which supports adopted and fostered children and their families. 

## Glasbury Arts 

Harps in Schools 2023/24 

Towards tuition costs for students at Gwernyfed High School to learn the harp. 

## Hay Music Trust 

Towards the costs of presenting the 2022/2023 season of concerts including pianist Jayson Gilham, the Solem Quartet, Riot Ensemble, Ruth Wall and Graham Fitkin, Theorbo Ensemble Today, and artists of the National Opera Studio. 

## Llansantffraed Church/Brecknock Society and Museum Friends 

David Jones ‘Starlight Order concert, Llansantffraed Church, 16 July 2023 This concert formed part of the programme of events organised alongside the major exhibition of the work of artist David Jones (1895 – 1974) held at Y Gaer Museum & Art Gallery, Brecon, from July to October 2023. The performance included readings from Jones’s _In Parenthesis_ and _The Sleeping Lord_ interwoven with performances by local musician Martha Powell of classic Welsh pieces on the concert harp. 

## Shakespeare Link 

July 2023: _A Midsummer Night’s Dream_ theatre, music and prop-making project. 60 pupils from Dolau and Llanelwedd Primary Schools spent a week at the Willow Globe near Llandrindod Wells, exploring Shakespeare’s comedy through creative workshops culminating in a promenade performance for an audience of fellow pupils and family around the idyllic Willow Globe site. 

## Sinfonia Cymru 

Storytelling and music project February/March 2023: 

Funding provided for Sinfonia Cymru, long-term project partners of MWMT, to sustain and develop the schools programme for primary and SEND schools in Powys. Led by Sinfonia Cymru musician Joy Becker, bilingual narrator Tamar Williams, and stage designers Graham and Hilary Roberts, 292 children took part in music-making and stage design 5. workshops, while a further 1,089 attended the interactive performances held at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells and The Hafren in Newtown. 

## South Powys Youth Music 2022/23 

Support for SPYM’s programme including weekly rehearsals, schools workshops and subsidised tuition for beginners, plus the first Summer Holiday Open Day in August 2023. 

## **Financial Review** 

Total receipts for this period were £22,685 made up of donations of £19,390, and a further £3,295 received in Gift Aid. An additional £2,000 was due from Gift Aid at the year end (received on 17 October 2023). 

The Trustees awarded grants totalling £19,530 to the organisations listed above.  Overall payments for the year, including grants plus administration, communications and professional fees came to a total of £20,333. 

£20,989 was brought forward on the 1 September 2022, and £21,792 was carried forward on the 31 August 2023. 

## **Receipts and Payments accounts** 

These accounts have been prepared under the receipts and payments method. Receipts and payments accounts contain a summary of money received and spent during the period and a list of assets and liabilities at the end of the period. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

The Trustees’ policy is to hold surplus unrestricted funds as reserves that could be available to provide support for future projects.

## **Note: Administration costs** 

Catrin Slater is employed on a freelance basis to manage the administration of the Charity. She is paid for the number of hours she works, and during this period she worked 25 hours (34 hours in 2022).
