Annual Report of the Trustees of the New London Music Association 30[th] September 2024 Charity Reg. 1179200

Background

The New London Music Association (NLMA) was registered as a Charity in July 2018. It is a continuation of the New London Music Society (NLMS) which was formed in 1981 by the conductor Terence Lovett. The change of name was required to alter governance arrangements in becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and amending the Constitution.

Activities and Objectives

The object of NLMA, as stated in the constitution, is:

“To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects, by such ways as The CIO shall from time to time determine, including the organisation of music schools.”

Trustees and Structure

  1. There were six Trustees of the Association in place in 2023-24: Philip Meaden (Foundation Trustee), Suzanne Meaden (Foundation Trustee, Treasurer), Lorraine Collins (Foundation Trustee), Tessa Crilly (appointed 17[th] June 2020; Chair from 5[th] October 2023), Euan McCandless (appointed 1[st] September 2020), Stephanie Burras (appointed 5[th] October 2023).

  2. NLMA was formed as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2018. Assets were fully transferred from NLMS to NLMA by 30[th] September 2023. (Asset transfer took place over two financial years 2021 - 2023, delayed by the Covid pandemic).

  3. NLMS (Registered No 283630) has been wound up as a registered charity. It has a historic identity and brand and continues to be a trading name for NLMA activities

  4. The Society’s correspondent is Dr Teresa Crilly, Chair of NLMA.

Finance

  1. In the year ending 30th September 2024 NLMA’s operational income of £110,168 exceeded expenditure of £104,980, giving an operational surplus of £5,188.

  2. Reserves for NLMA stood at £112,777 as at 30[th] September 2024.

Courses

In 2023 – 2024 NLMA offered two major events: (i) a string chamber music weekend; and (ii) a second offering in the longstanding and successful series of residential music summer schools.

1

(i) Chamber Music Weekend – Easter School The chamber music weekend consisted of pre-formed string quartets, coached by an established professional quartet, and took place in April 2024 at Hinsley Hall in Leeds.

(ii) Music Summer School

The Summer School took place in August 2024 at Uppingham School in Rutland. The offer consisted of four courses: two orchestras, (the Symphony Orchestra for those of Grade 8 standard, and the Sinfonietta for those of Grades 5-7), the String Ensemble (for earlier stage players) and the Choir – “Choral Singing for Pleasure”. The course features specialist tutors who coach sectional rehearsals focused on concert repertoire for both orchestras and the choir.

The charity’s motto is ‘Friendship in Music’, representing the ethos of the summer school.

Approved by the Trustees, and signed on their behalf by:

Teresa Crilly, Chair of the New London Music Association 14[th] July 2025
