MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022 ## **Mid Wales Music Trust** ## **Legal and Administrative Information** ## **Constitution** The Mid Wales Music Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no. 1179225), registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018. The charity replaced the ‘old’ Mid Wales Music Trust (no. 1130828) which has been dissolved. The original charity had been in existence since 2009 and was governed by a trust deed. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022 ## **Mid Wales Music Trust** ## **Report of the Trustees for the year 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022** The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their annual report and financial statements for the period. These have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and comply with the Charity’s governing document. ## **Structure and Governance** The Mid Wales Music Trust is a registered charity, number 1179225. It is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and was registered with the Charity Commission on 17 July 2018. This charity replaces the original charity of the same name which was constituted under a trust deed dated 1 June 2009. ## **Trustees** Trustees are appointed with regard to the skills, knowledge and experience required for the effective administration of the CIO. Apart from the first Trustees, all Trustees are appointed for a term of four years which may be renewed for a second term of four years. Any extension of a Trustee’s term beyond eight years must be agreed by a Special Resolution agreed by a majority of the Trustees and noted with an explanation for that extension in the Annual Report. ## **Aim and Purposes** The charitable object of the Mid Wales Music Trust, as described in the constitution is: To advance the education, appreciation, and knowledge of the public in the art of classical music, through the promotion of classical music and live performance in general for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. Following the meeting of the Trustees on 24 August 2021, it was agreed that from September 2021 the Mid Wales Music Trust would deliver its charitable object by focusing its work around raising funds, principally through donations from individuals, to support charities and partner organisations to deliver high quality performances and music education projects for the public benefit in and for Mid Wales. 4. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022 ## **Activities** During the period covered by this Report the Trustees carried out their charitable aim and objectives by providing financial support to local charities in Powys to deliver music education activities and performances as follows: ## Brecon Beacons Music Trust ## Brecon Baroque Festival, October 2021 This was the first year of the Walk with Bach theme focused around works from Bach’s earlier years and those of his contemporaries including Schutz and Buxtehude. Artistic Director Rachel Podger and the Brecon Baroque Ensemble were joined by Julian Podger and Trinity Baroque, musicians from Fretwork, Clare Salaman and The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments, plus early career and young musicians in the Festival Orchestra. Community workshops were also delivered for adults with disabilities. ## Black Mountains Music Trust The Fitzwilliam at Hay Chamber Music Festival, September 2022 Artists included the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, the Hill Quartet, and the Greenwich Trio, plus daily workshops/lectures on the featured repertoire by Richard Wigmore. Outreach included performances and workshops at local primary and secondary schools, the Hay Day Café for people living with dementia, and the Family Place, which supports adopted and fostered children and their families. ## Glasbury Arts Harp Summer School, August 2022 MWMT’s grant subsidised places on the Summer School for 10 students learning the harp through Glasbury Arts’ Harps in Schools project at Gwernyfed High School ## Hay Music Trust Towards core costs of the 2021/2022 season of concerts featuring artists including Huw Watkins, Tom Poster, Ruth Wall with Graham Fitkin, the Mavron Quartet and Sirinu among others, and programmes ranging from medieval to contemporary. In addition to the concerts, four workshops were delivered at Hay Primary School. ## Shakespeare Link July 2022: _Romeo Juliet_ theatre, music and prop-making project. 60 pupils from Newbridge on Wye Primary School spent a week at the Willow Globe near Llandrindod Wells, exploring _Romeo and Juliet_ through creative workshops and making their own show which they then performed to an audience of family and fellow pupils in a promenade performance around the Willow Globe site. ## Sinfonia Cymru Spring 2022: Funding provided for Sinfonia Cymru, long-term project partners of MWMT, to sustain and develop the schools programme originally established by MWMT for primary and SEND schools in Powys. The project was inspired by the emigration of the Welsh to Patagonia in the 19th-century. The music was led by trombonist and educator Raph Clarkson with Sinfonia Cymru trumpeter Gideon Brooks. The project included story-telling, music-making and set-design workshops at five schools, and culminated in a performance at each school with music from the folk and classical traditions of Wales and South America. 5. MWMT Annual Report 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022 ## **Financial Review** Total receipts during this financial period were £14,780, all raised in donations from individuals, with an additional £2,825 due from Gift Aid. The Trustees awarded grants totalling £14,300 to the organisations listed above. Overall payments for the year, including grants plus administration, communications and professional fees came to a total of £15,645. £20,730 was brought forward on the 1 September 2021, and £20,990 was carried forward on the 31 August 2022. ## **Receipts and Payments accounts** These accounts have been prepared under the receipts and payments method. Receipts and payments accounts contain a summary of money received and spent during the period and a list of assets and liabilities at the end of the period. ## **Reserves Policy** The Trustees’ policy is to hold surplus unrestricted funds as reserves that could be available to provide support for future projects. 6.
